Hoopers Bay Villas Exuma
Reviewed April 30, 2009

Because I have never been to the island of Exuma, I was hesitant to rent this holiday home.
You just can’t tell from photos. After numerous of calls and discussions with Sue (the owner), we took the plunge. We stayed in the yellow cottage “the yellow elder”, It was exactly as it appeared in the photos. What the owner did not tell us was that there was coffee, tea, milk and other breakfast beverages which was a pleasant surprise. The kitchen was well equipped and the hair dryer in the bath room came in handy. This place is a little bigger than what I expected in a cottage. It is well kept. We had a chance to meet with people from Italy who were also staying at the cottages. We did not talk much (I don’t speak Italian and their English was not very good either) they appeared to be enjoying themselves. The beach which is just across the road is unbelievable. What was even more surprising about the beach is that it is hidden and the times that we went there, we were the only ones on the beach! I travel a lot and I am always looking for deals and this was a hidden treasure. I do hope that they keep it this way. I highly recommend Hoppers Bay Cottages.
The owner was very accommodating.

Sergiono is in the business of writing as I. Is it possible we were both at two different places?

I say that because it sounds like he was expecting Nassau’s 5-star, Atlantis Hotel!

Hooper's Bay Villas (HBV) isn't that and wasn't advertised as that as I researched before making the trip.

First, they are brand, spanking new. HBV was built to provide the visitor with all the comforts of home that you would expect, while at the same time, providing a rich and unique experience, immersed in the island way of life. HBV is so new, some of the landscaping was still in progress. Our family was able to look past that.

HBV provided a comfortable lifestyle coupled with affordability while still remaining nestled into the quiet, local charm that the Bahamas are well known for which is why I went there with my family in the first place.

And that's exactly what we got. First, air conditioning, mostly unheard of by the locals, provided the level of comfort we were used to. Plus, there are two bathrooms with plenty of hot water, two bedrooms and all the regular amenities giving us all the comforts of home. There's a beautiful, big kitchen that allowed us to provide our own meals which added to the feeling of being "home" but on an island with beaches second-to-none! That was the essence of our stay which capsulated our great experience.

And ahhh, the beaches! No, HBV does not sit squarely on the beach. We had to walk across the street, cut through on the provided path, past a few pine trees, taking several minutes that found us on one of the most exclusively, fabulous and private beaches in the entire world, certainly in the western hemisphere! White, sugary sandy, pristine beaches with an element of privacy only enjoyed by the wealthiest of entertainment and business moguls!

Tell me, where else can regular families enjoy such intimate luxury at HPV prices?

And all this can be enjoyed with a short flight from central or southern Florida to Exuma at just the fraction of the costs you would expect to pay at a crowded, tourist spot, where you have no problem bumping into the hoards of 'guests', more closely resembling one of those cheap, cruise ships filled with shoulder to shoulder crowds, more like what you see at the checkout lines at Wal-Mart!

HPV is not that.

As a fellow writer, I respect Sergiono. But had he been a little bit more patient, put his pen down for half an hour and settled into the fresh, newness of HPV, absorbed it's quiet, inviting charm that provided all the basic comforts of his own home...he would have realized that he and his family had embarked on an incredibly, wonderful and unique experience that he and his family would've remembered and cherished for an entire life time!

If not a lifetime, at least until his kids coaxed him back to the island and its majestic tranquility and fun in the sun privacy offered and realized at Hooper's Bay Villas!

I reserved Hoopers Ba;y Villas over a year ago for February, Presidents week. I was looking forward to an affordable vacation as promised by the website. I arrived on a Sunday with my family, my three children and my wife. First, the property is located off the main highway on Exuma. It is not centrally located. The villa we rented was actually a cottage. No one was there to greet us when we arrived, we had to wait for half an hour while the care taker arrived. Upon entering the house we noticed broken furniture in the living room. There was only air conditioning in one room, the living room. The doors to the bed rooms were covered with mold and mildew. Both bath rooms had repairs that had been left in an unfinished condition, with unfinished plaster showing all over. Two lamps in either bedroom had exposed wires. A ceiling fan hung so low over the bed in the master bedroom that if you stood up in the bed its blades would strike you if you were a tall person. The grounds around the cottage were littered with construction debris. The cottage was located across from a garbage strewn lot. Finally, the property had no beach access as promised on the website, the beach was two miles away by car. I left the very day I arrived e-mailing the owner who responded by saying all that had been promised had been delivered. We went and were lucky enough to locate another hotel that more than fit the bill. I requested that my stay be treated as a cancellation and my second payment returned I have not heard from the owner.

In response to Sergiogo’s review for Hoopers Bay Villas (HBV), we dispute the report of 21st March, 2008 for the following reasons:

1) Sergiogo claims that he made the booking over a year ago. His booking was made on October 8, 2007.
2) Sergiogo claims that the property is off the highway – he is correct. The property is approx. 100 feet from the highway, and the highway is visible from the front porch. On the Island, Hoopers Bay is considered to be centrally located as it is between the main airport and downtown, and it takes less than 10 minutes to get to either location.
3) “The villa we rented was actually a cottage” – this is nothing more than semantics. Sergiogo viewed pictures of the exterior and interior of the cottages before making his booking.
4) Broken Furniture – all the furniture is less than a year old and there is no broken furniture.
5) He’s correct - there is only one a/c in the cottage – however, Sergiogo does not point out the size of the a/c or its BTU’s. Besides, he did not stay at the cottage so how does he know the effectiveness of the a/c.
6) Mold and mildew, plaster everywhere – unfounded (the building is new).
7) “A ceiling fan hung so low over the bed in the master bedroom that if you stood up in the bed its blades would strike you if you were a tall person” – I would hope that no adult would need to stand on the bed for any reason, particularly to reach a ceiling fan.
8) The cottage is located across the street from an undeveloped property that has trees and bushes – typical of Exuma, it is rustic.
9) The public beach access to Hoopers Bay Beach (one of the best in Exuma) is approx .5 miles from the cottage. However, the beach access our guests use is directly across the street. Sergiogo might have missed this because it is unassuming and the beach is hidden by pine trees (it is a secluded beach).

Sergiogo and his family arrived and were met by the caretaker as scheduled. The caretaker escorted them into the cottage, showed them around, and gave them the keys. Sergiogo’s wife mentioned to the caretaker how nice the place was, and they even asked for a recommendation on somewhere to eat that afternoon. At no time did they tell the caretaker that they were dissatisfied with the cottage.
Later that afternoon, the caretaker contacted us to let us know that Sergiogo had turned in the key and said that the place was “un-rentable”. Needless to say, the caretaker was shocked at the sudden change. Sergiogo was not specific, nor did he give the caretaker the opportunity to address his dissatisfaction. We immediately sent an email to Sergiogo and tried calling him on his cell phone on several occasions, and also hand-delivered a letter to him at his new location so that we could resolve this matter before he and his family left the island, to which we got no response.

HBV’s is a “Vacation Home Rental” not a hotel. Sergiogo was refunded the money that was due him. I can’t help but feel that Sergiogo needed onsite amenities for his young kids which we do not have.

We welcome constructive criticism and suggestions from our guests – this is how we improve. We have many satisfied guests who are now booking their future vacation with us.

We vacation with our children in Exuma, and spend all day on the beach at Hoopers Bay swimming and snorkeling. Our children look forward to going to Exuma and treat it as an adventure. After all this is where part of Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed.
