The impressive reviews and pictures of the hotel convinced me to stay here with our friends on a brief 3day visit to Jogjakarta and Borobudur. And what a wise decision it was! Check-in was handled promptly and smoothly and our request for rooms in a quiet side of the hotel was granted having been assigned a room on the third floor of the main building with a balcony view of Mt. Merapi which you can catch early in the morning when the clouds have not come in yet. Our room was reasonably sized with twin beds, high ceiling, all the needed amenities and the old world charm it is known for. A refreshing shower awaits every guest with the rain shower effect that was most welcome.

Everything about the hotel makes it feel like you're staying at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, except the prices are perhaps a quarter of what you would pay at Raffles! The lobby and other public areas were well laid out, it made you want to stay and just lounge around the hotel the whole day, which we couldn't do because we had a full itinerary during our brief stay.

The complimentary breakfast spread was very extensive with international and local fare and everything else you would want for an excellent breakfast to prep you up for the day's activities.

Over-all, an excellent stay at this hotel. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone!

We stayed in this hotel for two nights as part of a tour of Indonesia in June 2012.
We recommend the hotel without reservation. If we wanted to be very picky, the bar was very quiet and a little out of the way.
The road outside the hotel was very busy but the traffic noise was not a problem.
Apart from that the hotel was really good.

The best thing about this hotel is the service - it's impeccable. Its breakfast spread is also famous in Yogyakarta and one of the best I've very had anywhere. At the same time, the hotel is huge and it can feel a bit impersonal. It's also expensive (in relative terms) and after being charged for every single thing (using a computer, expensive car service, etc.), it can start to feel annoying. And no one ever uses the beautiful swimming pool - could it be that everyone is too cool for that?

We only stayed overnight and it was one of the best hotels we have stayed in,the service was excellent we could not find any faults with the hotel anywhere. The breakfast buffet was terrific,we could have stayed in there till lunch time and still not have got around the whole buffet. The airport was only a short drive away, which gave us plenty of time to do some last minute shopping before we left Yogya. Overall we thought it was a great place to stay the pool side decor made it a very relaxing stay. When we return to Indonesia will deffinetly stay at The Hotel Phoenix again

Room tip: Pick a room with a balcony that overlooks the pool
