Beggars Reach Hotel

Reviewed March 20, 2012

We recently stayed at the Beggars Reach Hotel situated just outside the Pembrokeshire village of Burton.

The hotel is well signposted which is a good job because it is a bit of a hidden gem. There is more than adequate easy parking around the hotel. The position is very countryfied and considerable care is taken of the grounds.

We received a warm welcome though we were not shown to our room. The room was well appointed with ensuite containing a bath and shower. Tea and coffee making facilities were available as was free wifi.

The Hotel has two very large dining areas and a smaller one reserved, it seemed, for breakfasts.

Everywhere was spotlesly clean and the staff very friendly.

Being well out in the Pembrokeshire countryside the hotel is in a very quiet position and the only sound likely to be heard is that offered by birds or wild animals. Wonderful.

There was an extensive manu available for dinner. We did, however, think that there is room for improvement in the quality of the food. While perfectly edible and tasty it tended to be quantity over quality, with the exception of breakfast, which was particularly good.

In simple terms we would certainly return to The Beggars Reach if and when we find ourselves in the area.

Room Tip: There are what appear to be two annexes. Maybe better in one of those on busy Saturday nights. The h...

Room was nice and breakfast okay. No atmosphere in the bar. Staff are nice enough. If you get a good rate it would be okay staying here. If you pay top whack you will be disappointed.

Food was extremely salty and two of us ended up feeling very sick after the meal and very poorly tummies for a couple of days. Would Not recommend to a friend.

Dream setting, lovely grounds. At the entrance of hotel smell of bad drains. Very come day go day welcome. Absolutely no atmosphere in the room allocated for the wedding reception. No warmth, no atmosphere, for the price I think they need the Hotel Inspector in to give out some much needed tips.

Went to the Beggars reach earlier this year, seriously overpriced considering the location, looks like its set in an old quarry with stone chip landscaping, to be fair they look like they have tried with the outside but might be sometime before its finished - unlike the inside, reception really quite nice toilets smelly and dirty, food so-so but really over priced. Manager was very rude to our party when we complained about the state of the facilities, never again.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else, plenty of other hotels with better locations close by

Be aware that if you book a ground floor room at Beggars it will not be in the hotel but a fair way away down quite a steep incline. Also the ramp for the disabled toilet in the hotel is actually kept in the toilet so will have to be requested the toilet being accessed down a very large step impossible to negotiate with a wheelchair.

Recently stayed at Beggars Reach for a two night stay, overall our stay was nice but generally average. It was by no means bad but it was not overly great... Reception never seemed to be staffed and we were left waiting on a number of occasions for what appeared to be the bar staff to come and see to us. It was also very difficult to see pass the lack of a consistent uniform, this seems like a minor issue but to be welcomed down to breakfast by someone who appeared to simply be another guest and to have other staff not wearing a tie or formal uniform was not projecting a good image for the hotel.

The hotel was very clean and clearly in the process of much development, something we were not told when making our booking (many mornings involved us listening to the banging of builders... not too early but either way it wasn't great to wake up to). The food was ok but let down by little niggles such as on one night there being no brown bread, we were never asked if our food was ok and if we needed anything else and the puddings were not the greatest for hotel specialising in weddings.

Overall the stay was pleasant, the rooms were tiered but adequate and the setting and location was perfect. I think with a bit more work to both the structure and the team this could become a vastly improved hotel. We look forward to visiting again to see the improvements that are being made.
