“Remote and Calm but a Few Flaws”
Reviewed February 14, 2014

Earlier this week my sister and I stayed in Cathcart Cottage beside the bridge leading onto the island. We were attending the Cooker School run on the island but not by Belle Isle Estate. The weather was terrible, wet, snowy and windy as in the rest of the UK. We had to collect the access instructions from Reception which was closed when we arrived but the keys were available for us. The heating was on and the whole cottage was very cosy and the photos on the web site are accurate and up to date. The bedrooms are well decorated with a twin and a single bed in each with en-suite shower or bathroom. The kitchen area had everything you need for survival. The dining/lounge area had a wood burning stove with enough wood to last several days. There was an audio system and TV with Freeview.

One down side was that the emergency number mobile we were given didn't work but luckily we didn't have an emergency. When I left the keys back I suggested that more information on the inventory of the cottage on the web site would have been useful and I was met with a disinterested look and the question "what sort of information?" I suggested that availability of hair dryers, the fact that there was a microwave and a few other small items of information would be useful. For anyone who is addicted to the internet, there is no wifi available in the cottages and the mobile phone signal is poor and certainly not 3 or 4G. The Fermanagh Lakeland is one of the most stunning areas of the UK and in spring and summer especially is a beautiful area to visit.

Room Tip: Decide yourselves when you arrive. Both bedrooms are quiet due to the location away from roads. On...

Dear Heresay

I am so pleased you found Cathcart's Lodge cosy and welcoming. Your point about us perhaps not giving enough information about the inventory in the cottages is a good one. As you note the cottages do have items like hairdryers and microwaves, which might not be expected. Thank you for mentioning that you had a problem with the contact number, I have check all our numbers and they are working, I could only suggest that the very bad weather at the time of your visit may have caused the problem. You are correct when you say there is no 3G/4G in the area, we do have WIFI in the courtyard and castle but as yet not in the cottage you stayed in. Hope to see you again when you attend another course at the cookery school. Andrew

Stayed here with my Mum and 2 Sisters in September and although the setting and weather were lovely the Castle and Cottages really need work. Its all self catering so no one really is there to help/direct you in any way. We stayed in the bridge house which was outside of the grounds just at the bridge before crossing the lake. After reading 'a castle on an island' reviews and descriptions we couldn't wait to visit however the house itself was basic. Its really a fishing lodge and not a place for a girly weekend. We did visit the castle and had a look around but were horrified when we seen bedrooms not made up, filthy dirty, breakfasts still left in rooms and dust everywhere. Gave us the creeps as was completely empty and no one renting it but left dirty. We did feel that the bridge house was the best deal! Overall, the castle needs new decor and some love in general. Its dark and dated with some drawing rooms not even in use. The cottages are all on top of each other and in real need of a lick of paint. The decor again is dated and the only nice thing is the new paint colour on the doors of the cottages. Enniskillen is the nearest town and really not a lot going on there. We stayed on a Saturday and Sunday night and was barely anything open. Was impossible to find somewhere to eat out in on Sunday. I did feel Belle Isle really ramp up the 'Castle with Blue Bells on an Island on a Lake' image and in reality the setting is lovely its just a shame about the accommodation and castle itself.

I am so sorry you did not find us as you thought. You stayed in Bridge House which is rated by NITB as a 4 star property for facilities. I am sorry that you were unable to find anywhere open to dine, there is an information pack in each property which gives details of many local restaurants and bars and their trading hours, as well as all the contact numbers for the team at Belle Isle, if you had called any of us we would be more than happy to give you help in finding a suitable restaurant or bar. You say you visited the castle and looked around during the weekend, in fact the castle was at the time occupied by a family group on an exclusive use self-catering break. I can only imaging that there were out for the day and did not lock the door, hence allowing you to gain access. The castle is fully striped and cleaned after every departure, if you would like to see the castle again please call me and I will happily give you a tour. Andrew

We stayed in the castle for a weekend to celebrate my parents 50th wedding anniversary and it was just perfect! All the rooms are beautiful, it was clean, warm and wonderfully peaceful.
When we arrived i told Andrew we planned to barbecue one of the evenings, he told me all the barbeques had been serviced and put away for the winter but that he would get me one. Within minutes he was back with a barbeque for us to use (a great service).
I would highly recommend Belle Isle as the whole family really enjoyed it and look forward to returning in the future!!

I am so glad your parents anniversary went so well and that you enjoyed your time at Belle Isle. Getting the BBQ from storage was no trouble at all, indeed the weather in Fermanagh has been so fantastic in late September and early October that we had to get all the BBQ’s out again. Look forward to welcoming you and your family back to Belle Isle again soon. Andrew

We had an great long weekend break staying in the courtyard 'Lime' . The accommodation was immaculately clean with everything you need for a self-catering break. The grounds around the property are beautiful for an evening stroll. Our family dog really enjoyed his stay also . Really enjoyed our stay we hope to return again soon.

My daughter and I stayed for eight nights at the Ash apartment. The directions for arrival were very precise. The apartment was immaculately clean when we were checked by the office manager, Andrea. After she showed us the apartment, she provided us with a book that explains practically everything one needs to know for one's stay (e.g. how the Internet works, the places for trash disposal, etc.). She had wood sent to the apartment so that we could light the wood-burning stove, and later in the week, she arranged to have the apartment cleaned (against payment of GBP 8 per hour). The general manager, Andrew, also came by to welcome us shortly after our arrival.
There are plenty of paths to explore the island, none of which is difficult, and we did lots of walking. Except for the humming of tractors, the estate is very quiet and peaceful, and even though there were other guests in the courtyard apartments, we barely heard anything.
The estate is a roughly 15-/20-minute drive from Enniskillen where we shopped and attended church. We also had a fabulous Sunday lunch at the 4-star Killyhelvin Hotel which is near Enniskillen. Another fabulous dinner at the Watermill Restaurant, which I chose but Andrea also recommended and booked for us. We stopped in to see Lough Erne Resort, and I was so happy that we had chosen Belle Isle instead. Belle Isle has an atmosphere and ambience that would be hard to repeat.
We had only one small problem that was corrected when reported. The hot water was too hot.
Belle Isle is a 4-star rated self-catering accommodation and I venture that it's at the top of its category.
