My hubby and I visited SCYC the first week of April 2013, our first but not last trip to Staniel! I am officially obsessed and have already booked our second trip.
We are used to more commercial locations and larger resorts but I feel no need to ever go anywhere else than Staniel from here out!

We stayed 6 nights in the Blue Cottage which was clean, comfy and an unbelievable view. The water below our deck always had fish, sharks and rays swimming below with beautiful sunsets in the evening. Oh, one recommendation…if you like to sleep past 7:30 in the morning, bring earplugs!! There are birds that rise and shine around that time and they are the noisiest birds I have ever heard. We loved them and didn’t want to waste any time getting onto our boat, so we welcomed their screeches.

The boat is key! Don’t be scared to get in and go! I was a bit worried at first we would get lost but it is SO easy to get around and the boat is so easy to use that within the first 30 minutes we were pros! Enjoy the beaches, they are magical! We would park on a beach snorkel the rocks around and saw some of the prettiest fish and colorful coral. You have to snorkel Thunderball Grotto period.

The staff was very accommodating and friendly. They even help me find a piece of missing clothing they got mixed up in the laundry. Super people and always happy to help. The food was great and I still miss that Mango Shrimp I had for lunch a few times. We enjoyed every dinner and the bar atmosphere before and after the dinner bell.

I cannot say enough great things about SCYC and the island of Staniel Cay. Go and enjoy it for yourself, I am positive you will want to go back again and again!

What a wonderful experience! After a long trip from the West coast, we were ready for some relaxation. It was amazing! We did the all inclusive plan and highly recommend it. It came with meals, boat, paddleboards, kayaks, bikes and more. We were in the Orange cottage right on the water and it was perfect. Newly remodeled, all the cottages are in great shape! First things first....the food is amazing! Truly better than we expected and we were very pleased with the service. The wait staff was friendly, kind and very prompt. We had the lobster, steak, rack of lamb, bbq ribs, fish of the day, lobster salad, conch po'boys, and more....everything was spectacular! My favorite part of dinner was the soup course. They truly have great food! The service was super fast!

Breakfasts were always great! Their fruit plate is wonderful. It all is! After breakfast they would ask us if we wanted the picnic lunch to take with us. Usually we said yes and would take the boat out everyday to find our little slice of heaven for the day. Lunches were sandwiches, fruit cups, and sodas or water.

SIDE NOTE: head up to the 'Blue Store' to grab water...they sell bottled water for a buck a bottle and you can pick up a 24 pack to take back to your room so you can load your coolers and stay hydrated! You need it!

The days would wrap up about 4:30 when the boats had to be back and we would catch up with other guests and friends that we made, usually that happened when we were all rinsing our snorkel gear and salt water off and hanging in the pool, then head back to the room to get ready for dinner. Go up to the bar about 6 for great photo ops of the sunset and yachts! The dinner bell rang at 7:30. After dinner we hung around and watched the stars, chatting with new friends and had a couple of drinks.

We'd head back to room and crash for the night. If you are looking for nightlife, this is not the place. If you want to be connected to the internet/phone/tv/radio...probably not for you. You can get internet...it's slow and spotty, there is a t.v. in the bar, but you pretty much catch up with the world in the morning at breakfast and then again in the afternoon before dinner. You escape it for the rest of your stay....it's blissful.

Overall the staff is amazing, loved every single one of them. The celebs and big yachts that come in are fun to see and they appreciate it if you don't take pics and freak out around them...hey, they are on vacation too.

To us, the staff were the celebrities. The heartbeat of the yacht club. The ones that put the huge smiles on our faces every morning when we'd come in for breakfast..the daily hugs and the tears shed when leaving. Truly sweet, generous, kind people. Be sure to seek out Ruth and her wonderful handbags that her and her family make...they are a wonderful piece of heaven to take home and are reasonably priced!

We can't wait til we come back to SCYC. It's the perfect little slice of heaven that we'd been looking for with so much to see. I only hope this little gem is not discovered and remains a secret...it's perfect!

***Side note: when feeding the pigs at Big Major Cay, be careful! We brought our boat in to the shallows where the pigs could stand. One of the bigger brown/black spotted ones got a little pushy and bit me on the arm 2x. Not huge bites, but they bruised well. Always keep the pigs swimming so they can't stand on their hind legs and get into the boat. This one was up to his belly in our boat going for the food. Do not get out of your boat with food. You will probably get chased. Parents be very careful. They are fun to see and a kick to watch, but now that we know....we won't be going so close to shore in the boat to feed them. Do not feed them by hand. Of course we do not hold SCYC responsible for anything that happened, and it became more of a funny story we could tell at the bar when asked about the bruise that ironically was in the shape of a pig's head on my forearm. :)

Highly recommend this place, the journey there is worth it. I read a quote that describes SCYC perfectly "This place is not for 'Tourists' - it's a place for 'Travelers'"

Not a budget holiday but in line with Bahamian prices. Absolute pristine surroundings- be sure to check out snorkeling at Grotto Cay, swimming pigs of Big Major spot.
Things work in Bahamian time, so set your expectations accordingly.
People are very friendly-- will go back when the opportunity again arises.

If your looking for great scuba diving, snorkeling or fishing this is the place to go. No TV or Radio in the cottage but if you have to have contact with the outside world the bar is open! Food was good overall, the service was sometimes spotty but everyone was very friendly. We had the all inclusive package so we had a 13' whaler to use, had a few problems with it but they were addressed eventually. As for the bikes, we were going to go on a bike ride around the island and could not find but one bike that was usable. We ended up walking to the general stores and to one of the shops, island is not that large. We were able to have picnic lunches on island beaches that were empty except for us which was great. Overall everything was great, the iguanas and swimming pigs were great photo ops. Our cottage (Blue) was right on the water and we had a beautiful view from our deck.

Five nights with our adult family in the Coral Cottage at Staniel Cay was very memorable (if you're wondering, yes, that's my mom who wrote a review about the same stay; I've tried to hit on some other aspects). The cottage was ‘beachy’ casual and had what you needed, including very hot showers (3 full baths), comfortable beds, 2 fridges to store drinks and a view of the pool (which was actually pretty nice for a swim at the end of each day!) In our cottage, everything was clean and seemed freshly painted. While we would’ve loved a view over the water, this was the only cottage that could accommodate five adults.

Food was better than expected and drinks aren’t expensive ($4 beer, $9 rum punch + 15%) but service is slow, sometimes painfully so (even for island time!) We were on the meal plan and would often order 3 of the lunches to go (big sandwiches and we’d share), then come back around 4:00 and order conch fritters, etc. at the bar (which they would count as our other 2 meals so there would be no extra charge).

The boats are beat up, but are great fun and the maps are easy to follow. We do wish that we would’ve taken a day to rent a bigger boat and go up to the Exuma Park – next time I guess. We bought beach chairs in Ft Lauderdale and flew over with them so we would have chairs to sit on at the beaches – it would be great if they’d start to provide these. (They give umbrellas but no chairs.)

The only thing that left a bad taste in my mouth about the whole trip was at the end. We flew on Watermakers (which has the same owner as SCYC) and as requested, we told the pilot we would need a taxi when we landed back in Ft Lauderdale. They ordered us a town car, which ended up costing $65 dollars to get to the main airport (we had only paid about $35 on the way in with a yellow cab). Turns out they have a partnership with the town car company, but I thought this was pretty presumptuous on their part.

Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed the laid back vibe of the property, exploring the beautiful waters and beaches and feeling just a little like a yachtie! We would definitely return.

A few tips:
1. We paid by personal check to avoid the 5% credit card fee and they were fine with it.
2. The tide times for Thunderball Grotto are relative - we thought we had to be there exactly at low tide, but we were there a couple hours later and could still get in to the grotto no problem
3. Pack plenty of sunscreen - we travel to the Caribbean a lot but you seem to be out in the elements more so on this trip than others. We also wore rash guards with SPF pretty frequently to avoid getting completely fried!

Stayed 5 nights in periwinkle with the all inclusive deal, had some reservations going in for 2 reasons, one this is a totally different style of vacation than we have done in the past, though we have been gravitating more and more towards the less commercialized side of things, the second reason is a couple of bad reviews on here. I can't imagine what the few bad reviews were complaining about. All i can surmise is some people will complain about anything. Needless to say our stay far exceeded our expectations. The best surprise was the attitude of the staff and the locals. Compared to the two other Caribbean vacations we have been on (St John and Grand Caimen). This aspect was a major improvement. SCYC just has this Caribbean coolness to it. From the bikes, to the whalers, to the yachts coming and going, it is truly an experience. Food was really good. Lanes limo was great as was the watermaker's air trip over to the island. The only way you will be disappointed is if you are misinformed about what to expect. If you like room service and to be pampered, then go to a sandals resort, but if a map and a whaler with countless islands to explore sound like an adventure, then go for it! We will be back for sure.

I LOVED this place. I can't say it enough and express it enough to make it understood. But I am a traveler, and not a tourist so I have a different level of experience and acceptance of my vacation choices. A traveler will gladly compromise speedy service and 5 star dining for a place that is unique and so fantastic that there aren't enough hours in a day. A tourist will complain if service is slow or the steak they ordered in a place surrounded by an ocean full of fresh fish takes longer than they wanted. Tourists will budget vacation yet expect and demand 5 star services. Tourists will forget about where they are and instead focus on the money spent.

Staniel Cay Yacht Club is for travelers, period. The rooms are small but very comfortable. I stayed in the Sea Glass cottage which is a brand new hillside cottage with a very nice king bed and great a/c that kept it very nice and cool. The view was of a tremendous blue ocean and yachts that were incredible. The food was good enough, nothing special but certainly good enough. We got a 17 ft boat included with our room that we used every day. It even included the gas which was nice. We did the all-inclusive package which I highly recommend because food in the Bahamas is not cheap and it's so much easier to not have to worry about it.

The staff is amazing. Leera and Nettie were awesome from the minute we flew in and took great care of us right up til the day we left. We made many new friends and I am already planning my return.

if you are a traveler, then by all means you must visit this amazing place. But if you're someone who will scrutinize every penny spent and expect a luxury resort then this place is NOT for you and you'll ruin it for those of us who are travelers. Stick to going to Vegas and leave the exotic destinations to us. Please!

Room Tip: choose one of the new cottages like sea glass or coco plum. also make sure you do the all-inclusive
