Grand Lucayan, Bahamas
Ranked #4 of 14 Hotels in Freeport
Reviewed January 26, 2013

We recently stayed at the Grand Lucayan after moving from another hotel that was not up to our expectations (see other review). Our vacation took a dramatic turn for the better once we checked into the Grand Lucayan. The resort, staff, accommodations and environment were excellent!

We stayed at the resort over the New Years week and attended the hotel party. It was fantastic - amazing food, wonderful band to dance the night away and a very good fireworks show. During our stay we also had the opportunity to dine at Churchills and China Beach. All of us loved Churchills - great service, fine dining.

The pool and beach area at the Grand Lucayan are lovely. It s very ckean, there were always empty lounge chairs to use, and drink/food service is available poolside. The pool bar makes outstanding Piña Colada's.

All of used the gym daily. It is one of the better hotel gyms that I have experienced. We also took advantage of the fitness classes offered. The yoga and Pilates classes were terrific.

We will return to the Grand Lucayan.

My fiance and I stayed here for four nights last week, and had a great time. The grounds are beautiful and spotless. The resort beach stretches on for a mile, and you can walk miles beyond that, with very little traffic and tons of serenity and gorgeous beaches. We found the front desk extremely friendly and accommodating, especially Megan. The prices on-site for food and drinks were reasonable, and were pleased with all of the mixed drinks we had on-site.

If you are the type who loves a place with lots of adventure options, then this place is probably not for you. We took a banana boat ride around the island, which was fun, and there are some para-sailing/jet ski/dolphin-experience options, but that's about it.

One of the best plusses about this resort is the market right across the street, which has some really good restaurants, plus vendors and shops. We were there for one reason or another pretty much every day. I highly recommend Cappucino's, an Italian restaurant (yes, in the Bahamas) that was absolutely outstanding, and can also recommend Cafe Breeze for Bahamian food and Agave for happy hour margaritas. We ate most of our meals at the market, and only stayed on-site for the Breakfast buffet, which was tasty and plentiful, and the Wednesday fish fry, which had solid food and was a fun time.

Finally, there is a Casino right on the premises. It's one of the best "resort" casinos I have seen, and has a poker room, if you're into that.

Be warned that if you go during the off-season, a good portion of the resort will be closed down (meaning, some closed restaurants, deserted pools, and empty buildings), but that isn't as bad as it sounds, as the place is enormous, and the staff does a good job of making the place feel more inhabited than it actually is.

All in all, if you are looking for a bustling, adventure filled experience, look elsewhere. For some serious relaxation and rejuvenation with some very solid food and shopping options (mostly across the street), the Grand Lucayan is an excellent choice

I went there with a friend in April 2012. It was with a package deal for a cruise. We loved the hotel and the atmosphere outside. They reataurants are a little pricey. The beach is beautiful and they have little activities available on site or close to. The only thing is that they charge a certain amount on your credit card and then refund you. But guess what, I live in Canada, so when they refund me the amount wich was the same but the fees that MasterCard charges and the difference from Us to Can I lost 20$ for nothing. I was not happy at all with that! Other than that, this hotel is awesome for relaxing and enjoying the sun and the clear water. Rooms are great, they all have a balcony and the space inside is very decent. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Pick a room in front of the water. The views are incredible.

We enjoyed our short stay at the Grand Lucayan. We did a two-day getaway and it was perfect. The room was nicely appointed, the hotel staff were helpful and professional. We loved the beautiful white sandy beach. the hammocks, music and atmosphere. We enjoyed the short walk to the Port Lucaya Market place which was filled with shops of all kinds from the high end to the inexpensive and many good restaurants. It was a lovely experience all around.

Hello maria f,
Thank you for taking the time to rate us on TripAdvsior. Thank you for bringing your concers to our attention. We apologize for not meeting your expectations during your stay with us.
In reference to the fees, I have enclosed the below to explain what the resort fees, and service charges cover at our resort:
The resort & service fees are together $17 per day - and include (as detailed below):

-- Resort Fee :$9.00 per person/per day - covers:
Wi-Fi
In room coffee/bottled water
Lounges/towels poolside
Access to Spa and Fitness Center- 24,000 sf.
All Resort activities, use of the spa & fitness center
Junkanoo Band on weekends
Hotel Parking
Nightly turndown service
$10 Casino Match Play

--Service Charge $8.00 per person/per day covers Housekeeping, bellman and staff.
I hope this helps to explain the fees that you inquired about. Many other resorts charge considerably more for their resort services and fees and/or their amenities or charge for just about everything. have you had a chance to explore our grounds? we have 3 beautiful pools, one of which is very serene and quiet, our daily resort activities complimentary to all guests and range from yoga & pilates to beach volleyball, our 24,000 sq. ft of Sense Spa & Fitness center and our many dining outlets and bars on property. Our Guest Services can help you plan excursions such as sight seeing tours, swimming with the dolphins, jeep safari and many more. We have many activities to keep Guests occupied. We are truly sorry that we did not meet your expectations during your stay with us.

Came back again this year to the Grand Lucayan. Just as good as the last time. It is the only place to stay on the island because the views from the oceanfront rooms are fabulous. But make sure you are 6 floors up or higher. The grounds are meticulous. The breakfast Willy Broadleaf was very good. But most of the time we went across the street to the Marketplace. So many great restaurants and bars. Pieces is the best and Le Med was terrific. I have to say a shout out to my buddy Paul at The Corner Bar. A fun little place to have a drink while people watching. The location is terrific. The weather was a little windy during the end of December but it did ease off after a few days but that is something to consider if you are going there in December. Made it back to the prettiest beach....Gold Rock Beach. But just be careful who you choose to take you there. Grand Bahamas Adventures (I think that was the name) took us in there Jeep Tour. Lot's of fun and you get to see much more of the island than the other tour guide. Horseback riding in the ocean is loads of fun too.

The only downfall are the extra charges for taxes that you get hit up with per day. It does add up so make sure you know you will get extra taxes when you checkout. The energy charge was $10/day alone. Most of those are taxes by the government.

1 more thing....The cruise ships drop off people to check in at 11am but the hotel check in is not until 3pm. These people were NOT happy about that at all. From what I understand, this happens every week and the cruise ships do NOT tell the people that they can't check in until 3pm. I really felt bad for the staff. It's not their fault and the crowd was very rude to the manager and front desk help. So if you are taking a cruise, now you know...You can't get your room until 3pm.

The island is so beautiful. Most of the people are very nice. I just love this place and will be back again.

Room Tip: Ocean view is a must. Get a room 6 floors and above.

Just spent a week at probably the most beautiful resort on Freeport. We found this place during a black Friday sale after Thanksgiving and got a ocean view king for $99 a night. We were aware of the "extra" fees they charge so it was not a surprise when the final bill came. The fees each day include a resort fee of $18, that includes wi-fi, beach/pool towels, non-motorized sports, use of the private beach, and gym. A service charge of $16 which I heard was for room service and I'm not sure what else. Energy surcharge of $10, tourism levy of about $8, and government tax of $5. When I added this up I believe it was an additional $57 each day you need tto budget for. I simply just considered that I paid about $157 a day for the room, which is still a decent deal.

The people at the resort are very nice and hospitable. Everyone we passed greeted us in one way or another. The grounds of the resort are amazing and it is nice to have a private beach. There was plenty of empty lounge chairs at the pool and the beach, but that could be because it was off season. They have several restaurants on the property to try but they were pretty pricey so we chose to mostly dine in Port Lucayan where you can find many restaurants with more reasonably priced menus. There is a very nice looking and large gym and lap lane with nice locker rooms to use but they are located at one end of the resort which was a walk from our hotel room. They also have a company on-site that offers beach activities such as jet skis, para-sailing, banana boat rides, boat tours, etc.

It was mostly cloudy during our time here in January so that was a bummer. I was hoping for more sunny weather but that is not a fault of the resort. The decor of the room is tropical 80's, outdated but comfortable. They did install new 42" flat screens during our stay, which was a nice upgrade. The maid was very personable and nice, making us some towel animals several nights we were there. The pool was beautiful but colder than the ocean. Good thing there was a hot tub for us to use. There was a pool bar but we never tried it so can't comment on how good it was. Cruise ships frequently stop here and you will see many people around the pool area from the cruise ship and well as some on the beach. The staff do try and keep them on one side of the beach and the resort guests on another.

All in all a nice resort to be at for the right price. Don't forget to add in the "extra" fees when you book so you are not surprised at the end when the final bills comes.

Room Tip: High room facing the ocean would be best.
