Wonderful museum in an interested setting, that really explains the importance of the Welsh valleys in world history.

The £1 entrance (November 2010) will give you an insight into the town's history thanks to a very touching tribute to Blaenavon's fallen in the wars, more recent memorabilia and information on colliery accidents. We found the listing for a distant cousin who died in a fall of stone in Varteg. The volunteers we met were interesting and extremely helpful gentlemen. The archive holds census information as well as trade directories. The Alexander Cordell room is at the back of the museum off a corridor with posters depicting book covers in many languages. Although basically a booklined study with his desk and typewriter and other personal effects, there are very many interesting letters and newspaper clippings in scrapbooks. I particularly liked the letter informing Mr Cordell that no royalties would be paid from sales of his book in Russia. It's not the biggest museum in the world and neither does it house priceless antiques but for people like me, following in the footsteps of ancestors, or for fans of Alexander Cordell, it's a little gem...
