A year later, we are still impressed with Rich's little slice of paradise. If you are looking for a super easy escape from reality and a great price, this is it. Literally saw 2 people our entire time on the beach. Can not recommend this place more.

Tail Winds is so beautiful and peaceful. Everything was excellent the host Richard is such a funny guy and the ladies that work there are so nice.

The beach......
What can I way it is literally heaven on earth miles and miles of white sandy beaches that turns pink with the sunrise.

The water is crystal clear and you can spear fish right of the beach.

The Tiki bar right on the beach is so relaxing.

The set up at this resort is so awesome. If you are visiting Cat Island Tail Wind is the place to stay.

Not only it's a great resort but the price is unbelievable.

This will turn into a traditional stay every August.

This may be a long review, so here we go.
First, let's talk about Cat Island. A largely undeveloped paradise blessed with water clearer than anything in your wildest dreams, white sand that is almost pink, rolling hills and absolutely no people.
Really, no people. To every single beach my fiancee and I went we were the only ones there.
Even in front of Tailwinds we usually had the whole 2-3 mile beach to ourselves.
There are no resorts, the road to Tailwinds is a dirt road and renting a car means borrowing one from a local and paying him for it. You will be amazed by the silence.
Now let me talk about Tail Winds and our awesome host Richard.
Tail Winds itself consists of 4 bungalows around an elevated deck with a small pool. Each bungalow is like a spacious, comfy NY studio apt, except of course you can see the beach from anywhere. Because it rained a lot on our trip (unusual for the time of year) we spent a fair amount of time in our bungalow or on the deck and we really appreciated the open, comfortable design.
When it didn't rain we would walk down the 10 steps to the tiki bar, go swim at the beach (in my opinion the nicest of the Cat Island beaches, which is like saying it's the nicest place in heaven) and come back and grab a beer and lay down on one of the excellent zero gravity chairs.
What makes the place even more special than the seclusion and the great design however, is the sense of having a family for the holiday
Richard is a great guy with a huge personality who built the place in part to enjoy his retirement and in part to give tourists like us a good ol’ time in Cat Island. With him and our fellow Tailwinders (Kris and Chris from Munich) we went hunting for crabs, took a trip out to Da Smoke Pot (great food, fun music) and went Karaoke-ing on Saturday night at the very modest club in Arthur’s Town (it was a blast).
Also housekeepers Altamese and Mispa are very attentive and Altamese is the sweetest lady you’ll ever meet. She brought us boiled crab as a gift!
In conclusion, go here; you’ll have a wonderful vacation in a secluded paradise.

Room Tip: All Cottages are equally nce. Flap House and Hana's Hanger are a tiny bit closer to the sea.

This lovely resort is what you've always dreamed about! Located right on the sandy West side beach of the remote Cat Island in the Bahamas, Tailwinds made our visit a real joy. We were there to attend a beach wedding on May 18 and stretched our stay to 2 wonderful weeks.
Our cottage, like all 4, had full view of the beach and ocean. All 4 of the cottages feature a king sized bed, kitchenette, very nice bathroom, and a great (fun) outside shower attached to the bathroom. What more could one want? The fully stocked Tiki bar is about 20 ft from the beach, making it very accessible, and, being on an honor system, it is very convenient and friendly.
We found that the meals were great, prepared as you want in either classic or Bahamian style. The staff is wonderful, assuring clean rooms daily, as well as assistance in any need you may have. We hope to return to Cat Island and Tailwinds to enjoy it's relaxing wonder again.

Tail Winds is ideally situated right next to a smooth stretch of beach on the northwest point of Cat Island. At this end of the island, there are only two resorts (Tail Winds and Shanna's Cove) and the rest are private houses which are only occupied a few weeks out of the year. Tail Winds has only four bungalows currently. I think Shanna's Cove has maybe five or six. So you generally don't see anyone else on the beach -- on our most traffic-heavy day during a week's stay, I think we saw five people total. Such a crowd!

This means you're not going to get a lot of personal catering the way you'd get in a more populated area with lots of huge resorts, and the level of catering you do get is very dependent on the small handful of people staffing these places. But if you're the kind of self-sufficient vacationer who's fine to chill out with sea, sun, and sand, you're in for a treat!

We happened to luck out and get the best of both worlds: when we first arrived at Tail Winds, we were the only people staying and the owner, Richard, was back in the States for a few days, so we had the whole place to ourselves. Our housekeeper Altamese was very friendly and helpful, but most of the time we were left to our own devices and that suited us perfectly. It was like we had our own private resort!

Then when Richard got back, he was really wonderful about taking us out for dinner to Da Smoke Pot (local rake-and-scrape joint), karaoke at the Hot Spot, drinks at Grammy's (Grammy is "four score" years old and a real character!), and for a local Bahamian souse breakfast. One day he even put together a huge plate of fruit for a snack for us, just 'cuz.

Richard is a colorful personality as well -- a builder and a pilot from New York who has clearly put a lot of love and skill into Tail Winds, which is his retirement property. We thought everything about the place was so well-done and thoughtful. The bungalows are huge and well-appointed: big screen doors you can open to the ocean breeze, nice white beach-style furniture, flatscreen HDTV with cable, big outdoor shower cubicles, refrigerators, ceiling fans. There's a big deck with a hot tub and lots of comfy lounge chairs with umbrellas for shade. There's also a tiki bar next to the beach as well as one in the main dining room (both bars are "honor" system where you just keep a tally of your own drinks). And if you need more strenuous activity than sitting around tanning and drinking, there are kayaks, bicycles, and snorkeling gear (some decent reefs south of the resort along the beach).

As said above, the place where the resort is actually situated is ideal: there are no rocks in front of Tail Winds (whereas there are rocks at other places along the beach) and the property is literally steps away from the water (unlike Shanna's Cove which is set back a ways and up a hill).

For food, we found that in most places it was pretty basic, i.e. don't expect to be wowed by Bahamian cuisine. However, Shanna's Cove Resort (about five minutes walk north along the beach) does some very good European-inspired three-course dinners at about $40 per head, as well as artisan pizzas for lunch. So if you're in the mood to treat yourself for meals, go there -- Frank and Gabby are the owners and very friendly -- just make sure you let them know by about 2 pm on the day of if you're planning to come for dinner so that they can prepare.

Final note: BRING BUG SPRAY. Mosquitoes and no-see-ums love me, and they were out in force around dusk every single day, and also along the Man o' War hiking trail. Tail Winds does provide some bottles, but I think these are mostly what other guests have left behind so there's no guarantee. Bring your own just to be safe.
