This is a beautiful hand wound functioning lighthouse. You can walk through this lighthouse on your own at your own pace. Climb the many stairs of the spiral staircase, stopping on each level to look at the views out each window. When you get to the top you are totally enclosed and can see out all of the windows 360*. I like this, I am afraid of heights. They also have the option of stepping outside and looking at the view. There is a net around the perimeter. The workings of the lighthouse are all visible and it is amazing watching it work. It is beautiful! I sure appreciated it a lot more when I would see it lit at night. this is a must see!

One of two remaining lighthouses using manually adjusted glass prisms! Gotta do the climb to see why this is such an important piece of Bahamian marine history. Too bad that the other two lighthouses were replaced so quickly! If travelling by boat, great area for mooring and there is a quaintness of the area that draws you back over and over! Great beaches on the Atlantic side of the island!

Marsh Harbour is the capital city of Abaco and offers a varied assortment of site seeing, diving, boating, restaurants which are located right on or near the waterfront and lodging-our favorite is Lofty Fig Villas. Meet Sid the owner and you will quickly understand why this is our favorite place to stay. Ferry's run on schedule each day from Marsh Harbour to the three barrier islands that protect Marsh Harbour. From the Lofty Fig Villas, it's and easy 30 minute scenic walk to the ferry to Elbow Cay and Hope Town, a quaint village on the island and our favorite of the three barrier islands. Visiting Hope Town is a great day trip. There are three must do's among others: tour the candy-striped, hand-wound lighthouse and climb the 101 steps to the top of the light house, probably the most recognizable landmark in the Abacos; take a walking trip through the streets of Hope Town to view the unique houses, the Wyannie Malone Museum, library, playground, gift ships, coffee shop, ice cream shops, deli, wine bar, bakery and climbing the hill to view the Atlantic on one side and the harbor on the other, and take a walk along the beach. Cars are not allowed in Hope Town, however, the five mile cay can be explored by walking, boat, bike or golf cart. You will find the food and drink available as interesting as the scenery. Plan on a full day. Albury's Ferry Service provides round trip tickets with boats leaving Marsh Harbour as early as 7:15 AM and returning as late as 6:30 PM. Wear comfortable walking shoes and relaxed clothing. Enjoy!

If you are staying on Elbow Cay, take a trip over to Hope Town and walk up in the Lighthouse. It is a fun activity to do, especially with kids. It is not very difficult, gives great views of the surrounding area, and should not be missed!

Hopetown Lighthouse has been operational for generations and still lights the harbor entrance nightly. It's a very interesting place to walk up the winding stairs and view the area. Too bad there is no museum in it to read about its history.
