“Golf”
Reviewed January 24, 2014

I just got back from a long needed stay in Exuma. Though I did not stay at Sandals Emerald Bay Resort, I did stay just down the way at another hotel (which will remain unnamed....). Anyway, I did get to golf at Sandals. The positives - the back 9 is absolutely spectacular. Hole 13 has to be one of the toughest 90 yards I have EVER played. I shot a 90.... which is REALLY good for me. The staff... the Golf Superintendent Bruce and one of the golf pros - Kevin were awesome and very friendly. There was another golf course staff on hole 1 - another Kevin, that was wonderful! So friendly. The not-so-positives.... the course. In a nutshell, it needs work. The tee boxes were soft and mushy, there were weeds everywhere on the tee boxes, and where there were not weeds, you can tell where they had been killed by the brown spots. Some greens were super hard (not watered) and others were soft and spongy. One had a massive amount of sand that was just laid down and not spread. The clubs.... I used a pretty old set of Tayor Made Burners. The bag was way sun bleached and faded, and the woods had seen better days (chipped and old). The grips were in good shape, and I played well - but for the price they charge to rent - one would think the clubs would be a wee but nicer. Also - I thought this was a Greg Norman course? Does he not play King Cobra? No biggie.

Overall it was a great experience, but it is apparent the course groundkeeper staff is under staffed or does not have the right equipment. Hats off to Kevin, Kevin, Bruce and Richard (I think that was his name - the new golf pro) for providing a fantastic and memorable experience.

We were at Sandals Emerald Bay from January 5-12, 2014. This resort is simply outstanding.

We arrived at the airport to be met by Sandals representatives with a cold bottle of water and very quick transport to the resort which is only a 15 minute ride from the airport. Upon arrival to the resort we were taken to the comfortable check-in lounge where hot towels and champagne were waiting for us. This process went very smoothly and was timely. We were lucky enough to have our room ready which we weren’t expecting with an early 12:30pm arrival to the resort so this was a very nice bonus.

As you come out of the lobby area into the outdoors the view from the lobby is breathtaking of the large pool area, beautiful landscaped gardens, and the turquoise blue of the ocean. Our room as well had a great view of the grounds and the ocean (5301). We had a king size bed, a small table w/chairs, comfy arm chair and lovely balcony with comfy deck chairs. The shutters were a nice addition to keep out the early morning sun so that we could sleep in a little. The washroom had a large tub, double vanity and separate shower and toilet room – the room and washroom was larger by most resort standards and very well maintained. It was lovely to have a fully stocked mini bar that included spirits, soft drinks, water, Beringer wines and also a bottle of champagne. The only small complaint I have about the room was that the bed seemed really hard but after a few days our bodies adjusted.

There are two pool areas. The large pool where there is a pool bar, lots of comfortable beach chairs, cabanas, sitting areas and I loved the large sofas right in the water. There was also one large hot tub and a smaller hot pool here. There were always employees walking around ready to take your drink or pizza order throughout the day. There was always fresh towels available as well. We split our time between the larger pool and the quiet pool where it is very peaceful, a bit smaller and has a bar as well. There is also a hot pool here. The pool areas were very well maintained and kept clean by the staff throughout the day. We never had an issue finding a chair/cabana to set up for the day.

There are tennis courts and other games on site – croquet, shuffleboard, table tennis, pool table which this trip we did not get a chance to use.

My husband loves the Hobie Cats and the kayaks and was able to get out a couple of times. The wind was quite high most days so it wasn’t often that the flag wasn’t red but the bay area that the hotel is on is beautiful for sailing and the watersports.

The beach area that this resort is located on is breathtaking. The sand was deep and like walking on very soft pillows. We have traveled all over the world and I don’t remember seeing water as beautiful a blue colour as it was here. It was nice that it was quiet and kept clean. Sand flies are around but I only got a few bites – not worth not enjoying this beautiful beach. It was great exercise to walk the beach from one end to the other.

Restaurants – Bahama Bay was the buffet restaurant but on certain nights they too offered ala carte. We found the food to be very fresh, delicious and just the right selection. We have been to all-inclusives where they cater to the masses and there is a lot of selection but everything tastes the same. With this buffet having a smaller selection the preparation and quality was excellent and the service was great.

Drunken Duck – we only ate here 1 night but for a pub type restaurant found the food to be great.

Barefoot by the Sea – always a favourite of ours when at the Sandals properties. Love being on the sand/near the beach and the food and service is great.

Dinos – Great pizza and the service again - great – every lunch hour there were servers walking around asking if we wanted to order a pizza for lunch.

Café de Paris – Love the option of waking up and that it was just a quick walk to get our favourite coffees. Also pastries and ice cream available.

Il Cielo – I had a ½ plate of the fettuccine and the penne for the main course. The penne was tasty but the fettuccine was not good at all - no taste to it. We didn't have a chance to return to try something different but heard great reviews from other guests. The desert bar was fantastic and the pastry chef made everything herself. The tiramissu was delicious!

La Parisienne – This was one of our favourite meals. I had the salmon and my husband had the filet and he said it was the best steak he had ever had. This is a huge compliment to the chef as we come from Canadian cattle country.

Sandals Select Dinner – what a lovely dinner and evening – we really enjoyed visiting with those we dined with at our table including the Sandals representatives. We hadn’t attended this when we traveled to St. Lucia after our 2nd Sandals trip but we certainly will from now on.

The entertainment in the evening was lovely. It generally started about 9pm and didn’t go too late into the night – perfect after being up early on the beach, in the sun – we usually were ready for bed before midnight. The only suggestion I have is despite in the piano bar the entertainer saying that the piano had just been tuned it certainly did not seem so….he was very interactive with the crowd though and we loved beginning and ending our evening in the piano bar. Sophia was a great bartender and the drinks were delicious!

The Friday night beach party was taken inside to the Junkaroo Lounge due to the windy weather but it was entertaining.

There isn’t many places to shop on the island but we found the Sandals gift shop had a little bit of everything you would want and the prices were reasonable.

We enjoyed a round of golf on Emerald Reef. The golf pro was great, very informative and the service was great. The back 9 is breathtaking along the ocean front – if you don’t golf try to go for a walk along the walking path that follows the golf course. Really worth it!

We rented a car for an afternoon from Island Routes to do a quick tour to Georgetown and down the main highway. It is very safe and easy to get around. We stopped for a delicious lobster lunch at Santana’s – great location and food!

Last but very important, the service from every member of the team at Sandals Emerald Bay was outstanding. There was not 1 employee that we passed while wondering around that did not initiate a hello – this included the maintenance workers. If we needed anything there was always someone nearby to assist with an answer to our question or to just check in with us to make sure our stay was excellent. We did not want for anything. I know that we will travel back to Emerald Bay, Great Exuma. It was heaven on earth! Well done!

We just finished a 7 night stay. The staff was attentive to our every need. The resort is beautifully manicured, and they work hard at it. The property is large so you never feel crowded. We never had any difficulty getting a lounge chair by either pool. The food is good and there are plenty of options to choose from. We had an oceanfront butler suite that was huge compared to other resorts, and we were provided whatever liquor we requested. We were able to secure tee times when we wanted and play by ourselves. The golf course is beautiful. The butlers are awesome: Vincent, Lakera, and Stephen (Butler Manager). If you do the 007 tour excursion, do a half day as the full day is a little long. I would be giving a 5 star rating if it weren't for the biting sand fleas that got me, but spared my husband. The resort supplies insect repellent.

Room Tip: Rooms near the main pool may be a little noisy if you ever want to go to bed earlier.

Thank you for your review.
We truly appreciate you taking the time to share a bit of your fantastic experience at Sandals Emerald Bay. We are thrilled that you had a lovely time exploring the resort and this beautiful island! We do continuously fog the resort to eliminate the sand fleas but during certain times, they can be more active in the area. We will of course continue our efforts to resolve this issue and hope that this does not deter you from visiting us in the future.
We look forward to welcoming you back!

we just returned yesterday from here . we had the beach front penthouse suite , our room was great , only a couple of concerns ,last year we have a big screen tv mounted on the wall this time it was small and on a table. we don't care about the size except we couldn't view it from the bed. we were celebrating our 20 th wedding anniversary and had a wonderful time. on our special day we enjoyed a bubble bath and champagne ! then for dinner we had booked a private candlelight dinner in the tower which was wonderful and romantic. our butlers were bernard and deepak they did a great job with all our request and were always available. just fyi if you take any excursion ask questions about food , we went on one for approx 5 hours took no money and did not have lunch provided ! we were starving when we got back. we had a spa appointment so we had no time to eat but our butler barnard came to the recuse with some sandwiches !the grounds crew does a great job everything is so beautiful ! steven the head butler was our personal butler last year and was so nice and always checked on us during this stay . we have already rebooked for next year ! we like to open our glass sliding doors to sleep so we can hear the ocean but this year we had no screens on our doors so this wasn't possible this year !! already looking forward to next year !

Room Tip: get a butler room it is well worth the extra price

On Dec. 22 we were awakened at 2 AM to the sound of freezing rain pelting down outside our Toronto hotel and we thought “oh-oh, are we going to make it out of here?” Luckily, we had an early morning flight and a small window of opportunity for take-off opened up and we were on our way to what was destined from day one to become our favourite of all the Sandals’ resorts we’ve visited.

The Georgetown airport and baggage handling procedures can only be described as quaint but surprisingly efficient. Customs and Immigration officers were very friendly and welcoming. Within 45 minutes we arrived at the impressive entrance to SEB. There we were greeted by a welcoming committee and quickly whisked away to the Club Lounge to complete our paperwork. While we filled in the required information, the concierge scurried off and returned with two Davids in tow. Mr. Latchimy(Resort Manager) and Mr. Kerr (Loyalty Manager) warmly welcomed us to the resort. David Kerr checked on our room status and then personally escorted us to our accommodation. On the way, he explained that he had taken the “liberty” of upgrading us due to our loyalty to the Sandals brand (diamond level) and the fact that we were celebrating our 30th Anniversary. Nevertheless, we were stunned to be led to an impeccable one-bedroom walkout level suite (2107) with a mesmerizing view of the turquoise sea. We felt truly spoiled and spent the afternoon relaxing and exploring our new “home away from home”.

We could fill a book with a detailed description of our experiences over the following 11 days but know that most TripAdvisor readers are looking for an overall synopsis from posted reviews, so we’ll get on with that:

Resort and Grounds: Beautiful, lush and meticulously maintained landscaping. Well spread out buildings lend a peaceful, tranquil setting for guest accommodations. Guests, depending on their mood or personal preference, can enjoy the choice of two pools, the more active main pool with the sea as backdrop or the “quiet” pool. Both locations offer bar service, cabanas and plentiful loungers.

Accommodations: The most comfortable bed, by far, of any resort we’ve visited. Quality white linens lend a crisp and fresh feel to the bedroom. Large bathrooms offer dual sinks, ample vanity space, soaker tub, a generously sized separate shower and enclosed water closet. Cleanliness and order are maintained by a housekeeping team who obviously take great pride in their work.

Beach: WOW! Sandals cannot take credit for what nature provided…white sand and a sea that offers multiple and ever-changing hues of blue. Nor can they be blamed for the bane of the dreaded sand fleas. They can however take credit for the daily “raking” of the beach area, the small palapas and portable sun shelters that provide much needed shade. Hobie cats, kayaks and water trykes are available but as the surf can get pretty rough on windy days, water sports, dive and snorkeling may not be operating.

Dining: From buffet to specialty restaurants, meals ranged from very good to excellent. When we wanted more casual meals or a quick snack, a Dino’s pizza or take-out from the pub made an excellent alternative. The Christmas Day turkey and stuffing at Bahama Bay was even better than Mom used to make. Our two meals at La Parisienne were both very special…escargots and rack of lamb deserve special mention. Returning Guest dinner was the best in terms of food, company and ambience that we’ve ever attended.

Entertainment: Christmas Eve show and chocolate buffet was a very fun evening. Nightly shows at the bandstand such as the Raggae Jam and Night of Love were very enjoyable. But all the stops were pulled for the New Years Eve gala. From cocktails on the terrace to a buffet that offered no end of choices we’re sure no-one’s palate was left unsatisfied. The entertainment and dancing rocked and the midnight fireworks were nothing short of spectacular. Let me assure you that New Years Day saw the guests moving at a much slower and relaxed pace.

Staff: If we wanted to commend everyone who offered us a smile, friendly greetings and quality service then we would need a full list of every employee who was on duty throughout our 11 day stay. However, there were some who went above and beyond and we felt like we had made new best friends…Warrenique and Romeo from the main pool bar and Khadijah (sp?) at La Parisienne, you exude charm and warmth and humour.

Management: Never before have we seen such a visible and approachable management team. Each and every day they made an effort to interact with guests and ensure that there were no unresolved issues. This commitment to quality service is reflected by an entire staff who are “SIMPLY the BEST”. Jeremy, David , David and Sharlaine you should be extremely proud.

The only downside to the whole vacation was that yesterday we had to leave paradise and return to the bone-chilling temperatures of the Great White North.

Note: Butler vs non- butler levels. We did not have butler service nor did we feel we suffered because of that. We enjoyed a good-natured game of “Beat-the-Butler to the Cabanas” and won nine times out of ten. Stephen said he was really going to miss us!!

It was our pleasure to have hosted your 30th Anniversary trip and we are so pleased that Sandal Emerald Bay was able to provide the perfect escape from the winter flurries! What a great idea- trade in that white snow for the white sand beaches of Exuma!

We spent four nights and even though the weather wasn't great we had a wonderful time. The room was fantastic! Comfortable bed, spacious bathroom and a great balcony. The grounds were immaculate. We can't say enough about the staff. Each and every person was friendly and helpful. A special shout-out to: Christopher the manager,Simeon, Chantel, Gerard, Anroy, Daniella and the afternoon girls at Cafe de Paris. We hope to return again with better weather!

We just returned from our third stay at Sandals Emerald Bay. We love it there - everyone is so accommodating and we always enjoy this luxurious resort. But this year, we did have one issue. We were upgraded to a beautiful one-bedroom suite which was lovely and appreciated. However, we were automatically given the services of three butlers. We should have declined, but didn't know how to tactfully say we really didn't want the extra attention. They were all very nice and tried their best to please, but we just wanted to be left alone and relax. In our two previous years, we were very happy to make our own dinner reservations and get our own drinks and food. And, of course, we then felt obligated to tip, not wanting to hurt their feelings.
My suggestion to Sandals, and the reason for giving this feedback, is that they should ask their guests upon check-in if they would like a butler or butlers to be part of the upgraded room. We would have said "no" and been able to just relax and do our own thing.
