“Perfect for everyone!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2013

I have recently stayed at the Westlodge park hotel and had a very enjoyable stay. The customer service was outstanding and I felt truly looked after from the moment I walked in. The surrounding grounds are beautiful, it was nice to wake up and open the curtains to such views. The bedroom was extremely clean and tidy, and room services were to at the ready if needed.

I enjoyed a light snack in the main restaurant on the night of my stay which was just the right portion size and well presented, a pianist playing in the background was also a nice extra. Breakfast the next morning was also great and the restaurant staff are so very polite and helpful.

The hotel is also 10 minutes away from cockfosters tube station which is great for getting to in to busy London and then enjoying a peacefull night stay at Westlodge park.

I definitely recommend this hotel and will be returning very soon.

Thank you to Dave Seward and Adam Brooks for being so welcoming.

Stayed 1 night with evening meal and breakfast as part of a deal, staff all very friendly and welcoming unlike some chain hotels. Quality of the food was excellent, locally sourced and well cooked. The hotel isn't modern but has style and ambience, nice grounds and lots of surrounding countyside for walks.

Thank you for your review of West Lodge Park,

I am so glad we looked after you well, and that you enjoyed all aspects of your stay.

I keep my boat just up the road from you in Buckden Marina, and it is used all summer for staff trips down the river Great Ouse to the Cock at Hemingford Grey which is the UK Pub of the Year 2013, and something of an inspiration for our team in the Mary Beale restaurant.

It would be a pleasure to welcome you back soon.

With kind regards,

Visited recently for afternoon tea and was not disappointed. The grounds itself are really nice, perfect for a spring day. The hotel restaurant is charming, with a piano playing in the background. The food itself was really tasty and a perfect treat. I would recommend.

Thank you for your review following afternoon tea at West Lodge Park.

I am delighted that we looked after you well, and that it was a nice spring day for you.

Our lawns are receiving their second cut of the year already, and the smell of freshly cut grass fills me with hope that finally winter might be at an end and that our guests can once again enjoy the beautiful 35 acres of grounds around the hotel.

Do come again soon !

I would not have chosen to stay in this hotel had it not been for its Trip Advisor ratings (which are fully deserved). Mostly "privately owned country house hotel" means tired, threadbare and lacking in investment. Definitely not the case here. Firstly, initial impressions are excellent – a long drive to an impressive looking building. The hotel is surrounded by a beautifully cared for and fascinating arboretum. Reception was warm and friendly. We had taken advantage of a prior booking offer – you book and pay several weeks in advance in return for a discount on the room which works for the customer and presumably for the hotel's cash flow. We stayed in a luxury room (number 50) which had plenty of space, a lovely bathroom which had recently been refurbished and was very well equipped throughout with a very comfortable bed and, importantly for me, really good quality pillows. The room was very warm and, as there is no air conditioning, it is possible that in the summer months it could be quite hot. The decor and general finish of the room and the hotel overall was excellent – well decorated, nice carpets and attractive, comfortable furniture.

We had dinner in the restaurant which was fine. It was very much what you would expect given its rating by the AA. Service is very good – not obtrusive but very satisfactory. Some people have mentioned elsewhere in their reports on this website that the bar drinks are quite expensive and I would concur. I paid over £30 for a relatively indifferent bottle of wine. Breakfast was very good with lots of choice and the high-quality appearance of the restaurant from the previous evening was maintained – crisp linen, good-quality crockery and good service.

Overall, this was a very positive experience indeed in a hotel where customer care is at the forefront. I looked around some of the function rooms and they looked really nice – probably a great place for weddings and similar celebrations. Everything was of high quality and difficult to fault. Would I change anything? Yes! They are small points, but the towels in my room had been to the laundry a few times too often and needed to be replaced – towels in a high-quality hotel should be fluffy and not scratchy! While the menu was good, there were seven "supplement" options: I think if you are going to offer a menu it should be complete and you should not have to add in expenditure to get what you want. Finally, the dress code for the restaurant in the evening is "smart casual" which is fine by me, but evidently not by the man turned up in jeans and sneakers and got away with it.

I can highly recommend this excellent location and intend to return in the summer when I can see the arboretum in its full glory.

Room Tip: I thought that upgrading to a luxury room was well worthwhile.

Thank you for a really detailed review of West Lodge Park.

I particularly appreciate reviews from people who have travelled a lot and seen the good, the bad, and the ugly out there in the world of hotels.

I am so pleased we looked after you well, and that nearly all aspects of your stay were most satisfactory.

A word about investment in hotels, you are right that there are a lot of tired and under-invested hotels around, due both to the sheer length of this recession, but also to the large hotel chains who have taken hotels originally in private hands and year after year taken the profit from them without re-investing much of the proceeds.

At Beales Hotels, we have been going since 1769 and eight generations later have family pride at stake which is why we reinvest for the benefit of our guests. That is not to say that this recession hasn't been tough, but we have invested £1/4M this year into West Lodge Park, and I am pleased that you noticed the results of this on your visit.

I will attend to the towels, and will look again at the wine list.

Many thanks for a very comprehensive review and it would be a pleasure to show you round the arboretum on your next visit.

Kindest regards,

Andrew Beale

A function in St Albans with Lord and Lady Buxton-Hamilton presented us with the perfect excuse to indulge in another overnight stay in this wonderful hotel. As always, the welcome was warm and all the hotel Staff, without exception, went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. This time we stayed in the Turquoise Room which had a wonderful view over the gardens, a magnificent 4 poster bed and a spa bath - what a treat! A delicious breakfast this morning rounded off another delightful stay. West Lodge Park is our favourite Hotel and we look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: Every room we have had has been lovely but the Turquoise Room is a worthwhile special indulgence.

Thank you for your kind review of West Lodge Park.

I am so glad we looked after you well, and that your visit was a complete success.

I am glad that you enjoyed Turquoise Room, (Room 4). We currently have 59 bedrooms in the hotel, and although Room 4 is a lovely room, I don't think that it is in my top 5 favourites, which just goes to show that everyone has different tastes.

The joy of our website is that we have copious photos of every single bedroom and also of the view from every single window ! This enables our guests to select what suits them from contemporary design, to more splendidly traditional.

Do come again, it will be a pleasure to welcome you back again !

I stayed here whilst on business down in London. The location is great - it is easy to get the tube into London, but you are nowhere near the hustle and bustle of city. The hotel is a very relaxing place to stay and anybody visiting must take a walk around the grounds, which are beautiful.
My room was extremely comfortable, absolutely spotless and my stay there was perfectly enjoyable. I had breakfast in the hotel restaurant both mornings and the food was delicious with a selection of fruits, pastries and cooked breakfast.

All in all, I would recommend this Hotel to anybody staying in or around London.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of West Lodge Park after your recent trip down from Newcastle.

I am glad you enjoyed the hotel and the grounds and glad too that you found the hotel handy for central London.

Cockfosters Tube is just a mile away - unlimited parking is available here for £5 per weekday, £2 per day on Saturdays and bank holidays, and £1.50 per day on Sundays.

Travelcards for unlimited tube and bus travel after 9.30am weekdays, and all day Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays are currently £8.80 for adults.

I think the combination of car parking cheaper than is often the case, and the travelcards which are way cheaper than rail, make visiting London for the day a real bargain.

And it is so nice to be able to get back to the lovely countryside and grounds surrounding West Lodge Park in the evening.

Do come again, next time you are down from the North East !

We visited the hotel on the 6th April for a wedding reception. It was a beautiful day and was lovely to be in a hotel surrounded by beautiful parkland where the children were able to enjoy the grounds. We ate our lovely buffet outside enjoying the gardens and conservatory where we were. Although there was another wedding reception going on as well you would never have known as we had a lot of rooms to privately celebrate the day. The staff were very attentive and polite and it was a very welcoming and relaxing place to be for a wedding. Highly recommend it and hope to visit again one day.

Thank you for your kind review.

I am glad we looked after you well at the wedding reception you attended and that the children were able to play outside on the lawns,

The weather has not been kind recently so you were lucky to have a good day at the start of April.

Finally spring is in the air, and the daffodils are out, but the trees in the Beale Arboretum have not yet made up their minds whether it is safe to come out of hibernation yet !

Do come again, it would be a pleasure to welcome you back to West Lodge Park.
