Sandals Emerald Bay Golf, Tennis and Spa Resort
Ranked #2 of 6 Hotels in Great Exuma
Reviewed April 13, 2010

What luck we found this resort via aircanadavacations. From the moment you step on terra firma in George Town till you leave, the gracious Sandals Emerald Bay staff make it memorable. Spacious, comfortable and clean rooms with view of bay/ocean from third floor. A la carte restaurants with top quality food that left you satisfied, not stuffed. Cooling breeze blowing in, pristine white beach with crystal clear emerald and blue water made time on the beach a joy especially without any crowds.

We luck-in by being there during the 17th annual reunion week and took part in the festivities including a special beach lunch at Exuma Bay (with the best Conch salad made right there), a bus excursion to Little Exuma, a gala evening that just can't be beat.

Fortunately as Sandals Emerald Bay opened recently, the occupancy seemed to be around 65% - deliberately so as to give the management time to get the kinks out, and there were a few but none of them unforgivable and all but forgotten now.

Angela and Rebecca made you feel like you were visiting their home. Darrion and Logesh - our butlers for the week - were top notch. Mark, our waiter one evening and for breakfast the next, gave professional service with a smile and a care. Stepping in to help from the T&C was Dave (or David - he had two name tags it seemed) who made sure restaurant service ran smoothly and listened attentively to our comments and suggestions. Colin, one of the executive chefs, took time to chat and see how we were enjoying ourselves - a pleasant thing we haven't experienced this nicely before. A lot more staff we'd mention, but we'll keep it for the Sandals survey...

Clearly a star property for Sandals, one that will be sought after by vacationers especially with the commitment we've seen from John (the manager) and his staff.

It's a seven star site compared to other five star all-inclusives.

Sandals Emerald Bay is absolutely gorgeous and beach is stunning!

Upon arrival all guests are greeted by their butler and given a cell phone for beckoning their butler for their every whim!

All rooms have whirlpool tubs, flat screen TVs, in room bar, stocked mini fridge and coffee maker. In Room safe is electronic. Lots of closet space and its light automatically illuminates when you open the doors!

Has the signature Sandals Main pool with swim up pool bar with plenty of loungers and cabanas. Quiet pool has the same, just no music being played.

Grounds/gardens immaculately kept and the flora is beautiful.

Was pretty breezy most of the time; not many on the beach sunning, just walking. Beach is beautiful, soft white sand the texture of finely ground salt. Becah Cabanas/Beds are to be installed before end of April. Most spent time at one of the pools. Hot tubs very nice!

Pizza is very good here and made to order... I tried the Calzone and it was delish!

Breakfast Buffet had fairly standard fare. Lunch was offered in Barefoot by the Sea - wood tables with bench seating and tons of house flies!

Dinner Reservations not required but can be made by your butler. Tuesday night is the Chocolate Buffet. On; Wednesday night, Sandals offers a complimentry excursion to the local Fish Fry for an evening out - food and local entertainment with transfers... reservations are required as space is limited.

Greg Norman designed PGA Golf Course on property is NOT included... USD175 per person includes cart, green fees and caddy. YIKES - they want to keep hackers off the pristine course!

No evening shows just a steel drum band or local musicians performing in the Bandstand area just off the main pool. There is a piano bar (no karaoke or sing along) located off the lobby area.

The Drunken Duck English Pub was a nice venue - they also offer food service; separate billiard and pool table room with mutil-TV screens was very nice. Various board games are available for use here.

A great resort for those looking for a laid back getaway. Not much happening during the day and quiet evenings as well.

Champagne is offered absolutely everywhere and the house wine is Beringer which is all very good; there is also an extensive wine list from which to order and pay.

Be happy to answer any questions you might have.

My wife and I returned last night from a week at Sandals Emerald Bay. We have traveled to a few Caribbean Islands; Jamaica, Barbados, Antigua, St. Martin, St. Lucia as well as Bermuda and stayed at some very nice resorts but this was our first Sandals experience.
Sandals are exclusive to the Caribbean so should be considered experts in this part of the world. A Four Seasons resort property for seven years prior to Sandals adding it this year to their twenty-two locations in the Caribbean; it has 183 rooms facing the Atlantic Ocean including twelve beach fromt villas, two pools, four restaurants, a huge his and hers fully staffed spa including a fantastic gym and secluded outdoor garden patio with a small pool, heated jacuzzi and cold plunge pool. The resort also has several on site conference rooms a ballroom where I understand the returning guests party took place and a very nice shop selling resort wear and shoes; very important lest you forget
closed toed shoes for Il Cielo. Thank you Jaquylin. A jewelry store is nexrt door.
All of this is on a mile and a half long beach of pillowy white sand looking out over the azure blue ocean; a couple of small cays are visible in the distance.
Oh, I forgot, they also have their own on site marina where the dive centre is and a Gregg Norman designed eighteen hole links style championship golf course
This is one of the most remarkable and beautiful properties I have ever seen.
You are on the Atlantic side so often must contend with higher wind and surf than the Leeward side.
Great Exuma is basically a fourty mile long sand bar; I believe there are less than 1,000 permanent residents. We rented a car and drove to the southern tip of Little Exuma; about an hour. A stop at Santana's for lunch is a must. There isn't much to see other than the deserted and secluded beaches; Georgetown is a small settlement without a stop light. It's important to understand that this is part of the appeal of this island. It is clean and unspoiled. We didn't get up to Thunderball Grotto; one of the main attractions outside the resort. The bonefishing and deep sea fishing are also popular. Great Exuma is not famous for its scuba diving. A dive site map shows more locations North near Nassau or East close to Long Island or South; Turks and Caicos. More on this a bit later.
OK, back to the resort. Rooms are large and well appointed; we stayed on the third floor of bayhouse 1. Nice ocean view and close to the main building and restaurants.
With the exception of a long wait for lunch and a burger that reminded me of the old commercial "where's the beef " we had no unpleasant experiences at any of the restaurants. Baham Bay has a large cold buffet as well as the regular hot menu for breakfast and an antipasto bar as well as regular menu for dinner; Dinos wood oven pizza is attached and available noon to six only; pizza at night would be good also. Ruthlyn will keep you entertaiined on the patio The lobster and boursin cheese breakfast omelets at Il Cielo are delicious. Axel, the manager, maitre d', assistant chef and anything else that needs doing at Il Cielo will ensure you are well taken care of.
We thought the food and service was exceptional at the Barefoot by the Sea. Good selection of fresh seafood, chicken and salads, great burgers and an extensive lunch buffet on certain days Quick and lively service provided by Katera and Akeem. Insight to the Bahamas lifestyle was a much appreciated bonus.
I have to say the quality and level of service was very high at all venues.
A huge opening night buffet was part of our week. the rest of the time a la carte. If you aren't happy with the selection or portion size. order another course. The sky is the limit ; all inclusive means all inclusive; as much as you want.
We won't soon forget the eneregy and warmth of the staff.
The resort has some form of live music or audience participation entertainment each night;. If you're looking for vibant nightlife this isn't the place.
Lastly; i've gassed on quite enough; although not known for its scuba; I had one of the greatest experiences of my life on April 9th. Only two of us showed up to dive in the morning because of the party for returning guests the night before so the dive team decided we could visit a more remote site.
In fairly shallow water; about twenty-five feet around several coral heads we saw a huge lobster, a green sea turtle and a sting ray moving along the bottom and over the coral. I turned and two big grey forms flashed a couple of feet in front of my mask. They were dolphins; a mother and pup almost full grown. I couldn't believe it. They circled for what seemed like ten minutes; so close I could have touched them. The dive master signaled that I should keep my hands to my self because these are wild animals.
As we made our way to the boat they stayed with us; apparently enjoying the company. I was the last out of the water and they were still close by. Back on the boat we hooted and hollered and exchanged high fives. The thirty minute trip back to the marina was quiet; all of us basking in the glow of a unique experience.
Thank you to the Emerald Bay dive team; Leslie, Bancroft and Sammy the boat captain; they also have a number of support staff who do a great job. Their brand new Newton 47 foot dive boat isn't too shabby either.
The wind died down towards the end of our week so I had a chance to use one of the new 16 ft. Hobbie Cats, thanks to Stepan for the lesson and Nadia at the watersports centre for managing my dive schedule.
OK, one pet peve; not crazy about the piped in music (all the adult contemporary hits ffrom yesterday and today, including Rod Stewart and Reggea from 7;00 AM, 24/7 throughout the property).
All in all I would say a unique and exceptional self contained resort experence.

Having travelled extensively in the Caribbean one realizes that all the resorts have their beaches, pools, rooms and restaurants but not all have the quality of staff required to administer these resorts. Sandals have matched the beautiful mile long beach, PGA quality golf course, five star restaurants and lovely pools with superb staff.
I would to first like to thank the guest ambassador Maja, our butlers Paul and Sam, Donovan, head chef, the master of the cosmo, James, Robinlyn who should work for "Kalik" and the managers John and Cinzia who work tirelessly along with all those others not mentioned, who offer this extraordinary service to the guests. Once refurbishment is complete Emerald Bay will be the flagship of the Sandals resorts.

Overall, we were very pleased with our trip. The resort still has alot to work on, but the nice staff, the property and rooms, and the stunning beach made up for those growing pains. The staff were so pleasant and dealt with hitches very graciously. I loved our room, so spacious and clean and I think every room faces the ocean. Which is the most startling blue we've ever seen. In fact, we were in Fiji last summer and this beach rivals the ones over there! Softest sand ever!

A mild complaint was not enough restaurants and menu choices were a little limited, but in time it will be sorted out. The food we did have was very good and their seafood was amazing. There wasn't a whole lot of entertainment but their pub and games room were super fun. The staff there were great. Their water sports were limited but we did go kayaking which was great because the water was so clear. All features they are working on and no doubt will be up to par soon.

I enjoyed the spa amenities and my husband a round of golf - both great. My husband was impressed with the gym.

By far the biggest disappointment was our butler service...it was horrid. Some of our requests were blatantly ignored and we hardly saw him all week. Apparently they are short staffed and there are many in training. Our friends we went with had a veteran butler and so their experience was quite the opposite of ours. They were always being checked on and catered to so often it seemed! We are pretty self sufficient anyway, so we weren't too upset. But it would have been a nice feature to enhance our trip had it actually been what our friends had. Oh well, not the end of the world! I just think that Sandals made such a big deal of this first all-butler service that they should have made sure the process was running in top form before they opened. And we were not the only ones to have this experience.

One touch we loved was the turndown service with little goodies (like cheese platters, desserts, hot bubble bath) waiting for us upon our return from the beach. Great extra touches. And Sandals did give us a voucher for two free nights on our next vacation to one of their resorts. I think they appreciated our patience and you could tell they were really trying to let us know that.

Again, all in all we were quite pleased. I think this resort will be beyond fabulous in about a year. So if you are more easygoing and prepared for the glitches, its truly a beautiful, romantic place...but if your expectations are higher or if you've stayed in many Sandals before, you may be disappointed. My advice is wait a year and this resort will surpass everyone's expectations!

Had 75% occupancy while we were there and we had the beach to ouselves! The Butler service was awesome -took care of everything- set us up on the beach evryday with a cooler full of ice and whatever we wanted to drink! Food was awesome! Was there for 6 days, first time we wanted to extend our stay...usually we get tired of the sun and want to get back home....not this time. There wasn't much of a young crowd (under 30) ...many from Canada.......all was great!! All spoke english very well. Sat hello to Adrian and Sheldon...the best Butlers!!!

My wife and I stayed at Sandals Emerald Bay March 28-April 4, 2010.

Airport: Just so you know the Exuma airport is quite small, they seem to be still getting used to larger crowds arriving all at once but overall it was fine. You were greeted with smiles from everyone, a drum trio played and sang while we waited for our luggage and we cleared immmigration/customs quickly. Outside the arivals area we were met by sandals reps and efficiently and effectively sorted into taxi's (vans/SUV's) for the 15 min drive to the resort. Our luggage followed.

Resort arrival: Arriving at the resort was wonderful and one of the best reception experiences we've ever had. My wife is pregnant (which we advised them of beforehand) and we were met with smiles, handshakes, music, cool clothes and a cool drink. Very welcoming. We were very quickly intercepted by a butler whom took us immediately to our room with a brief tour on the way (no front desk contact at all upon arrival). The grounds and main pool area are likley the first things you will notice and they are wonderful.

Rooms: Unknowingly we had been upgragded to a one bedroom suite (2 bathrooms!). The room was well turned out, clean and funished with very modern LCD tv's, an expresso machine, great linens etc. and view of the ocean. Very nice. After a walk on the beach our first day however we decided to upgrage again to a beachfront villa and did not regret it. The room was a bit smaller (oh darn, only one bathroon) but we could walk out our ground floor patio onto the beach itself. This room was just as nice overall, the patio had a patio table with 2 chairs and two beach loungers so you could spend your vacation on your patio if you wished. The bathroom was large and very new, it had a soak tub, seperate shower, water closet and ample towels etc. Well done overall. Floors could have been a bit cleaner, we don't think the maid mopped them at all while we were there. Maid service is twice daily thugh which keeps towels refreshed and room tidy.

Butler service: Very interesting concept. We were skeptical on how much we'd use the service and only actually called our butlers a few times through the week (reservations/afternoon snack/drinks). You get a cell phone with pre programmed number to reach your assigned butlers. Shameer and Henri were very good. Each set of butlers is assigned a number of rooms. Our butlers had 6-9 rooms to service during the week. Inevitably some rooms will be more demanding than others. Even though we didn't iniate much contact with them they vigilantly checked in a few times each day to make sure all was well. They offered many times to fill our pool cooler with our choice of drinks, brought us menues from each restaurant to make a lunch choice...the list goes on and on. They truely take their job seriously at doing whatever is humanly possible to ensure you have a great vacation. They can/will spoil you rotten, which can be a nice thing on vacation. They will probably be able to look after pretty much any reasonble request you make, you just have to ask. We did not use them as our hands and legs (some did) so we did feel bad watching them run around some days trying to keep up with everyone's requests which likely explains some complaints about small delays in getting requests filled in a timely manner.

Food: Food and service overall was quite good. A few more restaurant choices would be nice but I understand they are working on this (Dine and Dip restaurant near coming soon?). Drunken Duck is great (pub grub), Bahama Bay has excellent choices, semi al la carte, good quality service and food. The pizza is yummy, the bare foot restaurant near the beach was OK (bit windy at times), italian restaurant was very good (make reservations as soon as possible so you get a day/time you want). Bar service everywhere was great, notably at the pool bar and italian restaurant piano holding bar. One night they held a late evening chocolate buffet and casio night out on the terrace area which ws excellent.

Fitness: The fitness center is very good. Ample cardio and weight options. It's clean and the staff are helpful and energetic. Rainford organizes a morning walk/stretch around the gold course which is a great way to start the day in an unbelieveable setting. We did not golf (it's not included, not many people played and is expensive)

SCUBA: The diving is good. All equipment is new along with the dive boat itself (boat is a top notch diving boat and accomodates approx 40 people but unlikely you'd get that many going at one time). If you're already certified it's free exept for the wetsuit rental ($10 US per dive). They will supply mask, snorkel, fins, weight belt and BC. If you're not they offer resort certification for around $90. They are always looking for better dive sites but I had a great time, seen loads of tropical fishies, lobster, moray eels, conches etc. Left with a good confidence in the dive staff.

Staff: Overall the staff are superb. They appear united in the goal to make sure you are having a great vacation and a first rate experience. They are eager to hear feedback (good and bad) and noticeably act on that inforamtion. We spoke a few times to the General Manager John in passing and he obviously takes his role seriously and it shows. His attention to detail shows his experience in this industry and he appears to be having good sucess passing it along to his staff. The staff are attentive and accomodating and what you would hope for in setting/price range.

Entertainment: This is limited, likely because of the resorts location. They had a band which played a few nights and a few contest nights but we found ourselves in our room quite early each night.

Beach/Pool/Grounds: Beach is beautiful. White powder sand. Usually a bit windy, loads of loungers always available. Water is warm, snorkelling a must. Main pool is a bit cool, hot tubs are a bit too hot (likely will be sorted out soon). We spend majority of time by the main pool and had a great time meeting new people. They have cabanas with coolers which your butler can fill with your preferred beveraged if you wish which is a nice touch. On clear nights they set up a high powered telescope by main pool to star gaze, it's a very nice touch. The quite pool is a short wak away, much warmer but you can hear a pin drop. Grounds are wonderful, always being tended to by staff and it shows. Speakers are hidden along walkways in faux rocks. The walk ways and grounds could be better lit at night.

Departure: Check out was simple. The airport departure is still a work in progress. Because of the small capacity for passangers at the airport it's a bit uncomfortable once there and waiting. Sandals does the best they can to ease this experience by making fresh fruit, sandwiches and cool drinks available prior to your departure from the resort. The staff make great efforts to see you off and again it's a nice touch.

Our reccomendation: Two thumbs up!! Wonderful experience for newlyweds, couples or anyone seeking some quite, relaxing, restful vacation time.
