A high light of our trip! We met Sam, a 2nd generation lighthouse
keeper. Sam was kind enough to take us on a evening tour while he lite the lighthouse. We entered the historical land mark & noticed everything was still original, it was beautifully polished & well kept. You climb 101 steps up a spiral stair case to a breath taking 360 degree view. We watched Sam as he cranked the 700pd weight to the top of the stairs case then climb inside the glass & light the kerosene, he then spun the revolving magnifying glass on mercury to make the light spin. It was an amazing experience to see. This committed man along with one other take great pride in keeping this original lighthouse going. They split their evenings & every 2 hours 365 days a year take the 101 steps to the top to crank up the 700 pound weights & spin the magnify glass to keep the lighthouse going. It truly is a remarkable experience not only to see but to meet such a dedicated man with so much pride.
