Hoopers Bay Villas Exuma
Reviewed July 24, 2012

What can I say, I just read the review from the people who stayed 3 days prior to our visit...I did not find this to be true. Grant it the cottages are not the Grand isles or Sandals. But, the cost per nights stay is apples to oranges.. The cottage was exactly what my husband and I were expecting. We wanted more of the island experience, REMEMBER the island is very undeveloped and yes the roads may hold some water after a rain......With that being said, my husband and I just returned from Exuma. We stayed in the yellow elder. July 15-22 2012. I had done alot of reseach on different accomodations and beaches on the island prior to booking. We were looking for something clean and cozy and centerally located, but the main thing we were looking for was a beautiful secluded beach, and that is exactly what we got. The beach was directly across the street and the photos do NOT do this beach justice. We explored the island and found our beach to be one of the very best!!!! Love, Love, Love, Hoopers Bay beach. The convenience of the cottage to Smitty's, one of the grocery/liquor store was really nice, we road the bikes to the store at least once a day. The cottages were very well stocked with everything you would need to prepare meals if you wanted, and we found this was very nice to help cut down on some food cost. We really enjoyed our stay with Hoopers Bay Villas and we will definitely be returning..

My family and I just returned from a week in the Bahamas which we split between Exuma and Nassau. We stayed at Hoopers Bay Villas for the 1st part of our trip and loved every second, we were in the Yellow cottage and it was perfect for our family of 4. If you are looking for 5 star luxury accomodations then maybe these villas are not for you, but if you are looking for an extremely comfortable, laid back beach cottage then Hoopers Bay Villas are perfect for you! The villas are extremely clean and tidy, with everything you could ever need (full kitchen, coffee maker, kettle, iron, towels, air conditioning). I have read reviews about the beach being far away, this is not true at all, its true they are not ON the beach but a 1 minute walk or less will take you to arguably the most beautiful beach on the island! All you have to do is cross the road and walk down the little path. We travelled with our 17 month old daughter and Sue was fabulous for making sure a playpen was available and answering my thousands of questions. Roslin the handy man is also great, if there is anything you need he is more than happy to help. One night a breaker tripped and we couldnt find the panel, we had to call him at 8:30pm and he came right over. There are also Kayaks, beach chairs and bikes available, along with any other beach item you could ever need. We had a 17 year old with us and she was NEVER bored! I am a very picky traveler (my husband will vouch for that), and I HIGHLY recommend Hoopers Bay Villas. If you are looking for a laid back, relaxing vacation you must visit Exuma, it is paradise! Our only regret was not staying another week (or forever)!!!

We arrived around 10 pm at the airport, where Mr. Bill, the caretaker, picked us up and brought us to the our cottage. We were surprised how spacious but cosy it was. The house offers all you can think of. All rooms have a.c. and a fan, the windows have insect sreens, although we didn´t have any problems with mosquitos around the place. There´s a big fridge in the kitchen and the water is drinkable. The interior of the house is neat and clean and the area around the cottages is well looked after. It´s only a few minutes walk to the most wonderful beach. You really have the whole bay to your own. We saw stingrays, starfish and seaturtles.
We were happy about the bikes, which took us to Georgetown. It´s a twenty minutes ride along the mainstreet and we were pleased that the local cardrivers drove very carefully. For bikes, helmets, baskets... ask Roslin the handyman, who is very helpful. If you have any questions or concerns you can contact Bill, who lives next door. We want to thank him again for his courteous help in our special situation with hurricane Irene. When we decided to leave the island, Bill did phonecalls for us in the very early morning (7 am) , drove us to the airport twice and saw that we got on a plane. We really appreciate his reassuring manner and patience.
We felt so sorry that we had to cut short our stay, because the whole place seemed like paradise to us. We plan to come back as soon as possible to Great Exuma and we´re looking forward to staying at Hoopers Bay Villas again.

We wanted to go to the beach, the beach and the beach. That's what we did! There is a beach access at only 5 minutes of walk. The sand is white, the water turquoise and very warm. The beach was deserted and we had 800 meters of beach to ourselves - a little piece of paradise.

The cottage was clean and great for our 12 day vacation. We cooked our meals and had what we needed to be comfortable. Ask Sue, the owner, if you want to know what is at the cottage or not. She is very helpful.

We borrowed snorkling kits in the mini-garage behind the cottage and asked Bill to drive us around when we needed to go to the bank, grocery store or laundromat. He is a really great neignbor to have around.

When we arrived, we had our North American beat, but we soon learned to slow down to the Bahamian rythme: with the heat, we had no choice!

It hardly rained and we enjoyed the sun. Siestas were a must - it was so hot.

You have to rent a car for a day and drive down to the Tropic of Cancer beach, eat at Santana's, rent a boat and snorkle for a day and go to The Chat and Chill for lunch - it's a memorable experience!

Our yellow cottage was clean and comfy. You have all what you need for a stay away from home... but don't expect the Ritz - you aren't paying for that. However, if you want a good place to stay to afford going to the Bahamas - go for it and enjoy it! It's a quiet and safe place to be.

Water is drinkable. You don't need to boil it. The grocery store is a 5 minute walk to your right. No phone! Don't hesitate to ask Bill to drive you around, he is really nice.

don't pay attention to any negative comments. If you're looking for a fun and relaxing vacation on a beautiful island with the most amazing beaches and water then stay here!

We stayed in the Pink cottage, the walk to the beach was 5 mins where it's basically secluded and private. Warm and crystal clear water! the most beautiful beaches we've ever seen.

The cottage contained everything required with a full kitchen, a/c, scuba gear, bikes to explore the island and other beaches,

The locals are very friendly, they all say "hello", and we felt very safe at all times on the island. Even when we're the only 2 people on the beach!

Suggestions - bring some food from home for quick cooking. you want to spend your time on the beach! there is a grocery store 10 mins away, which is closed on Sunday. Prices are higher than what you're expecting but not by much. A loaf of bread was $3.50, ice cream was $10. Things that are imported are obviously more expensive.

unfortunately for us, our trip was cut short due to hurricane Irene. Sue and her staff was very caring for our safety and always there when we had questions. We are going back to Hoppers bay villas next year and would recommend it to all our friends.

This was our first trip to Bahamas and we booked the Hoopers Bay Villas which we located on a last minute vacation website. The cottages, while basic, are very clean and well appointed. The beds could be a little softer, however we did not come to the Bahamas to sleep. The cottage itself was much bigger than anticipated, with two full bathrooms, which was great. Air conditioning units were located in the master bedroom and the living room, and they kept the place quite cool. Only issue, at least for the Pink Cottage we stayed in, was that there was no air conditioning unit in the second bedroom and despite the ceiling fan in there, it was quite warm. Cable TV and free Wi Fi were great to be able to touch base with home while away. The official beach access for this cottage is about a 5 minute walk away, however there is also right across the street from the property, another access point through a vacant property. There you are greeted to one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. The waters were calm, warm and turquoise. The water was crystal clear, no weeds etc and no waves. There were always lots of coral pieces and interesting shells to collect. Other than Tropic of Cancer Beach, which we visited on Little Exuma, Hoopers Bay beach was BY FAR, the most beautiful on the island, in my opinion. The whole wk we were there, only twice did we see anyone else on the beach. We literally had this paradise to ourselves.
Wonderful food could be found at several locations, such as the local fish fry (best ribs ever), as well as the restaurant Augusta Bay resort, and also Palm Bay resort had a reasonable menu as well. Two grocery stores nearby, had enough to get us through the week.
One suggestion: taxis are really the only way to get around and they are quite expensive, so I would suggest renting a car for at least a few days of your visit, so that you can really take in all the beatiful spots on the island. I rented for 3 days from Thompson, but if I had to do it again, would rent for the full wk, as it cost me quite a bit for taxis on the other days.
Overall, Hoopers Bay Cottages are affordable, cosy and have everything you need to have a relaxing low key vacation in Paradise.

Me and My girlfriend stayed there a week during low-season in the beginning of July. We were worried about the weather since it had turned to clouds and rain the last weeks in south Florida where we flew in from. On the islands there was no worries! All the mornings started out clear and sunny and we had a couple of mid day showers but this was actually quite refreshing after spending a few hours on the beach.

The cottage was perfect for us. We were lucky enough to have the whole 4-person cottage for ourselves. Free internet that worked ok. TV to watch in the evenings. The kitchen was equipped with the essentials for cooking and we cut down the cost of living a lot by eating pasta with sauces bought from the nearby "mini-mart" that had hat you needed to survive. Next doors to it they also had a liquor store for the sunset beers!

Be aware of the island prices. Everything needs to be imported to the islands which raises the prices. Coming from the states where everything was so cheap our jaws dropped when we saw the price of meat, other groceries and snacks!

We are active people not afraid to move. The bikes were a great asset to have getting around. We biked to George Town (To Bill's surprise) one morning. Not a problem at all since the temperature wasn't that high yet. It took us maybe 15 minutes one way.

Another day we thought about walking there but it didn't take more than 5 minutes before two local girls stopped with their car and asked us where we were going and gave us a ride into town. Same thing happened when we were coming back. I have done some travelling around the world and I must put the Bahamian locals in the top for their hospitality!

I have read some of the more displeased reviews about the villas and must say that getting to the beach was no problem for us. It's true that you have to walk alongside the road and walk a small slightly rocky path down to the beach but hey, weren't we born with feet just for this purpose? And yes the cars drive past you quite fast sometimes but just take a step away from the road when you hear them!

The beach in Hoopers Bay is the nicest I have experienced! The water is clear. During our week we were at most 6 people sharing the (at least) half a mile beach. Sand is so soft that your feet sink deep into it and it's CLEAN! If you take the bikes to the beach you don't have to carry them on this path. Just leave them next to the road. Nobody will steal them since there's no crime on the island!

We missed our connecting flight from Nassau to Exuma and stayed the first night at Wyndhem hotel in Nassau on the airlines expense. I saw their private beach from the balcony and for sure it is more accessible then the beach in Hoopers Bay or Jolly Hall bay. BUT! You will for sure not be alone and have the exclusive feel of enjoying a true Bahamian experience being one of hundreds of people crowding the scenery...

I would definitely go back to Hoopers Bay villas if I get the possibility to visit Bahamas again. Do the trip with Roberts adventure tours. It is expensive but worth it! I also did two dives from George town. Nice dive sites with a lot of underwater life to look at. Other than that just relax and enjoy the atmosphere on an island that hasn't yet become too overexploited by the tourists.

Room Tip: Ask Sue or Bill about the room that has the internet modem if you want the best reception on your wi...
