“Birthday celebration disappointment”
Reviewed June 24, 2010

We stayed at The Bell to celebrate my wife's birthday. The Inn is set in peaceful countryside by the side of a river and it is all very pretty. It is not cheap, our B&B deal was £170 and there does not appear to be any "special offers". Our room was spacious, well equipped, overlooked the river and was comfortable. Welsh breakfast was fine. Our disappointment came from dinner. The restaurant was very quiet (max of 7 people) so it lacked atmosphere. The meal was very much "nouvelle cuisine" 3 scallops for £9:50 and sirloin of beef @ £18:50 which consisted of approx 6 thin slices of beef approx 2 inches by 1. However, the worst experience was my wife's Welsh lamb which was tough and chewy and although my wife was offered alternatives by that time the moment had gone. In the end we were not charged for the lamb. We were also annoyed by flies in the restaurant, attempting to land on the food. Staff said they sprayed but that's what you get being near a river (?).

They try very hard or make an effort to make there their place better than most it shows but like most places it needs tweaking,
Wouldn't say it was a warm friendly welcome more mild panic as they weren't ready for us,
Bedroom corridor was cream walls with doors same color and no door numbers instead box framed display caes with individually different flies with names of your room - different,
We had the room above the kitchen with an amazing walk in shower, after a nice lunch we had a snooze followed by a room change ! Unless you are hard of hearing or have ear plugs the fridge noise will drive you nuts, shame though we never had a chance to try out that shower :(
Mattress toppers would be an idea my partner had spring marks across his shoulders in the morning
We were given a bottle of champagne as a gift from friends so we too that with us to enjoy on our stay - be warned they charge £15 corkage so we took it home.
Dinner B&B £210 without drinks

We have tried to get into The Bell a few times and always been unsuccessful. However, we managed to secure 3 nights in Little Marryat room in Early June and are delighted we did. The Bell has had some mixed reviews on TA over the past year or so, although we didn't experience any of the problems apparently encountered by some others.

The service, from the point of check-in, was friendly and efficient, be it in the bar or restaurant or from the cleaning or reception staff. The hotel sets itself a challenging target of making up your room whilst you have breakfast - and they succeed!

The food, although on the expensive side (dinner with a reasonable bottle of wine for 2 people will come to about £100), is fantastic, with a great blend of fish (Cod and gurnard when we were there), meat and vegetarian dishes, beautifully presented. However, this is a wonderful place for wine lovers with an extensive and unusual wine list to satisfy all tastes. There are other nice touches that one would expect of a nice restaurant including the chance to read menus in the lounge whilst enjoying innovative canapes.

The room, although the cheapest the hotel has, was very pleasant with views from the front of the hotel (if I were returning, I would go for a room at the back for hillside views). The room was a reasonable size with a nice ensuite and good shower (Very important!). Whilst not a fan of carpet in the bathroom, it is a minor gripe!

The hotel is very remote, beautifully appointed and there is a range of good walks from 1.5-6 miles that are recommended by the hotel. Whilst remote, it is not too long a drive to main towns (about 20 minutes to Monmouth, a little further to Ross). We were happy to stay in and around the hotel.

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys fine wine and food and an outdoors break, walking in the hills.

Having heard how good the Bell restaurant was meant to be we rang 4 weeks ahead of the May bank holiday Saturday to book a table for 4 at 8pm.
The following Saturday after booking we get a voicemail at 8.30pm asking if we would be coming tonight? Confused as they had booked us in for the wrong Saturday.
So we sent them an email trying to book a table for the bank holiday Saturday so they would be no confusion as this would be in writing.
We received no confirmation of our booking so assumed that they were full.
come the bank holiday saturday, having booked another restaurant we receive a call from the Bell at 9pm asking where we were?????
Clearly they have a major issue with how they handle their reservations and have lost our business and probably other business due to this!

We first stayed at this hotel in 2006 when we had a lovely time and everything was good except for the bed - two single beds joined together with a very uncomfortable zip. Not good for cuddles!
We have been back a number of times for drinks/lunch and have had different experiences depending on the staff. Some have been lovely and some have treated me as if I'm something they have scraped off the floor!
The food has always been excellent and the actual buliding is a delight.

We've been visiting the Bell since they opened. In the early days they were excellent, but unfortunately on each visit they have gotten worse. On arrival for lunch today the place was empty, we we waited a while until eventually one of the owners showed up, no polite greeting from him, seemed a bit miffed he had customers.
I ordered smoked salmon layered on rye bread with lemon creme fraiche hand cut chips and leaves.

What I got was shop bought salmon in stale brown bread buttered with a disgusting cheese spread, potato wedges that tasted liked they were cooked at least a week ago and some dirty lettuce leaves. The one star is for the jug of water on the table.

No longer will I put my husband through the torture of sitting on their uncomfortable chairs again. We will not be back.

Went for lunch based on several recommendations, the building and ambiance were beautiful.

The lunch was so disappointing average ingredients small portions and excessive prices, we had the impression the owners were testing the diners to see how much they could be fleeced for.

On paying we pointed out our feelings and the bill was reduced by a significant amount with little trouble, a sign that we weren't the first will not be going back.
