Taino Beach Resort & Clubs
Reviewed March 14, 2013

We spent one week at the Taino Beach in Feb 2013 and enjoyed it very much. The staff was very helpful, our studio was older but large and had everything we needed. The pool was excellent and was kept clean. There was a water slide, outside bar under the water side and beautiful beach. We met a lot of great people vacationing there and was easy to get around. Ther offerd a van to the huge modern grocery store which was great (cost $3 for two of us). There is a ferry a couple minutes walk down the road which took us to Port of Lucaya which was excellent...shopping, dinning, bars, etc. We would return to Taino next time we are in the Bahamas.

Room Tip: The newer condos near the main lobby were 10 times better than the older ones.

I was not excited about staying a week in the Bahamas because my only experience was in Nassau and it was not a good one. But Grand Bahama was very friendly and I felt safe everywhere. I did not get the feeling that they were trying to seperate me from my money every minute like some resort areas.

We had a one bedroom at Taino Beach. We booked the Ocean but were put in the Coral instead. Actually the buildings are all attached, just built on at different times and I think the Coral rooms are a little larger. We had a balcony that overlooked the pool and we had no trouble accessing WiFi in our room. The one bedroom actually has two queens, one in each room, two baths and two kitchens, one full and one partial. The two rooms have a door with a lock in between so it would be convenient for two couples.

The room decor was a little dated. What wasn't covered with pink tile or painted pink had mirrors on it. Oh yes, the toilet and sinks were dark green. GREEN? The walkin shower had a glass block wall which would be embarassing if someone other than your husband was there when you showered. All in all the layout served us well for a week and we enjoyed our stay.

The outside looked newly painted and the doors and windows had been recently replaced. The grounds were well maintained and all the staff was very polite. The beach was large, clean and about 30 yards from our unit. There were plenty of beach lounges and about eight thatched shaded umbrellas for shade. They have a watersport rental and a restaurant with a lovely view of the beach.

Now, what makes this resort special is the pool. It is truly lovely. There is a lazy river running around an island that houses a water slide. A waterfall, caves with water jets, bridges, shallow sloped beach area for young children and a swim up bar are all there. Very enjoyable if the sun is out. The pool is not heated so when the temp drops outside the water is cold.

We rented a car because we like our freedom but it would not be necessary. There is a water taxi that will take you to the Port Lacaya Market Place. Here there are restaurants in every price range, liquour stores, cigar and variety store. We stopped at the Subway there to pickup subs for our picnic lunch on Barbary Beach. The resort has a shuttle that will take you on a grocery run twice a week also. They do offer activities such as wine and cheese cruise, island tour etc.

The only thing during our stay that was irritating was that three nights a week they bussed in people from other resorts and cruise ships for dinner on the beach and a bonfire. It would get quite noisy and on those nights the restaurant seating was limited to inside because of their party on the restaurant deck.

Room Tip: Request a balcony on either the second or third floor. Do not expect an ocean view from the Ocean u...

The location of the Resort is really great.
The quality of the service in the lobby is really poor...
Pool has cold water....
Beach is wonderful....
Wi-Fi is not stable.... only in the sales area is good.
Room are.only one studio or double room...Marlin seems to be renewed but rooms are not well maintained... if you call for support about room problems they don't resolve (e.g. lights not working)

Very depressing stay. The studio had no natural light - we had to use electric lights all
the time. I complained serveral times but nothing was done to move us. and the place did not appear to be full. No balcony nor patio. No outlook at all, one could not tell whether the sun was shining or it was raining.
I dare say that had we had a room with a balcony (ie one bedroomed) it would have been fine.
Cooking smells came through from the one bed room that backed ours - there is an adjoining door. Everyone had to roll their suitcases along the passage by our front door it was a general thoroughfare.

The room jacuzzi was dangerous to use. One could not reach the plug from the floor and there were no hand rails. However there was a separate shower in the bathroom. I don't know whether rubber bathmats were available but the tiled floor was quite slippery - be aware older guests.

Our whole stay was marred by the terrible room. We would probably have been content otherwise but getting ones own breakfast in a dingey room is not acceptable.

The pool in February was bracing while the hot tub was too hot.

I was so looking forward to this holiday our first long break for several years but the room ruined everything especially as the weather was not particuarly good the first days. I enjoyed one really lovely sunny relaxing day on the quiet beach.

Room Tip: DO NOT TAKE A STUDIO if you want sunlight

Dear Dark Room,
Thanks for your detailed posting. We appreciate the information you provided – and we really appreciate the format that you delivered it. It’s what we need to know to improve and its not just a “rant”. Thank you for that!
The lights in some of the units are not as bright as we would prefer. The transition to LED lighting has been a learning experience with this new-ish lighting technology. The Electricity on many island countries has spikes and is hard on appliances and bulbs. Thankfully, LED lighting is a significant money saver. We will be moving the bulbs to locations that are more suited to appropriate lighting expectations going forward.

Tubs and Marble Tiles continue to be tricky when wet. We have bath mats supplied, but will have more available to the Tub areas.

Thankfully, even though its winter, you reported a great beach experience!
We thank you again for your postings, and we hope to host a future visit to Grand Bahama!

I can't even say how many times we've stayed at this resort. It's not perfect, but what place is. There's lots of room for everyone. Tell them whether you want a view or not. The rooms with a view have no bathtub if that matters to you. The pool and beach are great. You're in the Bahamas; life is slow and you need to adjust. I'll be back again.

We stayed at the Marlin for a week in January. The unit we had was newly renovated, and very clean. It had a nice kitchenette (no oven) and all the items you would need for cooking.
Some suggestions:
1. Know that a studio (also called efficiency here ) does not have a balcony. Because the island is so quiet, and not much was going on at night, a balcony would have been very nice to have. You will need a one or two bedroom to get a balcony. The two bedroom is actually the door opened between the studio and one bedroom. so with a 2 bedroom you get 2 kitchen areas...great when booking with another family.
2. RENT A CAR. It was very reasonable (350 for the week, Hertz) and driving on the island, although on the left, was very easy. We were able to explore parts of the island we would not have been able to because we had one. Do not worry about the left side driving. Speed limits are very low (30 for trucks, 45 max for cars on the "highway") and there is hardly any traffic. It is an island with a very low population, so not so many cars. Also, all main roads are divided with a median, and the roundabouts easy to maneuver.
3. Visit Gold Rock Beach. I have been to many beautiful beaches, including ones in Hawaii, but this one is the best! You have to visit it at low tide. We were the only ones there...miles of beautiful, deserted beaches. It is across the street from Lucaya National Park. From there we continued to the end of the island and visited many other beautiful beaches. Again, we were the only one at every beach we went to. Collected conch shells, and relaxed.
4. Pack food in your suitcase. You will be in your bathing suit all day, so do not overpack clothes. We packed a small, collapsable cooler to carry lunches in for our day trips and it paid off. We brought tuna, sandwich rounds, crackers, peanut butter and jelly (packed into the cooler) and other snacks.
5. Pack your GPS. Ours worked on the island, and brought us to many wonderful places. Salomon's was the best place to buy groceries.
6. Bring enough reading materials. There is NO PLACE to buy books. The 2 "bookstores" they had on the island had a total of 30 books, and were mainly for student supplies.
7.Do not waste your time going to the International Marketplace. About 6 vendors were open, and the whole place was in disrepair. Go to the Lucaya Marketplace instead. Drove there every night for dinner...another reason to have a car. Saved on taking the water taxi.
8. Easy to get clean towels...the housekeeping room is open several hours a day so you can exchange linens. (no room service or daily cleaning for condos)
9. RENT A CAR..again , do not be a slave to the tours...we saved so much money visiting places on our own, and did it on our own timeline.
10. You can walk the beach to Junkaroo Beach. Tony Macaroni's is there....heard food is great, but got there late and it was packed so we did not eat there.
11. If you go with children , pack a small inner tube for each of them. There was only 3 at the pool, and no problem getting one, but also no children there. If children were there, it would have been a problem.
1.2 You can purchase bread and snacks and other food items across the street at Flamingo Bay Hotel.

Would highly recommend the Marlin! Lots of shade, never had to look for beach chair, and friendly staff.

We've visited this place on 3 or 4 occasions over the past few years. We'd definitely go back and have been back so it's a solid 4. We've stayed here multiple times, as a couple and with the whole family (3 young kids). We've stayed in the Coral and the Marlin. Marlin is clean definitely more modern, the Coral is clean, just dated decor, nothing that would get in the way of enjoying this beautiful part of the world. The resort and pool are clean. We've always enjoyed our experience here.
We come to enjoy the beaches and do just that. I prefer having fresh towels each day and the bed made, but know they don't offer that here so it wasn't a surprise this time. Our kids met some friends and had a blast playing with them at the pool. I love the beach being so close and the pool that was very warm and clean, great for young kids and parent's who want to float on the lazy river.
I come to the beach/Bahama's to put my phone away, turn off the computer, put my feet in the warm sand and soak up the sun. Each time I have come to the Bahama's I have been grateful for the experience and have always been delightfully surprised by the kind, kind Bahamian people. We love the Bahamanian people!!! We've stayed in better places and worse places. Taino is a great place for the money we paid. Things to be grateful for...
-The Water is so warm you can play in it for hours and get out and back in and never feel cold
-The weather is usually perfect
-The bonfire is every night, hasn't always been the case
-The pool is clean and the slide and lazy river were running
-The rooms were clean when we arrived
-This time we were able to get towels when we went to the laundry room
-Great location (close to: Port Lucaya, fish fry - love the conch fritters, on Wed's eve's, ferry - we rent a car from Brad's car rental thanks Gina, JT's on the beach and the freshly cracked coconut, Tony Macaroni's - amazing food, and most importantly close to GOLD ROCK BEACH!!!)
-Taino is a very nice beach to have right out the door
-The resort is always painted well, sounds weird but ocean weather can be very hard on buildings and they do a wonderful job of keeping the buildings brightly painted and looking nice.
-We called ahead to have a crib reserved for our young one and they had it waiting in the room when we got there.
Area's for improvement:
-Allow check-in's before 4pm and a later check out. With that said, the bell hop Kenny is great take care of the man.
-Deliver new towels and clean the rooms daily for those who opt in. The better things are taken care of the longer they last.
-The corners of the bed (Marlin and Coral) stick out past the mattress, right at your shins, and we always come home with bruises from bumping our shins while walking around the bed. Silly I know but I'd like to saw the corners off those beds :)
Like I said I gave this a 4 only because of the areas of improvement and we have stayed in places that are "nicer". However, the all around deal... including the Bahamian people, gorgeous beaches and the resulting great memories with the whole family makes the trip always worth it. Wish I was still there. Oh and if you do nothing else, go to Gold Rock beach at low tide, hike the 5 mins into it, take a camera and you'll see the most beautiful beach you'll probably ever see. Lay down in the shallow water and feel the stress disappear (see pictures attached). Some of the Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed here. I travel half way across the U.S. just for this beach. If the tide is right catch a low tide at sunset. WOW! Or during the day, or anytime just go to GRB!!!!!
