“What a view and history”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

Highest point in the Bahamas so the view is fantastic so pick a sunny day and bring a camera. When you go and if you visit Cat this is a must see, wear sneakers. Not a hard hike and if you don't want to climb take the low trail. Read a little about the history before you go because you will not appreaciate the experience unless you know the background of how the Hermitage was built.

“Very hot walk”
Reviewed December 18, 2012

I think this place is haunted! It's an interesting testament to what one man can do when motivated. Feels quite old (older than it is).

“not much to see”
Reviewed December 15, 2012

The sign leads to an overgrown path to 3 tombs, wear insect repellent. Only the history descibed on the plaque is of interest.

“Take the Steep Trail!”
Reviewed December 15, 2012

Many people "warned" us about taking the "steep" trail to climb up to the Hermitage. Please! This isn't steep at all. The only reason you would want to take the more gradual climb is if you have some severe balance issues. By taking the more dramatic trail you will be treated to carved versions of the Stations of the Cross. When you consider this was all created by a single-minded, dedicated priest it adds to impressive nature of the Hermitage. The buildings are small and simple, yet elegant all at the same time. As other reviewers have noted, the views are amazing from this vantage point. Wish I had a wide angle lens so that I could have taken a picture where the Caribbean and Atlantic would appear in one shot. So, take the "steep" trail, bring your camera, and enjoy the serenity of the area.
VERY IMPORTANT, when we were there the road sign for the Hermitage had been damaged and removed. So if you're southbound you will turn left immediately past the police station. If you're northbound, look for the white pillar at the fork in the road, then you will turn right immediately before the police station. The access road is narrow and easily overlooked. We drove past it several times before taking a "guess" and turning on to it. I've included a picture from the road while we are headed back to the main road.

“Worth the climb”
Reviewed November 13, 2012

Loved the views - make sure you wear tennis shoes and not flops as the path is at times steep, gravely and a short narrow starway
