Our second visit last November and we will be back. The hotel was lovely and warm with real log fires in the lounge in the evenings, If you want an up-to-the minute bathroom, try Room 10 - the bathroom is fabulous, and the bedrom has fantastic views over the bay. We love this hotel which is the perfect place for a relaxing break,

The food is to die for, and the views and location superb.
Everything else leaves a lot to be desired. Attitude by the manager/owner? makes you feel on edge and unwelcome. Rooms need serious updating and the bed was incredibly uncomfortable, that I just couldn't sleep. Cleaning needs to be a bit more vigorous (dusty and bits left on carpet. Bedspread needed a wash, it looked old and dirty). Would not go back, which is a shame, because the food was incredibly good.

On arrival the welcome was cold. The response we got when we asked whether we needed to book a time for dinner or whether we could book a window seat was one of impatience. No we could not book a time or seat just turn up between 7.00 and 8.30. The sea view which we paid extra for allowed us to see a small section of the sea from our room, room two, set back on the left side of the building. The en suite was very dated and in need of a makeover. The television was tiny and impossible to watch unless sat close up.
The food and service were very good. Unfortunately most of the residents come prepared to retire directly to bed after the meal. The bar is supposed to stay open until 11.00pm but by 10.00pm we were being asked to give any last orders because the bar is closing. This happened both on Sat. and friday nights. When we questioned this we were told that this is what the resdents expect. And it is true everyone went straight to bed. We were allowed to stay up in the lounge alone but all the lights bar one were turned off around us by 10.30. It felt a little like we were in boot camp. Don't go if you expect an evening relaxing/ talking after your meal. Its straight to bed.

We stayed at Balcary Bay for 1 night en route to further north in Scotland. The hotel has a fantastic location right on the sea, and our room had a great view - or it would have done if it had not been pouring with rain. Well, this was Scotland. The room was large and comfortable, and had the usual amenities. The furniture, like some other aspects of the hotel, was a little old. Two things about the room were disappointing: the bathroom was pink, and had a sloping ceiling over the bath, which would make having a shower a bit difficult if you were very tall. Though the public rooms downstairs were lovely, upstairs the corridors were ruined by poorly installed fire precautions, that just looked cheap. Dinner was included in our rate, just as well as there is nowhere else to eat in miles, and it was superb, one of the best meals of the year. Breakfast was equally good. Overall, think of the Balcary almost as a restaurant with rooms and you will not be disappointed.

The whole atmosphere of this Hotel is 'unwelcoming and unfriendly'. The en-suite in our room had a threadbare carpet and a shower screen that was rusty. The television was a tiny portable with all 4 stations unwatchable. When paying the bill, I offered some friendly feedback by suggesting they put freeview in all their rooms. The comment I recieved was, "that has nothing to do with me". Uncaring towards customers. We will not be back!

Just home from a wonderful two day break with my husband and his cousin, What a great find. great hotel, good food, and the sea views to die for,

The lady on reception was great. This was her first week and in my opinion she is an asset to the hotel.

We would love to go back some time again

Turned up at 2:00pm to sus the place out for possible future stay. Asked for coffee...."sorry, still serving lunch, can't do coffee!!Come back at 3:00pm when afternoon tea starts" Unwelcome smell of rancid fat confirmed our decision not to book. (B&B next door looked much more appealing)
