“Bed sit accomodation within palatial surroundings”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2010

To co-incide with a trip to Les Miserables, booked a room to make a night of it especially as my wife and I get out less than convicts (2 young children at home....). Wasn't looking for the The Ritz, but got Tenko instead.

On arrival, greeted with very impressive grounds and building, suggesting a pleasant stay. At reception, told that we would be in the lodge accommodation, detached from the main building. Didn't realise "lodge" and "squat" meant the same thing.

Without doubt the smallest room I have ever stayed in. Looked as though the room had been built around the bed as it was hard to see how they could have fitted it in. No features in the room (including no TV!!) apart from a wardrobe with an ill fitting door. Room itself was dark and gloomy. Bedside lamp didn't work and the main light have a 70's style shade, full of insects....

Thinking things couldn't be worse, we checked the bathroom. Barely a port-a-loo, the toilet seat was broken, the shower curtain ingrained with mold and the shower only worked on reduced pressure. Suffice to say, we only stayed in here to change and to sleep.

Apart from a half decent breakfast, there are no redeeming features from our stay here. I can only presume that the room displayed on their website for lodge accommodation, is from a different hotel. It won't be the one you're getting.

In closing, I recommend if reception mention the word lodge, about turn and find another hotel. Or stay in the car. I promise it will give more peace of mind.

Based on Previous comments we upgraded to the Main Building. Highly recommend that this be done based on other comments. The room was very large with lovely sitting area as well. The bathroom was my only complaint as there was not much room. Breakfast was lovely. I would also add that it would be nice to add Oatmeal to breakfast menu. We stayed a few days and found that it was a lovely place to stay. Well worth the money that was spent.

Stayed at this hotel for one night following a family members wedding, as they had recommended the hotel I did not look at any reviews as I normally would have - wish I had.
We paid £90 for one of the lodge rooms and my husband and I were hoing for a romantic night together. This is the last thing we got. The room was tiny with twin beds and a wardrobe squeezed into it, when it really should have been a single room. Every time my husband moved he hit his head / arm / leg on a piece of furniture or the sloping ceiling and he isn't even that big. In summary the room made us feel like we were back in university halls or even in an old peoples home, it was very institutionalised and not at all romantic.

We spent 5 nights a\t this hotel and were very impressed with everything about it - the service, the atmosphere and the breakfast. There was convenient shuttle service to the train and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Highly recommended

We were a little apprehensive about the hotel since the rates were quite low (£56.50 per night) but upon arrival we pleasantly suprised to find that the hotel is located in a beautiful private estate and the hotel itself is gorgeous. The room we stayed in seemed very new (recently renovated?) and the staff were very friendly and helpful. It's about 15minute drive to the Edinburgh city center or about 10 minutes drive to two "Park and Ride" stations. We definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who's going to Edinburgh!

We booked a lodge room described on the website as "modest". Imagine the disappointment to arrive in a room that barely held a double bed. Any spare floorspace was taken up entirely once we set our suitcases down. After travelling for 7 hours this was not a good start to the weekend.

I went to reception to express my concerns and ask for a refund and was told there was no-one available to authorise a refund. The receptionist said she would get someone to contact me over the next couple of days. I was quite amazed that on a Friday afternoon there was no-one in management available to deal with such issues. Eventually the receptionist agreed to try and contact the owner (who I was told was in Stirling). Half an hour later I returned to reception, and was told that the owner was in fact there and was on his way to see me. After waiting a further half hour I went back to reception and waited patiently for the owner to arrive.

We were offered a 4 bedroom self catering house in the grounds of the hotel and accepted this as the owner made it quite clear we would not be getting a refund. The house itself has massive potential but needs a total refurbishment. The bathroom is dated and hot water was non-existent from Saturday lunchtime! One of the windows in the bedroom wouldn't even close properly!

The grounds around the hotel are indeed stunning but sadly the accommodation fell far below the the standard we expected and we were thoroughly disappointed.
