“Post Card Perfect Beaches”
Reviewed February 14, 2010

If you’re looking for a swim up bar, all-night clubbing, and endless trinket shopping you might as well rip up that plane ticket, Cat Island is not for you. It is an absolute “get-a-way from it all paradise”! Pigeon Cay, owned by Ned and Leslie is one of the best places we’ve ever stayed! The relaxed atmosphere of the Pigeon Cay, and Cat Island for that matter, is outstanding! Beaches that are out of this world are steps from the front door of the most fantastically funky little cottages. With only 7 cottages it feels like you have the place all to yourself. The staff at Pigeon Cay keep the cottages immaculately clean and the grounds well kept. We checked out a few other resorts on the island and found Pigeon Cay to be the most private, comfortable, and quaint of them all. It truly is the perfect little “beach club”.

I’m willing to bet that any of the negative on here is from people that were just wound too tight and couldn’t let go. Everyone working at the resort as well as everyone we met on the island was extremely friendly and helpful. I suggest renting a car (arranged by Leslie from $75-$100) for a few days of exploring. Bikes, Kayaks, Canoes, snorkel gear all comes free at the resort. Get groceries and liquor when you arrive off the plane because the taxis aren’t metered! If not on too much of a budget, forget the food and groceries and Pigeon Cay has everything you need. Breakfast every morning and dinners every night, but you will need to give them a heads up. Very casual setting at the honor bar……or they’ll just bring dinner to your room!

Bring along some bug spray for the evenings……there are little “no-see-ums” around some nights that will riddle you with bites if you’re out on your private deck, wondering the beach in the evening, or visiting with other guests at the honour bar. The bugs didn’t bother me, but my wife was itching like crazy.

We were thinking when we landed……what are we going to do for 2 weeks!……..but we didn’t even scratch the surface of what we wanted to do here. World Class bonefishing in every flat you see, snorkeling and exploring if you rent a jeep or venture on the bikes. Kayaking, skin boarding, relaxing on the quiet beach with a great book, surfing on the windy days, the Hermitage, caving, the blue hole, offshore fishing, exploring all the small villages and towns and chatting with all the super friendly locals. I could just go on and on about how great this place is……..but think you should just see for yourself if you make it to Cat Island!

Pigeon Cay is absolutely awesome. We travel a lot and must say this place is perfect for people who want seclusion, comfortable and clean accommodations, and miles of beach with just your footprints on it. The access to Bonefish is closer than most mailboxes.
If you want to sip a cold Kalik, stare into your ladies eyes on a romantic beach and eat lobster as big as a loaf of bread with out another tourist in sight this is the place. The owners Ned and Leslie are very accommodating and can work out just about anything for you. You just need to ask. However being a self sufficient traveler makes these kind of places what they are. Perfect.
All the Bungalows are clean, well kept, stocked with anything you would need to cook with, have comfy beds, AC (we did not need it) and seating to hang out in. The staff is very kind and helpful. You could be up at 8 am or noon and they would be waiting for you to stir before engaging you for breakfast or coffee. That is a nice touch. They are on your schedule not you on theirs.
The place is perfectly nestled along an amazing 3 mile beach. They have good kayaks to paddle around in, bikes that you can take to the “north shore” or the store, or to the Bonefish flat that is literally in the back yard.
We tried to cook as much as possible to keep the costs down I would recommend that. But that takes planning. We enjoyed a few meals made by the staff and they were fine. A bit pricy but your on an island in the middle of the ocean. So know what to expect and your will fall in love with this place. I give it a 9 out of 10 and my wife says it’s a cute 9.5. Do your home work, know what to expect, compare the other places and if you don’t go here you will regret it. Trust me on this one.

The beauty of doing nothing. If you expect limited service, nothing to do, very limited shopping, limited food opportunities, but hope for lovely beaches and almost no people this is a good opportunity for you. And I would recommend this as THE place on Cat Island. Fernandez Bay Village is bigger and probably more service, but Pigeon Cay has is beat on cozy charm. And the price is very reasonable.

We loved our little house - the biggest - 2 bedroom 2 bath and a little veranda overlooking the beach. Cute dogs came visiting every evening. Leslie and Ned were helpful and very lowkey as you might expect. We cooked every evening. Bring food if you can, things you like. Again limited food shopping.

My husband and I sailed (on our boat) to the Bahamas to get married. We picked Pigeon Cay Beach Club as the destination for our wedding based on a couple of reviews and the wonderful correspondence we had with Leslie (the owner) . Our entire wedding planning was done via email and some limited conversation, mostly between my mother and Leslie - as we were quite limited in our communications while aboard. We arrived to Pigeon Cay on April 15 - having booked all of the cottages and several of the adjacent properties for our family and friends - site unseen. We had 22 people attending our wedding - all traveling from the States.
It was perfect! (you can check out the pictures on the site - we're the couple who got married on the beach with the boat behind us). Leslie and Ned could not have been more pleasant, more accommodating and nicer to work with. It was a wonderful stress free and beautiful event - exactly what we wanted.
Pigeon Cay is the perfect place for a quiet, romantic getaway or a trip with friends. This is a total "decompression" location- beautiful beaches, delicious food, pretty, clean and well appointed cottages and the nicest people I have met in the hotel business. The staff is all wonderful and it is a wonderfully welcoming environment without being intrusive.
I cannot recommend Pigeon Cay Beach Club highly enough. We're really looking forward to our return trip - via plane this time... not the long way via boat!
Hats off to Leslie and Ned and team for making this a beautiful haven in paradise!

We can't say enough positive things about our recent stay at Pigeon Cay. We originally booked a 2 week stay for some quiet beach time. Not too long before leaving for our trip, we decided to get married on the beach rather than a larger affair at home. When we contacted the hosts: "No probem" Leslie made a perfect wedding planner/participant /witness and Ned a witness/photographer. She suggested a (wonderful) minister, picked up the paperwork, and arranged a beautiful dinner for us on the beach. We wouldn't have changed a thing. Ned and Leslie are excellent hosts as they quietly provide help or allow you to just enjoy the beauty of the beach on your own, your choice.

We loved the casual atmosphere, the honor bar, and the cabins are completely furnished with everything needed. The beach is absolutely beautiful; white sand for miles and very few people.

Pigeon Cay provided a perfect vacation after a trying year. It's beautiful, comfortable, the guests and staff all friendly and, while we were there, all of the guests were there for the best of reasons - relaxing escape. For that, Pigeon Cay Beach Club is perfect!

We chose Cat Island because it had no big resorts, casinos, cruise ship landings, just beautiful beaches, friendly residents (of course, there is always an exception or two - no worries), miles of bonefish flats and perfect freedom to simply relax.

If you are looking for excitement (other than catching bonefish!), look elsewhere. Cat Island is a place where the pulse of life slows to a comfortable tropical torpor.

If you expect fine dining, look elsewhere. The food at Pigeon Cay is simple and tasty, as is that at the few restaurants on the island. For those us too accustomed to the over-abundance of modern grocery stores, food shopping is limited and putting meals together can require a bit of creativity - especially when the mail boat is due and things get a bit thin on the shelves.

Dinner is not served every night at Pigeon Cay - you will need to cook occasionally in the evenings. If you are on a tight budget, you may wish to do so more often than absolutely necessary, the resort's food although tasty, is pricey. But, be prepared -- everything on the island is -- from groceries to beer to car rentals to gasoline. It's a small island and everything needs to come in by boat.

The kitchens in the cottages are well-equipped with all appliances and a full array of pots, pans, knives, tools, etc.

If you ask, Leslie will arrange to pickup great fresh-baked whole grain bread from a local baker! Much better than the Wonder Bread equivalent on the store shelves. If it fits in your airline weight allowance, you may want to bring your own herbs, spices, etc. -- selection in the stores is limited and tends toward jumbo sizes.

Now for the truly GREAT stuff! The four-mile beach along Pigeon Cay is gorgeous fine, white sand framing the ever-changing Caribbean water colors (brown or copper polarized sunglasses make the water colors even more outrageous!) and soft ocean clouds. This is on the Sound side of the island, so the surf is gentle with a wonderful relaxing sound. Just inland from the resort is a huge expanse of flats bordered by mangroves along Alligator Creek, below which is a lovely expanse of channels, flats and mangrove islands that eventually open into the the deep channel running out into the Sound where there are abundant sea turtles, rays, grunts, etc. The flats are rich in bonefish that see little pressure - one shock of my trip was a school of somewhere near a hundred bones racing through 6 inches of water to beat the tide out to the channel - an absolutely amazing sound!

The cottages at Pigeon Cay are well appointed - tile floors, solid construction, attractive decor, comfortable furniture (especial the VERY tall bed), ceiling fans (no AC, but the fans and sea-breeze take care of moderating temperature far more pleasantly).

After 9 days at Pigeon Cay, from which we got back last night, we are without question return visitors - we just haven't had time enough to get back!

What a great place. The sounds of small waves breaking on the beach is constant. The rooms and proximity to the water are outstanding. Breakfast is brought to your room each morning and they can provide room service dinners. Kayaks are available and excellent bonefishing opportunities are within walking distance.

Leslie and Ned are terrific hosts and the staff take care of your needs if any.

An honor bar is well-stocked and nearby convenience stores are available so your can stock your kitchen with food and snacks.
