The Phoenix hotel Yogyakarta is my favorite hotel in Indonsesia. The service is perfect, the hotel is very beautiful. The atmosphere is magic, in the patio, with the gamelan players during the delicious breakfast.
Phoenix hotel is not only a beautiful place to stay. It's also an immersion in the Javanese culture...

I stayed at the hotel during a business trip, the hotel is just great ! The rooms are clean and large, the buffet breakfast was a feast and the staff could not do enough for me. A lovely hotel with a lot of character. Cannot fault it.

Fantastic stay !

Excellent colonial styled hotel well appointed and located within the city. Enjoyed some good meals including one spectacular dinner.
Having a refreshing swim post a busy day was much appreciated as were the pillow treats as a part of the turn down service. Recommend requesting a room overlooking the pool towards the rear of the building enjoy the tranquility and to avoid possible traffic noise

This is marketed as a ‘colonial style’ hotel. (4* or 5*, I don’t care about this). Value for service was probably the worst place I stayed at in Indonesia (I stayed 3 nights).
The shower in my room did not work properly. That was quickly fixed.
I was supposed to have a ‘Superior Room’, don’t know what was superior about it, except perhaps it had a balcony overlooking the tiles of the receptions roof?
Compared to other hotels I stayed in (of a lesser rating), the room was small, the bathroom was just adequate.
My main complaint about this hotel is the restaurant. Except for being extravagantly expensive, the quality is nil. Knowing, how Indonesian food is prepared and should taste, I know. The Nasi Goreng & Crab, was plainly inedible (one needed a shovel to push the rice down one’s throat). Even the krupuk was bad. Fortunately, I only ate one dinner at the hotel and will never have another there again.
Breakfast was without any doubt the worst I had in Indonesia. Indonesian breakfast (with rice, meat etc. was available. An ordinary ‘European/American’ was extremely limited. To find the croissants or other bread, you need a magnifying glass! Except for only one type of jam, nothing else was available. No cold meats or cheese, or anything. One day there was some yoghurt, the other day not. The choice of fresh fruits was everyday limited to watermelon and pineapple – and once mango as well (!). What surprised me most is that no eggs (omelette, poached, fried, scrambled or whatever) were available any of the 3 days I had breakfast at the hotel. But inedible pancakes were with crème or syrup were!
The staff were OK, not overly friendly, but nothing to complain about.
If you’re going to stay in Yogyakarta, look around for another hotel. I don’t recommend The Phoenix.

Dear hervecoenen,

On behalf of the Team of the Phoenix hotel we would like to apologize if we could not reach your entire satisfaction.

Regarding your comments we would like to express our surprise, especially regarding the service of our Breakfast; we actually have an Egg Station where every guest can order the egg preparations of their choice (poached, scrambled, fried, boiled, omelette...), we also offer a large selection of cheeses and some cold cuts (without pork). We also propose 4 different sliced fruits and 4 whole fruits every day, plus our fresh juice station.

Again, we are really sorry if we could not meet your expectations, we will try to progress in the future for the total satisfaction of every guest.

Best Regards,
