“Loch Kinord Aberdeenshire”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2013

For the purpose of my review bias, for the last 11 years I have stayed approximately 100 nights a year in the Intercontinental / Holiday Inn Group chain.
So this was the perfect opportunity to try something different for a change.
Date of stay 20/5/13
My ongoing experience of the hotel is as follows:

1) Arrival is easy using the Sat Nav and post code address instructions.
2) On arrival at the hotel the check in staff member was extremely pleasant and friendly.
3) On arrival, it was discovered that I had booked during the busiest week in Aberdeen (oil conference week). This meant the room I had booked (a single ordinary room) had been double booked. However this was no problem and was replaced by a free Woodside cabin to the rear of the hotel, what a fantastic upgrade.
3) All area’s including the bedrooms where always well kept, tidy and clean
6) The cabin was excellent SEE the photos
7) Sadly I did not get a chance to sample breakfast as it only starts a little later than your average hotel as I had to be in the center of Aberdeen at 8.30am each day (about an hour away)
8) The evening meals, where a delight and cooked and served by people with a passion.
9) Check out, was straight forward and hassle free.
In summary the hotel scores 4/5 for a nice countryside change to my normal Holiday Inn experience.

Located mid Royal Deeside this wee gem of a hotel is a great base to explore; Loch Kinord is one of the most beautiful areas in Scotland. There is a walk around the loch with a viewing platform over the loch. I stayed for four nights then returned for a second stay a few weeks later. The food (steaks) is to die for. Don't expect an early cooked breakfast as the restaurant opens at 8am however you can start off early with a continental breakfast.
The rooms I stayed in were on the small side, this just added to the country house feel. The staff were very attentive. if you choose this hotel you won't be disappointed in any way.

Room Tip: There are chalets in the hotel grounds on the path towards the Loch

The hotel is in a great location, near the lovely village of Aboyne and a short drive away from the likes of Ballater and Braemar in Royal Deeside. It is a very attractive looking building and the owners appear to have made a real effort to spruce up the exterior. There are a number of park home type cabins built around the rear of the building which appear to cater for the many fishermen and shooting enthusiasts that visit the area. The hotel is also a short walk away from the delightful Loch Kinord, which is a truly stunning location and a wonderful place to visit.

The public rooms are full of character and a really enjoyable place to relax, but they are slightly spoilt by ugly stereo speakers hanging off the walls with awful piped lift music on continuous loop. The restaurant is very attractively decorated and was very busy whilst we were there, we only ate breakfast which was pleasant, if rather limited in both scope and quantity whilst sadly and surprisingly lacking in any highland character.

Unfortunately the worst part of our stay by a country mile was the room; it was one of the worst rooms I have ever stayed in. We genuinely would have left, but it was very late, we had already paid and were too tired to try and argue. The room was tiny, the walls were damaged and scuffed and the ancient tv was missing parts of the exterior with a broken remote. On the upside, the curtains were new.

The en suite was a total joke, it was utterly tiny with a door that did not even close that had a massive ironing board and iron strapped to the back, which made it even smaller in there. The toilet roll holder was broken with rolls stacked up on the cistern and the light fitting was broken off and stowed behind the sink. The shower was a lukewarm dribble sprayed in a variety of directions, none of which appeared to hit me and the general demeanour in there was one of decay.

Overall, this is a very promising and mostly attractive hotel with pleasant owners, that is clearly being invested in; but it is certainly not cheap and needs to do a lot of very basic housekeeping and maintenance if it is to justify its price and reputation.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room first.

Lovely hotel, every inch of what the top reviews say. We didn't eat here as we had had a late Fternoon Tea in Banchory, so decided to go and see Braemar and Ballater, and found an Italian in Ballater. The room was small but spotless and nice touches with tea, coffee and biscuits in room. The breakfast was excellent and tasty, The host was lovely and we are thinking of coming back next year with friends to stay in the lodges. Would recommend to anyone.

Myself and my wife have stayed a number of times at this fantastic little Hotel just a few miles from all the sites to be seen in Royal Deeside. Our last visit was early June 2013. We stayed the usual 1 night as we have family in Aberdeen and like to escape for a romantic night away together. Every room we have stayed in has always been first class. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. You must have a little stroll down to the Loch from the back of the Hotel. Tranquility at it's best. Take a drink down with you and enjoy the silence and watch the swans swim by. The best of all is the food. We have a 3 course meal from the Hotels ample menu and both of us felt that this was he best meal we have ever had. The Hotel has a 1 Rosette AA Rating, but the quality of the food is well above this level. After complementing the owner on the standard of the food, he informed us his Chef was off for the night and our meal had been prepared by the 2nd Chef. Wow, can't wait to return and catch a meal from the main Chef as our food was absolutely faultless.

We stayed here as part of a stag weekend. The cabins around the back of the resort were well kept, clean and of good quality. The hotel manager was very welcoming and helpful, but some of the other waiting staff were less so, but this maybe due to the nature of our trip. The hotel is remote, requiring vehicle access to nearby towns (the local taxis are expensive but the bus service is regular and convenient) but there is a beautiful loch with breathtaking views 5 minutes walk from the hotel. I think this would be perfect for a short visit for people needing a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Would definitely recommend.

This hotel was a great find with our trusty ipad in hand - we couldn't get a second night in Inverness so we journeyed and reviewed hotels that appealed to us in the Ballater / Balmoral area.
Loch Kinord, especially Andrew and David who took care of us with excellent suggestions for dinner and made us feel welcome in the bar - some great locals we met as well over a few wee 'drams'.

The master bedrooms were great - the "whirlpool" in our room (in Australia this is a washing machine!) was a fantastic extreme shower and bath show - managed to sort out the spa jets and enjoyed the experience immensely!

Great fun and definitely worth at least 2 days there - we only did 1 but will return if we are in Scotland again, especially to stalk deer!!! Robbi & Jeff Tims
