Staniel Cay Cottages
Reviewed September 12, 2011

My husband and I stayed in one of the cottages at Staniel Cay in early May 2011. The cottages are small, but comfortable for a few nights. The view from the porch over the water was fantastic. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was also good. A very relaxing place to go if you want to kick back for a few days.

My husband and I stayed in one of the cottages, Shipwrecked, over Thanksgiving this past year and fell in love with our gorgeous surroundings, gracious hosts, and welcoming residents. Each cabin is handpainted with a unique mural theme by owner and local artist Bernadette Chamberlain; ours had a deserted beach panoramic scene and featured satellite TV and a small but fully-functional kitchenette. The room was tidy and welcoming and had a gorgeous sound side view of the beach below and ocean; Bernadette and her husband, John, couldn't have been more accomodating, making us feel relaxed and at home from the get-go, they are a wonderful couple who are warm and helpful but not overbearing, and give great advice on what to do in area.
There is much to do on and around the island, and I am still amazed at how many breathtaking spots we saw without even leaving the cozy 3x1/2 mile island. Enjoy some fabulous snorkeling, for example- check out Thunderball Grotto or the sea garden off Ho Tai beach, then finish the day out with a Kalik (local beer- the best!) and some cracked conch at the newly-added bar in the back of John and Bernadette's cafe/art gallery (just a beach walk away from the cottages) while local resident enjoy a lively game of dominoes on the porch and the caribbean sun sinks slowly into the sea.
This was the perfect place for a more laid-back, off-the-beaten-path vacation; the charming cottages and generous hospitality were the ' icing on the cake' of our Bahama experience!

My husband and I just went down to Staniel Cay planning on staying a few nights, after visiting Harbour Island. We cut the trip short after just 1 night.
The cottage we stayed in was dirty and not kept up with at all.The chair cushions were stained, curtains faded from the sun and the furniture , odds and ends. The main floor had crumbs from the last guest. The bathroom floor had hairs on the tiles. The sheets felt gritty with sand but it was late by the time we went to bed we just dismissed it.However upon waking in the morning and getting out of bed we discoverd there was a good size yellow disgusting stain on my side of the bed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!We let management know about that .She said she would look into it.Whatever that means.
Do not let the brightly painted pastel exterior of the cottages fool you!

The only positives-----Yes you are on the water but so are many other accomodations in the Bahamas.
The food in the restaurant was decent.
Happy Travels..

Because there were no previous reviews, I booked our stay on a whim based on the Staniel Cay Cottages' website. We loved it so much that we are returning in Feb 09 - and we travel rarely - and on a fixed budget. My husband and I were hooked by the friendly reception and easy candor offered us when we got off the plane from Nassau. The 'airport' is a runway with a bus-stop shelter and great little deli. We were met by a lovely lady who drove us to our destination in a golf cart, the main mode of transport. We knew we were in for a treat when we went through the round-about that is laid out in white stones in the shape of a heart - it's a "heart-about".
The cottage we stayed in is called 'Shipwrecked' - painted by Bernadette Chamberlain (as are all the cottages in unique themes - check out her gallery, she's an amazing artist) and we awoke each morning to being 'marooned on a paradise island' - but then, Staniel Cay is just that.
John and Bernadette Chamberlain are wonderful hosts - very conscious of privacy but very attentive should anyone need anything - which you won't because the cottages are equipped with everything you might ever need and more. The accommodation was wonderful, the view fantastic. We have no problem with stairs and several of the cottages have few, but you may want to plan carefully if you need handicapped access. Both my husband and I loved our stay here and recommend it to anyone wanting to be self-sufficient in a cottage in the Exumas.
