“Overpriced small portions”
Reviewed March 1, 2010

Went for lunch based on several recommendations, the building and ambiance were beautiful.

The lunch was so disappointing average ingredients small portions and excessive prices, we had the impression the owners were testing the diners to see how much they could be fleeced for.

On paying we pointed out our feelings and the bill was reduced by a significant amount with little trouble, a sign that we weren't the first will not be going back.

This is our fifth stay at the Bell, three of which have been this year.

The rooms are very comfortable and all very different. Some are quieter than others so if you are a light sleeper you may want to ask for a recommendation - none are noisy but you can hear footfall from above in some rooms.

The setting is perfect - easily accessible - we visited once during the worst of the snow but still found it easy to drive there - and in a really beautiful setting with lots of good walking right from the door. The Bell have a series of walks from the pub with good and detailed directions - we have done three of them and they were very enjoyable.

The food is very good too - just what you need after the walks!

A great place to stay for a relaxing weekend.

I visited the pub which is well reknowned to be asked would i like food and drinks, only to be told somewhat sanctimoniously that there were no tables. I would expect a much more courteous approach and be told that there was no food availiability and would i like to stay for drinks. I am very disappointed to be spoken to in this way.

We were travelling on the road and saw The Bell. It looks nice from out side but on entering were greeted with many tables groaning from dirty glasses. This was completely off putting.
The barman made up for it with his manner. But obviously there is no control over staff.

Stayed here for 2 nights (Fri and Sat). Saw rate on Laterooms.com and rang Hotel direct to ensure i got nice room. They gave me a good rate on their premier room (Heckam Peckham). This room (also number 11) has a huge King sized bed ... not easy to get into due to its height but well worth the jump as it is extremely comfortable. The bathroom is upstairs which is novel. It has a lovely freestanding Bath and a separate shower. Only downside of room was that it had two large double windows facing out the front of the hotel. This allowed for nice views of the river but there was also a road there which meant a lack or privacy as it is a popular walking area.

We did have a problem with no hot water on the first morning. The heating was on (thanlfully) as it was very cold out but no hot water. This was fixed later in the day so we were able to have amuch needed wash after some hiking in the hills. We received a complimentary glass of champagne before dfinner that night as an apology as we did complain.

The food was excellent though maybe a little too fussy. It is very much high-end dining rather than coutry pub food. The Friday night was very busy with many locals in there also which is always a good sign. Breakfast was excellent and a full choice of hot food (cooked to order) and cold buffet table.

Had a nose round some other rooms whilst there and they were all beautifully furnished with great bathrooms. I would defintely syay there again as it is located in a lovely peacuful area just into Wales and have some fabulous walks around it.

We have just returned from a two night stay at The Bell, for our Silver Wedding Anniversary. We had stayed once before a couple of years ago and had enjoyed it so much, that we decided to return for this special occassion. As before we found it the perfect place to relax. The staff were all so friendly and attentive. The room, which was an upgrade,( a lovely surprise), was wonderful with beautiful views over the surrounding countryside,a gorgeous bedroom and bathroom with every ammenity provided. The meals were excellent, with a very extensive wine list to choose from. We can not give enough praise to the staff for making our stay so enjoyable and memorable. I am sure we shall be back again soon.

My husband and I have just returned from a two day break at the Bell to celebrate his birthday. We were delighted by all aspects of our stay. When we arrived we were greeted by the receptionist who was more than helpful. As it was a quiet period we were upgraded from the room we had selected to Whickham's Fancy, a four poster suite with bath and shower which overlooked the river. It was extremely comfortable and well-equipped and was particularly suitable for us as we had our two dogs with us. Dogs are allowed in the room, bar and garden but have to be put in the car when you go for meals.
We were fortunate that the weather was good while we were there so we managed quite a few of the walks from the hotel. The only problem was that the walks included lots of stiles and as one of our dogs is nearly 13, my husband had to lift him over most of them. Although not the fault of the hotel, there was a distinct absence of rubbish bins in the village, which was a particular problem for dog waste.

The hotel is in an idyllic setting, with a well-kept garden to the rear and the river Monnow in front. We found the food excellent on both evenings and breakfast was very relaxed and tastefully presented. We also had a late lunch in he garden. The staff were efficient and friendly at all times. We are already planning our next visit for November and are taking some friends with us.
