“Needs loving attention”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

My wife and I spent 3 nights here in July between renting a house further south and moving to another resort further north. We were the only guests at what is apparently a very slow time of year. Kenny, the only staff person we saw the whole time, was sweet and super helpful. She prepared a nice dinner for us one evening and checked at least once a day to see if there was anything we needed. The bay and beach below the resort are spectacular, and we were just about the only ones in the water or walking the beach. The pool has been closed and filled in, and there are other signs the property has been somewhat neglected since Sammy's death. We were told the family is deciding whether to sell or revitalize the resort.
Cat Island is indeed a terrific place to seek peace and quiet, gorgeous beaches with few other visitors, and friendly locals. We were delighted to be there for 2 weeks, but this was our least favorite of the 3 places we stayed.

Room Tip: Rooms on the hill get better breezes.

We arrived on a Monday for our honeymoon vacation. We had based our decision to stay at this resort in part by others recommendations (trip advisor, Fodor's, etc.) and clearly these reviews were written some time ago. First of all when we arrived we found out that Sammy T passed away 2 years ago and now the resort is for sale. Until someone buys the property Kenny and her husband, Charles run the resort but we only saw Kenny working (Charles sat in a chair and watched his wife work). Kenny could not be any sweeter in trying her hardest to accommodate us but the resort is too run down...from the outdoor shower faucet that is broken, to peeling paint on the gazebo, to the pool table being broken and filthy, to broken hinges on the cabinet that holds the scuba gear, to the kitchen counter tops that are in need of scrubbing, to the toilets that barely flush, and on and on and on. The food was barely palatable (again, the reviews said "fresh fruit, awesome omlette's, fresh seafood, etc.) and over priced. We ate all of our meals at the resort next door after one day of Sammy T's food, which helped make our stay a little better. The property is beautiful....perfect beach, snorkeling right off the shore. By the way, when we arrived there was one other couple staying at the resort but they left the next day and we were the only people staying there. I found out no one else had booked a cottage until the following week - that should definitely be a red flag to anyone in doubt of this review. I would never recommend this as a vacation destination. Until someone fixes up the place and gets in someone to manage the staff this will never be worth the money. Call the resort next door (Halverston's) and you will be much happier with your visit to Cat Island.

To choose Sammy T’s you have to know Cat Island.
To the traveler who is weary of the noise and bustle of our big cities, Cat Island in The Bahamas offers the exquisite experience of a quiet “heaven on earth”. Palm-trees sway gently in the trade winds and turquoise waters bathe the soft sand of spectacular and untouched beaches. These hidden treasures transport even those of us who “have seen and done it all” into unexplored territory. Do not expect luxury such as you may find in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. Instead expect comfort and peace. It is true that, in some years, hurricanes like Irene or Sandy, have blown through Cat Island raking havoc with its lush vegetation. The storm waters have taken bites off the single highway that runs from north to south. The beautifully temperate Bahamians, however, sixteen hundred souls at the latest count, keep smiling gently and never seem to lose their patience.
Cat Island, they say, has been named after thousands of felines that ran wild on the island at one time. It is one of the least developed islands of the Bahamas, a “secret” shared among boaters and flyers. My husband and I have visited Cat Island four times over the years flying a Piper Archer into New Bight, the centrally located airport and stayed at other beach resorts on the island, all fine choices. This time we took a commercial airline from Nassau into Arthur Town airport which serves the North of Cat Island.
Sammy T’s is very special indeed. The main attraction is an immaculate beach, a private cove some two hundred meters wide of unspoiled white sand that turns pink by the light of the rising sun. During the week we stayed there the number of other people on the beach ranged from zero to three. Nothing ever stirred up the crystal clear and pristine waters and never did we hear the blaring sound of radios so ubiquitous on public beaches.
The owner of the resort passed away two years ago, but his spirit is clearly alive in the people who work for the resort. They keep the beautiful tropical garden intact and take pride in Sam s collection of Bahamian art, paintings that decorate the walls of the bar and of the dining room. An artist’s eye for collections from the sea has turned the room into an exotic art center with sculptures of nature displayed in the center of each glass table.
The resort features seven individual one- and two-bedroom villas with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, and all the modern equipment offered these days by contemporary resorts. Except that all services are rendered with grace and a typical Bahamian smile. It is this smile that will draw us back to Cat Island, and the milky reflection of the morning sun on the glistening waters of Bennett bay will make us choose once again Sammy T’s Beach Resort.

Room Tip: choose a villa with ocean view for a small differential in rate

My girlfriend and I just returned from our Spring Break 2013 trip on Cat Island. What a wonderful experience and adventure! We were aiming for a vacation that was remote and quiet, even if it required some travel to get there. This was the perfect place for such a trip.

We arrived on a SkyBahamas flight from Nassau on Sunday morning, and were met at the airport by a tourguide sent by the resort to pick us up. After a 20-minute cab ride from the airport, we arrived at Sammy T's. The outstanding manager, Kenny, showed us around the property and 1/2-mile private beach and then to our cottage. We were lucky enough to have the resort to ourselves for the first half of our week there, but even with every room booked, the place wouldn't feel crowded or noisy.

We were upgraded to a two bedroom cottage with a nice view of both the ocean and the lush grounds. The cottage had plenty of fans and air-conditioning to keep it cool during the day, and plenty of windows to keep it pleasant at night. We really only used the kitchenette for keeping some snacks and cold water, but there was a microwave and plenty of storage space along with the fridge. TV in the room was pretty basic (4 channels from Miami, 2 from the Bahamas), but who's visiting for the TV?

We spent most of our days on the beautiful beach soaking up the sun, but we walked to the next towns (a few miles north to Dumfries, a couple miles south to Bennett's Harbor) to experience the island. It is a quiet place (only about 1600 residents), so the general store in Dumfries was about the only place to get basic groceries. Kenny also arranged a rental car for us on very short notice so that we could explore the rest of the island. The car was $80 for the day, and could be easily added to the room charges.

Meals at the hotel were delicious, and we ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel. Breakfast was pancakes, french toast, eggs, bacon, etc., served until 10:30. We stopped in the office to order dinner each day around noon, so they can make sure the dish is available that day. During our stay, we tried different dishes of grouper, snapper, shrimp, and the island specialty, conch. Try the conch chowder, and ask for it SPICY. :-)

I would recommend bringing some bug spray, as we were bitten by insects a lot. This is not a reflection of the hotel, but rather of the Bahamian climate. Also, the water is not drinkable on the island, so it's best to keep some water in the fridge for when you come in from the beach. Again, this is not a reflection of the hotel, but simply a way of island life. I would also recommend bringing lots of cash to the island. There is one bank, which has the island's only ATM, and it's the only place you'll find that takes credit cards. I normally don't like to travel with cash, but it's a safe place to do so, and it's how business gets done.

I can't recommend this resort enough! The staff are very friendly and we found Sammy T's to be just the kind of place we wanted to stay. The owner, Aubynette, helped us with our reservation, and was great when we met her in person at the resort. Thanks to everyone there who made us feel at home!

My husband and I visited Cat Island at the end of January and stayed at Sammy T's in part based on some excellent reviews. The beach is beautiful and practically private. We had it all to ourselves the first two days. The water is crystal clear and gorgeous. Sammy T's is in an ideal location.

The resort itself is somewhat run down. The bath tub in number 2 cabin is in much need of reglazing. The bathroom sink faucet provided only cold water. With some much needed TLC, the resort could match it's setting and provide a wonderful vacation spot.

However, the manager Kennie and her husband Charles go out of their way to make guests feel welcome and cared for. They will recommend local eateries and sights and help with acquiring transportation or drive you to Da Smoke Pot, a must see place for excellent dining and entertainment with the Rake and Scrape Band.

Bailey and Kaluha are the delightful resident dogs who help make guests feel at home and are willing companions when walking the beach. Bring dog biscuits with you and you will make friends for life!

I'm hopeful that with some minor repair and upgrading of the facilities, Sammy T's can regain its fine reputation and continue to serve Cat Island tourists.

I would definitely go back for the beach, water and the dogs!

The resort has wireless internet if you want, 6 channels delivered by antenna, the best beach ever, kayaks and floats for free. The meals at the restaurant on property are iffy because some of the ingredients may not be available. but if you ask for something in time, they can go into town to get it. each meal took between 30-40 minutes between ordering and eating you can also ask in advance and it can be brought to you. they will also bring your food anywhere on property so take advantage of the chairs by the beach or the gazebo overlooking the ocean.

Kenny's husband even popped in to town to pick up some bug spray for me.
The nearby beach had amazingly calm and cool water and we spent quite awhile on the water in the free kayaks.
Kenny Fox runs the resort and lives there with her family. The entire staff was really pleasant and aimed to please in everything.
Kenny even fixed our antenna reception (though it took an hour she got it done).

Room Tip: number 2 gets great breeze and you cannot hear the cars that pass in the night. you are also right o...

My girlfriend and I visited Sammy T's from Christmas Day to January 8th 2012 and found a gem in the solitude of Cat Island. Upon arriving, we were met with such friendly staff, Kennirica (Manager), her husband Charles and their adorable son Rico. Coming from one of the busiest cities in the world, this Island is a reminder of what basic and essential living is about and where everyone knows and cares about each other.

Being an adventurous couple, we explored the Island on bikes, car and walking and got to know a lot of the locals. Every time we passed someone on the road (there's only one that runs from end to end on the Island, with no stop lights), there was always a honk, a wave and many smiles. My girlfriend and I made it a game to count the number of times we got a honk, wave or smile. It was endearing.

The tempo here is very relaxed so if you are looking to unwind, this is the perfect place for you. Sammy T’s has one of the most pristine and beautiful beaches we saw on the Island. Most times, we were the only ones on our own private beach. The resort has two very loving and protective dogs, Baileys and Kaluah. If you want to walk the beach late at night or in the early morning hours, they know to accompany you and stay with you until you are ready to return to your bungalow.

We visited and experienced many places just by exploring or asking our host and the locals. Kennirica and Charles were always gracious and took us out to remote areas on the Island where we were able to observe Eagle rays, sting rays and endangered turtles (we took lots of photos and videos). They took us with them to experience the Island life of catching fish and conch and delivering them to local businesses and restaurants. On my girlfriend’s birthday, we visited a wonderful restaurant called “Da Smoke Pot” and had a fresh meal of grouper (literally caught in the morning) and danced the night away with local folk music called “Rake and Scrape” with the entire staff at Sammy T’s. Charles also went out of his way to catch a beautiful conch so my girlfriend can have a piece of the Island to bring back home.

Perhaps, one of the most enchanting times was on New Year’s Eve and we went out to welcome in the New Year and saw flashing lights everywhere. At first, we thought the lights were from cyclists or fireworks, but after a few moments, we realized there were thousands of “fire flies” or what the locals call as “lamp lighters” surrounding us from everywhere, how befitting. My girlfriend remarked, “Wow, Nature’s own Christmas lights”.

Cat Island is a wonderful place, something we will always remember for its pristine and beautiful natural habitat. The most important element is by far the people we had the fortune to get to know at Sammy T’s and the locals.
