Review of Rhymney Brewery

We had parked at the Big Pit and spent the majority of the day there. We were looking got something else to do in the area before driving the hour back to Cardiff. It was a 5 minute walk from the Big Pit.

We found the lady very helpful. She told us that currently the tour is self-guided but she is swotting up so she can lead the tours in the future.

It was very hot inside the actual brewery but still interesting to see how they make the beer.

The other displays were vintage videos which were interesting but a bit long. There were some interactive bits too like giving you the opportunity to try to pull the perfect pint.

I thought the entrance fee was responsible considering you get a bit of a drink at the end in the quaint pub area.

I chanced upon the Brewery after seeing it from the train. There were no signposts so it took determination to find it. I had drunk Rhymney Bitter at university so wanted to see if it was the same brew. The brewhouse is in an industrial unit on an estate and was very clean and easy to view. They have 4 videos from the old company and various diplays about the history of the brewery (both old and new) as well as some artifacts. For a very reasonable admission fee you also get a half of "Hobby Horse". There was also a very pleasant young girl who was happy to show you round if you wanted it.

This place looks very modern and inviting from the outside. It is situated next to the Big Pit mining museum and has plenty of free car parking.
We visited on a very warm July afternoon. There is no air conditioning in any of the visitor areas, and it was stiflingly hot. There is little to see or do inside, with just one viewing gallery of a lot of stainless steel tubs. You are asked to watch several videos which were made about 30 to 40 years ago, and bears no resemblance to the current plant. They were a little embarrassing actually.
So, save your entrance fee and go to the many other attractions in the area.
Avoid.

Well worth a visit. A hidden gem. You get to meet the staff and walk around the brewery and see the process live from start to finish. There is a history area on the brewery and memorabilia. Tasters at the bar were a nice touch and very tasty. You won't be disappointed.
