We had a particularly bad experience at this restaurant with rooms. We are a young couple with a young family. Big fans of food and wine and have been working our way around The Good Food Guide for some time now and will continue to do so.
An early flight from Edinburgh provided us with an opportunity to visit the BB.
We phoned in advance to book a babysitter and were advised this was not necessary as the hotel offered free WiFi and that as we had a baby cam we would be fine. 'Result' we thought....
On arrival we established that though there was WiFi, it did not work in our room. I went to speak to reception in order to find a solution and was 'confronted' by the owner and Chef who accused me of lying about the WiFi/baby cam solution. He was confrontational in the extreme. I kept calm. We came up with what appeared to be a a viable solution of putting my son in the office whilst we dined which I was assured would allow us to connect the cam as it was 'within range'.
My wife arrived for our dinner reservation at 2000 prompt and asked to have a drink in the lounge whilst we browsed the menu (and whilst i set up the cam and settled our son). The lounge was very busy (great sign the food was good) and begrudgingly we were permitted a drink - unfortunately my 7 month pregnant wife was left to move 2 heavy leather seats and a table to 'construct' a seating area. She was understandably upset.
Our order was eventually taken around 2030. At 2115 at our request we were 'permitted' to take our seat in the restaurant. No WiFi connectivity. Major issue. Still no sign of food. I suggested we forget dinner and was again confronted by the aggressive chef/owner who I think should stay in the kitchen. Had I been female or smaller in stature (I am 6ft2") I would have been very intimidated.
We left for the dining room and thought the matter was at an end. The restaurant manager came to our room, visibly agitated. She suggested we would not be required to pay for dinner or the room as long as she "didn't hear about the experience from other sources". I didn't morally appreciate the suggestion that we could be bribed to not share our experience with friends, family or on Tripadvisor. We paid and left for our flight early the following morning.
One of the strangest experiences we have had whilst dining. I would not wish to put others off eating here though as the reviews and what we saw clearly indicate the cooking is of a very high standard. The owners and staff are also clearly passionate about their product and that is fantastic to see. Shame it was such a bad experience for us.
