Truly authentic Caribbean port town with great fruit and veg markets, souvenirs and trinkets. Try Doris' grocery store just off the main St for an excellent choice of upmarket supplies. Only complaint is that all the jewellery stall holders, vegetable sellers and boutique owners hassle you to buy. If they were to give their customers time and space without pressure they would sell so much more! It's too hot for the hard sell! One's instinct is to get away! It's a shame!

This is a community with much to experience, which is amazingly safe and not at all threatening for a foreigner. Unlike some islands we have experienced, I did not want to avoid downtown, bet kept being drawn to frequent it and explore the many options there. Set in the center by the ferry docks and taxi's is The Bequia Tourism Association, where any questions can be answered.

The port has lots of shops and restaurants which caters for the many yachts that anchor there on their Caribbean adventures. We found that the prices for basic food was very expensive compared to other Caribbean islands. Nice for a bit of a wander but beware of the rip off merchants awaiting you on many corners !! One street vendor tried to charge us EC$20 for 12 eggs.

Great fun to go and visit and lots of fun bars and shops. You definitely have to explore it but we were very glad to get back to the tranquility of our hotel at the Firefly in Spring. The port is a buzzing place but the amplified music blasting out was a bit of a shame as it spoils the otherwise lovely atmosphere of the water front.
