This place has so much to recommend - but the lack of attention to detail does leap out at you and you can only wonder why it doesn't do likewise to the owner/s.

First of all, the rooms are a decent size, clean and comfortable - ideal for a stop off or short break. In fact, the rooms are a pleasant surprise after walking through the corridor towards them, where the carpet is badly in need of cleaning and cupboard doors hung off the towel store. The shower in our room was functional but far from modern. Its doors required some wrestling with and was slow to drain. Whilst the interior of the room was freshly decorated, the exterior sill and window frame was badly in need of a clean - or even replacement. All rooms are close to each other so you have to rely on neighbours being considerate. (We were there during the Lothian and Borders 6.30am door slamming championships).

The food was (mainly) excellent and breakfast was cooked to order and served hot at the table. In the evening, we had very tasty haggis starters as well as first rate mussels. The Lamb and Chicken main courses were also very well received - though not the Gammon which seemed to be processed rather than fresh from the butcher. There is a good choice of wine at reasonable cost. The restaurant is Bistro style. We found it relaxed and comfortable - but a little dingy in places.

The strength of The Gordon Arms is with the staff. Every one of them was personable, welcoming and efficient at what they did.

If only the management could invest a little and afford to pay a part time handy person with an eye for detail, this place really could go up a notch.

Room Tip: All rooms are adjacent and receive some traffic noise - but those to the side or rear probably recei...

Stayed here for one night.....that was enough !!! Rooms & decor terrible. Carpets throughout filthy with big iron scorch marks on bedroom floor. Staff nice but place minging. Especially at £75 per night. Have stayed in better places for half that.

We ate in the bar and restaurant and both excellent. The bar has a big warm welcoming pen log fire :)

We went in for a pub lunch myself my wife and two daughters, the place was empty apart from a constant stream of people going in and out to the beer garden setting up a party for later that day.we waited ages for our food and we only ordered main courses, which was fish and chips .when it did eventually come it was half cooked ,come on its fish and chips for gods sake.we were not charged for it and they were very sorry about it but it did spoil the lunch ,sorry wont be back for food.

Thought I should put a review up after dining with my wife and another couple at The Gordon Arms Hotel

We booked a table about a month ago as we are travelling up from Liverpool to Dundee to see my sister.

Today as we were travelling up, I read the previous review about the terrible service and terrible food, of course we then began to question that we had chose well or not? After much arguing with the wife we decided to give it a go seeing as we were tired and hungry....Thank goodness we did, we arrived at The hotel and were greeted by the friendly staff. We took our table in the restaurant, the menu was to suit everyone's taste, weather it's pub grub you want or more fancier food you are spoiled for choice. I chose the steak pie on the advice of the manager who said he has this very often, my wife chose Gammon while our friends both had fish and chips.

The above complaint seemed to say that there food took a while to come, perhaps the chef just had an off day that day because our food was out within 20 mins of ordering, and the chef certainly wasn't having an off day today. The steak pie was to die for, meat was tender, lots of gravy just the way I like it, My wife's gammon looked good too, her favourite bit was the pineapple salsa and the hand cut chips!! Our friends said they really enjoyed their fish 'n' chips, they couldn't even finish it it was that big!!

All in all, after getting worried from reading the above comment we were really happy we decided to stick with The Gordon Arms Hotel. We will be back!!

We took the judges from our local Flower Show for lunch here as we do every year - a total of 11 people.

Service is never quick but today they were slower than ever before. We waited over an hour and a half after ordering to get our food and this only after numerous complaints to the staff. When it arrived we were given frozen chips which had been overcooked to the stage where a fork had problems piercing them, A risotto was so salty it was sent back. The staff didn't think that we had anything to complain about!! All this in a restaurant which had no other customers when we arrived.

We were told that the chef would be coming out to talk to us but needless to say he failed to appear.

An embarrassing episode as we had guests from outside the village present. We will not be back here again.

The beer was cold the food was good, the bar maids were pretty & we had a free upgrade. My only small niggle was we couldn't pick up wifi in the room. Would stay again. Oh and the breakfast was good too.
