“Fantasy Island”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

Our family has visited the Bahamas for more than 35 years and we thought those idyllic places had disappeared--until we found Cat Island and Fernandez Bay. Miles of beautiful beaches--all to ourselves. Like the islands we visited in the past, that slower pace, no locks on the doors, no telephones, no newspapers, but now with the convenience of cell phone coverage.
We stayed in Royal Palms Cottage, just a few steps from the beach or the club house. The cottage has a wrap around, covered porch with comfy chairs and a hammock. Just those few steps from the front door await two lounge chairs under a thatched roof umbrella on the beach.
Food is excellent, even though served buffet style, which we usually shy away from. Breakfast was a large array of fresh fruits, pastries, meats, and eggs, with the option of ordering cooked to order omelets, etc. We skipped lunch each day but wouldn't dream of skipping dinner. For that meal, there was always a seafood entree and either pork, chicken, or beef. Since we are seafood lovers, we always opted for the delicious seafood. I can't remember having lobster (prepared 3 different ways) three times in one week. Happy hour around the thatched roof outdoor honor bar begins around 7ish with local entertainment. Wonderful appetizers are served a bit later and then dinner in your choice of the airy dining room or outside overlooking the Caribbean.
Donna, at the front desk, is a dream. Want a rental car? She'll arrange it. Need directions to anything? She has them. Want a special celebration dinner? She can arrange it.
Fernandez Bay is in the perfect location on Cat Island. We rented a car for a couple of days and were able to see the entire island in that time. Don't worry about traffic, there's only one traffic roundabout. It is a fascinating island to explore and with such friendly people, there's no worry about getting lost.
Fernandez Bay has kayaks, snorkeling gear, and boats available for those who want to spend time in water adventures.
If you need a break from the busyness of a stressful lifestyle, Fernandez Bay Village is your answer.

As soon as we walked into the main "lobby" we were greeted with warm smiles and firm handshakes (not to mention a cold beer) from both Mr. & Mrs. Armbrister, as they welcomed us to their lovely resort.

When we first started looking for places to stay for our honeymoon, we wanted a place that was quiet, provided adventure, authentic and had charm. Fernandez Bay provided us with all of that. The staff goes above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable and will do whatever it needs to make sure you are pleased. The food was tremendous, the honor bar was fully stocked, and the views of the water never got old.

We stayed at the Royal Palm cottage, steps to the water, sand as soon as you walk out of your door, and a view of the sea that seems to always relax you. The Royal Palm provided us a sanctuary that gave us plenty of privacy throughout our stay.

We highly recommend paddle boarding, kayaking to the blue hole and through the mangroves, snorkeling, riding your bike to Como Hill, taking the private Eco-Tour with Mark, visiting the town, biking to the "Pink Sand" beaches and sipping on many different rum concoctions.

My wife and I can't say enough about our stay there. A special thank you to the wonderful kitchen staff, Donna, Mark, & Mr. and Mrs. Armbrister. You all made our honeymoon perfect and we will cherish the memories you all helped to create.

We are already planning another trip down to stay at one of the houses Fernandez Bay offers with out family.

Just returned from my 7th trip to Fernandez Bay and loved it as always. I refer to it as "barefoot elegance". No plush carpets or velvet but you are right on the sand and steps away from the most perfectly colored sea you've ever seen. There is an "honor system" bar and dinners are buffet style, eaten on an open air patio within steps of the water. There is plenty to do if you want that or you can just luxuriate in the peace and enjoy good food and great environment. Oh, by the way, you almost never see other people on "your" beach - which is just the way I love it! Do give it a try....

If you care about how many stars your accommodations have garnered in the latest surveys, Fernandez Bay Village is probably not for you. Don't get me wrong, I like a good four or five star hotel when I'm in the city. But, if you're looking for a place in which nature has mostly been left alone; where you can still see the stars and the Milky Way at night; where there's little to no traffic; where there are no locks on the doors and everyone knows everyone else; where you can get away from shopping and materialism, then Fernandez Bay Village and Cat Island might just be for you!

So, for this excursion I travelled with not only my fiancee, but also with her parents. We flew from Ft. Lauderdale to Nassau and from there to Cat Island on Sky Bahamas. Sky Bahamas is a friendly little airline that did an exceptional job of getting our party of four to the islands and back with as little drama as seems possible these days. Sky Bahamas has two flights a day to Cat Island and I highly recommend them if you decide to go!

When we arrived at the New Bight airport we were picked up by Rosetta (Zetta's Taxi, 242-447-6334) , one of the many lovely people we met while on the island. Fernandez Bay Village is about five minutes from the airport. We were met at Fernandez Bay Village by one of the owners, Tony. Tony immediately welcomed us and took our luggage to the Beach House. The club house is beautiful and open to the beach, which is spectacular. There is a serve yourself honor bar, the main dining room and a little honor gift shop. We were given a little tour and explanations of how the FBV worked on a typical day. If Fernandez Bay Village was located on an average Caribbean beach, I'd give it a 3 to 3.5 rating as a hotel.

The Beach House: For two couples the Beach House is just perfect! There is a main house with a living room area, a dining area and a kitchen. The front porch also has a table and chairs for four and looks out over the incredible FBV beach. On either side of the main house there are matching bedrooms. The bedrooms are air conditioned with OK beds, pillows and linens, places to hang your clothes and plenty of shelving. Outside each is a private, garden bathroom and shower.

The Beach: The Fernandez Bay Beach, like most if not all of Cat Island, is beautiful and unspoiled! It is the most spectacular beach I've ever seen. The sand is white sugar sand. The water is crystal clear and at either end of the approximately mile and a half long Fernandez Bay Beach there are rock outcroppings that harbor beautiful fish for snorkelers. FBV has kayaks and paddle boards free for guests to use. The color of the water and the bay are just breathtaking!

The Food: The food at Fernandez Bay Village is just fine, but a little too expensive. We did eat there several times and they prepared a birthday cake for my fiancee one evening. We also used the bar from time to time, But, we also brought a cooler of fresh and frozen food and were very glad that we did. Cat Island will probably never be known for its food unless my finace's mother opens a restaurant there. But, again, we didn't got there for fine dining!

The Rest of the Island: Our travel to Cat Island just happened to occur during the biggest festival of the year, Regatta and homecoming. So, we decided to go to downtown New Bight for the festival on Friday night. The population of the Island is around 1600 and it seemed that most everyone was at the festival. This is an extremely friendly island the festival reflected that friendly nature. There was local food, a few local crafts and a band from Nassau. The band was quite good, playing a fusion of Reggae, Calypso, and Rake and Scrape. They were good by any standard and I think they were called the Bahamian Defense Force Band.

We also ventured to the south end of Cat Island with the help of Chris King, the principal of an elementary school, pastor and part-time taxi driver. Chris's wife, Olive, bakes coconut bread, a variety of desserts, and we also got baked Crab from Olive - this was by far the best food on the island! Chris and Olive are great people and you can should find Olive's bakery in New Bight. Chris is a great tour guide and driver and you can find he and his son, Danny, at C & O Taxi and Tour Services (242 342 3134). Chris took us by the Hermitage - we didn't have the time to hike up the hill to see the highest point in the Bahamas, but this is a place not to miss. We also went to the extreme southern end of the island to look at some land on which we might possibly build a home.

Things to take to Cat Island: Most of the accommodations at FBV have full but fairly minimal kitchens. We brought some fresh foods in a cooler, which turned out to be really great. There is also a market in New Bight and Donna, of FBV took us there a couple of times (Donna was just terrific to us and I"m pretty sure she is to everyone who visits FVB! THANKS DONNA!!). Snorkel gear (minimum: Masks and Snorkel - Finns are optional). We also brought games for both evenings inside and beach outside during the day. Lots of swim suits since nothing is worse than putting on a wet one. You don't really need a lot of clothing.

If any of you tripadvisor readers have any questions, please feel free to email me. I hope, if you're looking for a beautiful nature spot and you want to keep it that way, you go to Cat Island. We're going back ASAP.

If you are looking for a laid back vacation Fernandez Bay Village on Cat Island in the Bahamas is the place to be. The beach is on the leeward side of the island in a cove and the water is like a HUGE swimming pool. Kayak through the mangrove swamps to view birds, young sea turtles, baby sharks, etc. The villas and houses at Fernandez are quaint and nicely equipped with an extremely friendly and helpful staff (both Bahamian and American). The restaurant offers a breakfast and dinner buffet -- lobster, filet, traditional Bahamian food -- AMAZING! You won't find a tourist island, traffic, noisy nightlife here, so know that before you book.

This place is a paradise. The accomodations are awesome and rustic and beachy, steps from the ocean. The stretch of beach is like something out of a Corona commercial, and never had more than a half-dozen other folks on it. The staff was incredibly genuine, friendly, and helpful. We took two excursions with Mark -- an eco-tour of sea turtles, and fishing -- which were really reasonably priced and wonderful, and he was great with our three boys (ages 11, 8, and 7). We will never have that much fun fishing again for the rest of our lives.

Cat Island itself is sparsely populated and not at all touristy. You land on essentially an airstrip with a one-room airport. There's one main road that has been washed out by a lot of hurricanes over the years. There is little infrastructure, but the water is safe and drinkable, and the electricity seemed reliable while we were there. There are a couple of little grocery stores, and a few very authentic bars and restaurants. The monastary was lovely and easily hiked to from the road. We attended Catholic services on Sunday at a beautiful little church nearby.

Food at FBV was quite good, and breakfast and dinner are buffet-style. You can't beat the atmosphere. Every night there's a happy hour at a charming, friendly little bar and we made great friends with some of the other guests.

Our boys loved every minute. They swam and snorkled for hours, chased lizards and frogs, knocked coconuts off trees, and ate and slept like champs.

The rooms have kitchens, and it's a good idea to pack in some breakfast and sandwich supplies to save money.

Room Tip: All the accomodations are steps from the ocean and seem to have great views. We stayed in the Hibis...

Laudato si, mi Signore, per sora Luna e le stelle. This passage from the Canticle of the Sun is inscribed on a small plaque at the Hermitage atop Mt. Alvernia in Cat Island. It translates to "Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars." And oh what beautiful stars they are, while laying on the beach listening to the waves, with no other light but their twinkling glow...
Cat Island is magical and Fernandez Bay Village is the perfect place to experience it. After stepping off our Sky Bahamas flight we were met by a gentleman who welcomed us warmly and drove us the short distance to Fernandez Bay. Pam met us on the front steps and gave us a tour while he took our bags to our home for the week, Shane's Shack. Once we were shown to our room, we were checked in! Everything at the resort is so simple, absolutely no worries, completely stress free. Our cottage was beautiful, literally ten steps to the turquoise water and close enough to the clubhouse and tiki bar so that I could go get Irish cream for our morning coffee in my pajamas. Photos seriously do not do the surroundings justice, and the sand is so soft it's almost hard to walk in. We spent our days exploring the mangroves and puttering around in the sea kayaks. We hiked to the jumping rocks for a little adventure...so much fun! At night, a stroll and a few glasses of wine under more stars than I've ever seen. And the food, well it's just flat out amazing. Everything is incredibly fresh, and prepared simply to showcase the freshness. Try the grilled snapper sandwich for lunch, my husband loved it so much he had one every day!
Every review of Fernandez Bay Village will tell you, rightly so, how utterly stunning the beach is. They will will detail how great the accommodations are too. But the most amazing thing is the people. Everyone made it a priority to make sure we were having a wonderful time. Stacia made sure we were well fed each day. Kelly arranged a last minute car rental so that we could visit the Hermitage, a must do and worth every penny. It may just be the most peaceful place on earth. The true gems of Fernandez Bay are the Armbrister family. Pam and Tony not only welcomed us to the resort, they welcomed us into their home for dinner one night. They pride they have in the resort and the people of Cat Island is inspiring. Over one of the best meals we've ever had we made true friends that we can't wait to see again.
As much as I wanted to toss my passport in the ocean so I couldn't leave, we all too soon had to board our flight back to reality. Donna made sure our checkout was just as easy as check in. As I walked up the tarmac, my skin tanner, my hair blonder, my soul lighter, the only unfulfilled wish I had was for more time at this special place.

Room Tip: Each cottage is unique. From the bed in Shane Shack, all you see is the ocean!
