“Bahari Beach, the perfect spot”
Reviewed December 22, 2005

Hi,
I am travel agent in Brussels Belgium and I visited Costa Rica for the 2nd time in 3 years. We stopped in Matapalo on our way to Dominical and I have to say IT IS FANTASTIC! Bahari Beach is the perfect place to stop. Small and friendly hotel with 2 perfectly furnished rooms in the main building and 4 "Safari tents" facing to the sea. You stop there for 2 nights but at the end you stay 7 nights! The place is owned by a Hungarian couple who are masters in hospitality. Fresh flowers in your rooms each day, great food and the friendliest staff of the whole coast.
Prices: 60-70 USD for the rooms in the main house
80-90 USD for a Safari tent
Swimming pool and jacuzzi in the garden...the perfect spot to read a book, watch the waves or just chill out.
If there is a paradise on earth, Bahari Beach is surely close to it.
Don't hesitate to send me an email if you have questions about Costa Rica: frencyxav@skynet.be
Take care, Pura Vida!
Xavier

If you are looking for a place that is "off the beaten path" this is it! The road to Bahari Beach Bungalows is of some discussion as it is yet unpaved. While the town of Playa Matapalo is small the beach is amazing. Miles of palm fringed beach with a hard packed sand make for great beach walks.
The bungalows consist of four African Safari platform tents set up around a small pool area. The pool area faces the ocean and is surrounded with palms and flora. There are plenty of chairs, lounges and a shaded table poolside. There are at least two outdoor showers next to the pool to wash off the sand.

The tents are very comfortable and set up on platforms. This is not camping. The beds were very comfortable and there was a dresser, side tables, reading lamps and a place to hang your clothes. There was a fan and plenty of windows for ventilation. Each unit has a small porch with two outdoor rockers and a spout for washing off sand. A drying rack is available to hang beach stuff on. The floors are tiled as are the en-suite bathrooms. The bathrooms have a large sink area and a walk in shower. They were nicer than the bathrooms in the San Jose Marriott where rooms go for $300 per night; we stayed there too.
They also have two rooms available across the road (more like a driveway than a road) where the dining area is. They have a night guard that patrols for added security. The low season price is about $65 and high about $90. They have a website with the current details.

The hosts are very warm and welcoming. We wandered over for breakfast every morning and had a wonderful plate of fresh fruit, coffee, juice and toast for about $5. If you want a little bigger meal, you get the basic breakfast of fruit and etc. with gallo pinto and eggs or eggs and breakfast meat for about $8. For dinner they had a limited choice but it was all tasty. They come and tell you what the choices are for the evening(which I think is charming and more like I am in someones home for dinner).
The menu is set for one price ($17) and they offered an appetizer, salad or soup and then the main course followed with dessert. We had our choice of fresh fish, chicken, grilled shrimp or fiet mignon all served with rice. Alcohol is extra. The meals were very good. I had filet mignon each night but I tasted the fish and it was good too. The menu changes a bit day to day and was all very good food. If you are a picky eater you might bring some snacks. But I am sure they would try to put something together for you. They played some nice classical music at dinner and created a nice atmosphere.
We were lucky enough to meet some great Canadians while there and shared every meal with them at the same table.
There is a small store where you can get some sodas, beer or snacks about 5-10 min walk down the road.
Thank you Bahari Beach for making our trip special.
