“Ok for one night”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

Neath is an honest kind of place without any pretence much like the Castle Hotel. The hotel interior is beautiful with lovely timber-work. Reception procedure was excellent but otherwise PR was patchy. The bathroom was big, really big. Two nightclubs operating nearby could not be heard in the bedroom- 5 stars for that surely. Breakfast was limited to put it mildly. For a night stay this venue is ok but for a long stay I would have to look further.

On Saturday 26th January 2013 we stayed at the Bluebell nearby which was nice and clean with very friendly staff but a bit impersonal and cold so we wandered down to The Castle and found the lounge to be warm, cosy and very comfortable. We stayed there for several hours and were looked after extremely well for most of the day by the barman (I think it was Liam). Even when inundated suddenly by a large party, it was amazing to watch him and the young girl work so well together as a team to get everyone served. I have to say though that the food wasn't as nice as it sounded. The cold toasted club sandwich wasn't pleasant. All in all though this would have been a better choice for our overnight stay.

The hotel is located very much in the bustling centre of Neath. When I say 'bustling' what I mean is gangs of the local Neath chavs haning around the streets near the pubs and takeaways. As it is located in the main street the car park is located about 50 metres away. this is a secure car park, so I entered only to find it full.. Oh well park it on the main street and pray that the Neath chavs don't fancy hijacking an audi..

The hotel itself is very fetching - very old traditional building - apparently a lot of burly welsh men huddled around the Castle Hotel got very drunk and decided to form the Welsh rugby union, so it is steeped in history. The receptionist was very nice (and very shocked that the car park was full - seems opportunist parking is the theme here..)

My room was quite pleasant if a bit 'worn'.. Unfortunately it was freezing and the radiator was not working. As I picked up the phone I noticed a strategically placed fan heater which did the job after half an hour of warming the place up.

The bar was quite busy - it appears the hotel is the choice of all rigger booted contractors invading across the border. The barman seemed to have had a surgically placed grimace and smiling appeared to be not in his human make up. I asked for the menu to be shown a limited chef special board. I chose the Welsh ham and eggs - apparently i was told through the grimace that this was ham and eggs with erm..chips and peas.. Ok for £5.50 I'll have it.. It was quite nice, but then I saw one of the regulars holding a huge menu card with copious amounts of choice...Bah!!!

Breakfast was ok - a fairly predictable full english with fried bread (yuk) and cheap sasuage yuk) but acceptable.

Other positives - super fast wifi (I downloaded 3 movies in a short while - naughty me !) Nice power shower.

Generally I cant really complain - particularly for the price of £39 + breakfast.

Other positives -

We chose this beautiful and traditional location for our October wedding. We had the best day of our lives. Thanks to the staff everything ran according to plan. They were more than accomodating with any requests we had. The carvery for the wedding breakfast was faultless, as was the buffet in the night. We would definatley recommend The Castle Hotel for a wedding.

We both live and work in Neath and we have often used the venue to meet up for lunch. Previously we would have described the hotel as avearge but our last visit left us really disappointed. My partner arrived before me and ordered the meal and drinks, she waited a good [or bad] 20 mins to be served at the bar. Two coffees ordered and only one arrived, the staff had to be prompted to deliver the 2nd. When the meal arrived it did so minus the side order of chips that incidentaly were only ordered to meet the minimum £10 card fee. The Chips never arrived but the bill for them did! after some 'to doo' we had a refund. Struck us as though the staff were inexperienced and didnt know what they were doing. Bad news for the Castle if the locals are not happy - dont you think?
