“Lovely and friendly village inn”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

I stayed at The Lion for two nights in what was my first ever trip to this part of the country. I was delighted by Berriew. It is a picture perfect village, dominated by an avenue of massively tall lime trees leading to the church, and with many black and white beamed houses typical of the area. There are some great rural walks nearby too (e.g. by the canal).

The Lion was also a great place to stay, right in the heart of the village and in one of the very old black and white beamed buildings. The welcome was friendly; and my bedroom, with a modern ensuite, (both with beams) was at the back of the hotel overlooking the peaceful churchyard. There are two traditional bars in the inn with a good range of drinks and food available. Although I didn't eat a full dinner at the hotel (it has a restaurant too), the snack I did have one evening was very good as were the cooked breakfasts we enjoyed in the mornings.

All in all, a very nice traditional village inn; and one to which I would have no hesitation in returning again.

My wife and I have just returned from a stay at The Lion Hotel and found it to be a delightful place to stay and eat. We had a lovely room (7) which overlooked the church at the rear of the hotel. The room was very clean and comfortable. Our evening meal in the restaurant was well presented and served. There was a wide choice at reasonable prices. We had a good choice at breakfast of both cereal and cooked food. We would not hesitate to stop here again.

We needed a base near Castle Caereinion to participate in the Welsh National Motorcycle Rally. The Lion proved perfect. Welcoming and comfortable, the food was excellent, the rooms clean and well appointed, we couldn't have asked for more. Thank you - and the price was very reasonable too!

Room Tip: Rooms at the front overlook the village, rooms at the back overlook the church. All are lovely.

Just returned from a two day stay at this lovely hotel in Mid Wales. These type of small privatly owned hotels are such good value for money, great food, cosy bedrooms and very friendly staff.

It,s location is in the centre of the village, great walks and some fantastic local attractions like Powis Castle in Welshpool.

Booked in for an early start for business in Welshpool following day.The Lion is a small but charming very old coach house type hotel, with authentic old beams and features. The room was reasonably well appointed and warm. The dressing table was very small and the only surface available to do some paperwork, just about managed! The bathroom was also warm and clean, though the power shower was not exactly powerful. The bed was very comfortable, and the view from the window looking over the local church and graveyard was serene if a little foreboding. The service was very friendly and the breakfast excellent. I did not use the restaurant but the menu and facilities looked inviting.

Booked here for our Anniversary dinner when couldn't get in at our first choice and so very glad that we did. Lovely cosy traditional pub with a pretty restaurant - so nice to see crisp white table linen and proper table settings.

We enjoyed an excellent 4 course meal at a very reasonable cost, and the service was friendly and attentive.

This will certainly become a regular haunt in future.
