Dear Innes K. Many thanks for taking the time to write us a review. We are extremely happy that you enjoyed your visit with us and do hope that you come back again soon!
The hotel staff did a wonderful job in providing a great 3 course meal for a party of 47 people who were celebrating a 50th Birthday & last Munro (same person). The bar had a good selection of real ales. Feedback from most guests I spoke to was that they enjoyed the meal and were impressed by the staffs abilities to serve so many in one sitting.
Dear Neil4993. Many thanks for taking the time to write us a review. We are over joyed that you enjoyed your meal with us. It was our pleasure cooking and serving it for you! We do hope that you join us again soon!
Situated in Glen Clova with beautiul scenery all around, it offers good food at resonable prices and a very welcoming atmosphere. The Manager and Staff are very helpfull and cheerfull. An ideal spot to climb to Loch Brandy and view the Glens. My wife and I have enjoyed this Hotel several times recently and hope to continue. I should add, that you should drive to the Hotel by the top road and exit by the bottom road, It is an unwritten rule for the people who live there.
Dear Jim M. many thanks for taking the time to write us a review. We are extremely pleased that you have enjoyed every stay that you have had with us. Its great that you took the time to find out about the unwritten one way route also! We look forward to seeing you again soon!
I live locally and regularly take friends to lunch here so it can't be that bad. The positives: The setting is great and I highly recommend the walk up to Loch Brandy (and higher) behind the hotel. The climbing bar has a great atmosphere and I can take the dog in. There is normally some decent real ales to sample. Not many tables though so book in advance at peak times or with a larger party.
The just all rights: the food is acceptable but nothing special - the usual pub grub. The service is a bit hit and a miss. I've been served by some great staff, but also by some rubbish ones.
The negatives ... I've had a couple of bad experiences with foul-mouthed guests in the climbers bar: one time with locals, one time with tourists. Not the hotel's fault I know ... but not pleasant when I have kids with me. I would avoid the annual beer fest for this reason.
We stayed for a week as a family of four in a Clova lodge. I cannot fault how clean the lodge was upon arrival. However arrival was somewhat of a let down. We arrived just before the actual arrival time of 4 and were presented with a reception with glass windows closed, however a lady behind the windows. Having knocked on the glass and clearly having upset her, I was greeted with "Uh hu" or some other less than impressing grunt. We were then told the lodge wasn't ready. We then found others waiting to get into their lodge. Promises of informing us when the lodge would be ready never materialised and at 4.45pm, I enquired again and was then presented with the key. Not the way to start any holiday.
The lodge it's self has everything needed as a home from home and is comfortable. The zips on the back of the sofas were all broken and looked rather tatty. I can only assume some guests use them as a trampoline. There are signs in every drawer and cupboard informing you of what should be present and any breakages may incur a charge. We found this all a tad unnecessary having stayed in luxury self catering before and never encounter so many signs.
The hot tub was cleaned daily and turned up to full heat everytime. We found 38c better and would turn it down after the daily clean. The sauna was great and very effective.
Out door space was great and the views were very impressive. We walked from the lodge nearly daily and used the hotel restaurant once and found the food very nice.
Kirriemuir was around 25 mins drive away where there is a Co-Op and around 35 mins away is Forfar with a great Tescos which we used to stock up on the normal family bits.
There is a cracking child's play area at the Camera Obsecura site in Kirriemuir. Peter Pan themed play area which the kids loved.
Very pleasant stay, shame about the arrival, which I guess could be down to the lady having a bad day.
Dear Ianwith2eyes, many thanks for taking the time to post a review and we are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay in our Clova Lodges. We are disappointed that your holiday started the way it did, our check in time is 4pm and although we endeavour to try and get our lodges ready before then, on occasions it is 4pm before they are ready. It is however normal procedure for one of the team to advise you when your lodge is ready and we are sorry to hear this wasn’t carried out. We have taken on board your other comments and we will rethink our cupboard and drawer inventories. We are also in the process of trying to source someone to repair the sofas, it is unfortunate that previous guests perhaps haven’t been so respectful of the lodges possessions. We do hope the above won’t put you off staying with us again and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
Just back from wonderful stay with Dumfries ramblers group at bunkhouse at Glen Clova. Despite being in the cheaper accommodation, we were royally treated by all staff. Breakfasts and dinners were outstanding quality and choice, made with local produce. The staff were all extremely helpful and pleasant. The place was very busy with the Mountain Rescue's first Duathlon but this and the fabulous weather on Saturday only heightened our enjoyment (AND we climbed 2 munros!). Sunday was pretty wet initially but awesome scenery all round and plenty low level walks on offer. Just the best all round weekend in a lovely place and hopefully next time I can take husband and dog and stay in the hotel!
