“Do not doubt the quality of the food but need to improve on service”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

We had a particularly bad experience at this restaurant with rooms. We are a young couple with a young family. Big fans of food and wine and have been working our way around The Good Food Guide for some time now and will continue to do so.

An early flight from Edinburgh provided us with an opportunity to visit the BB.

We phoned in advance to book a babysitter and were advised this was not necessary as the hotel offered free WiFi and that as we had a baby cam we would be fine. 'Result' we thought....

On arrival we established that though there was WiFi, it did not work in our room. I went to speak to reception in order to find a solution and was 'confronted' by the owner and Chef who accused me of lying about the WiFi/baby cam solution. He was confrontational in the extreme. I kept calm. We came up with what appeared to be a a viable solution of putting my son in the office whilst we dined which I was assured would allow us to connect the cam as it was 'within range'.

My wife arrived for our dinner reservation at 2000 prompt and asked to have a drink in the lounge whilst we browsed the menu (and whilst i set up the cam and settled our son). The lounge was very busy (great sign the food was good) and begrudgingly we were permitted a drink - unfortunately my 7 month pregnant wife was left to move 2 heavy leather seats and a table to 'construct' a seating area. She was understandably upset.

Our order was eventually taken around 2030. At 2115 at our request we were 'permitted' to take our seat in the restaurant. No WiFi connectivity. Major issue. Still no sign of food. I suggested we forget dinner and was again confronted by the aggressive chef/owner who I think should stay in the kitchen. Had I been female or smaller in stature (I am 6ft2") I would have been very intimidated.

We left for the dining room and thought the matter was at an end. The restaurant manager came to our room, visibly agitated. She suggested we would not be required to pay for dinner or the room as long as she "didn't hear about the experience from other sources". I didn't morally appreciate the suggestion that we could be bribed to not share our experience with friends, family or on Tripadvisor. We paid and left for our flight early the following morning.

One of the strangest experiences we have had whilst dining. I would not wish to put others off eating here though as the reviews and what we saw clearly indicate the cooking is of a very high standard. The owners and staff are also clearly passionate about their product and that is fantastic to see. Shame it was such a bad experience for us.

Room Tip: Go for the deluxe room.

We spent two nights at the Barley Bree with our college aged children while touring the area. We booked the dinner and room package and enjoyed every minute of it. Alison is a wonderful hostess and Fabrice is a magician in the kitchen! We had two standard rooms. The rooms were well appointed and the beds large and comfortable. The bathrooms were spacious and well supplied. The rooms face the main road in Muthill but the evenings are quiet so it was not a problem even with our window open for a breeze. (we were there during a spot of hot weather so I was glad the road was quiet at night) The lounge downstairs is a wonderful place to catch a glass of wine or a pint before dinner. It is has several cozy seating groups and is a welcoming place to linger. I can only imagine how lovely it would be in the winter with the fireplace going. Dinner, where to begin? As I said Fabrice is a magician. The ingredients were exceeding fresh and while the dishes are classically styled there was just a twist to make them exciting. I could describe individual dishes but with the constantly changing menu it would be for naught. He changes the menu every couple of days depending on what if available. Since we were going to be there for two nights in a row the menu was the same. Knowing that they offered to prepare something different for us the second night. What hospitality! There were enough tempting things on the menu that we were happy with it as is. The dinner guests were a mix of locals and those staying in the rooms. Breakfast is an equally delicious experience and as others have mentioned the bread is to die for! We got to spend some time after dinner chatting with both Alison and Fabrice who are absolutely charming and their hospitality is warm and inviting. As we were leaving the last morning Fabrice dashed out of the kitchen to catch us at the car to wish us well on our journey. They truly love what they are doing and is shows in every way at the Barley Bree.

We stopped here for 1 night whilst travelling around Scotland.
Fortunately we made a dinner reservation when we booked our room (only 3 nights earlier).
The room was clean, comfortable and practical.
The restaurant (dinner and breakfast), service and quality was excellent.
Well worth a visit.

Had lunch here, great food, lovely wee place, would highly recommend. We are looking forward to trying the dinner menu next time. Would be ideal for small wedding or birthday celebrations. Small but you have space and aren't jammed together like sardines.
Well worth a visit.

We stayed one night at this small restaurant with rooms as a stopover on our way to the far north of Scotland. In spite of being very busy on a Sunday afternoon we were given a warm welcome by Alison and shown to our standard room overlooking the street. However, it proved to be not too busy a road especially at night. The room was smallish but had a large comfortable bed, ensuite bathroom with large shower and lovely fluffy towels although the choice of toilettries was limited compared to most other Scottish places we visited.
The food was outstanding, especially the bread!! Once again the staff were attentive and friendly and the dining room interesting. We would not hesitate to make this a regular stopping point on our way through and would be quite likely to stay longer.

We have just returned from visiting for the second time with a group of friends and once again the hospitality and the food were excellent – everything adds up to a fantastic experience. The relaxed approach of the very professional staff made us all feel welcome and at home from the moment we arrived. You must visit!

We came here at the end of May for my birthday having been recommended to try it by a friend.

We were so glad we did. What a fantastic hidden gem and only half an hour from where I live.

There were 4 of us and we had a lovely meal, 3 courses each. Excellent quality of food and beautifully displayed. Attentive and helpful waiting staff.

I had a lovely birthday and the icing on the cake was coming here. I recommend you try it. You will not be disappointed.
