Our son booked this for us as a special birthday/anniversary present. We found it excellent in some respects, disappointing in others. After accepting my sons CC booking by telephone they failed to confirm, on subsequent enquiry he was told that they did not accept CC booking by phone, despite having previously done so. They eventually did accept but could not give us the Saturday/Sunday we wanted, so we went Sunday/Monday. On arrival we discovered what we think to be the real reason behind this, they had a wedding party on the Saturday and wanted the room for wedding guests.
On arriving at the hotel we found every entrance locked and nobody to be seen. After standing outside ringing the bell for 10 mins we were eventually admitted by another guest leaving. We then waited in a deserted hallway for a further 10 mins before anyone arrived to greet us. We were shown to a "superior double" (£135 per night), this was a huge room with a spacious modern bathroom. The room had a very comfortable 4-poster bed, which unfortunately looked like it had come from IKEA. This and other refurbishments carried out by the present owner appeared to be somewhat at odds with the orginal style of the victorian building and detracted from the fine architecture.
The first evening we had a meal in the hotel restaurant (open Wed thru Sun). The meal was excellent in every respect and very good value for the modest price. The next morning we arrived down for breakfast to be met by the owner deep in conversation with other guests in the dining room, he effectively ignored us for about 5 mins leaving us sitting wondering what the routine was in the morning. This conversation mode was repeated the second morning. A friendly mine-host should not be at the cost of the comfort of other guests. Subsequent conversation revealed that he and his wife have owned the hotel for 3 years, with no prior hotel experience or training...it shows. The breakfast was good but not great, I've had better in much cheaper B&B's.
On arriving back at the hotel the second evening we found that our room had not been properly serviced. The tea/coffee tray still had our used cups from the previous day and the various items had not been replenished. Also the used towels were strewn around the bathroom exactly as we had left them that morning. On complaining I was informed that a towel change every day is not in their terms and conditions...at £135 a night, get real. However, we were given some cheesecake as a peace offering.
We enjoyed our stay, this place could potentially be excellent with attention to detail. These country house hotels live or die on their faultless, superb service. This one failed this time around.
