“Viva Wyndham Fortuna, Freeport, Grand Bahamas”
Reviewed May 5, 2014

The resort itself was not what we are accustomed to having. The bars are lacking and the food on the beach is limited to hamburgers and hot dogs. Having said this, the resort is less crowded and the beach is beautiful! If you walk up and down the beach, chances are you will be alone. The food is okay and the people are lovely. The resort is supposed to close for a while to be upgraded. There is a dive shop there and the dive boat leaves daily from the beach on the resort. If you are looking to go to a less crowded resort and the bar is not a big part of your agenda, this could work for you.

Room Tip: Try for an ocean view , but the real ocean view room are limited.

Great beach is only real positive.
Rooms dusty and dirty, DIY terrible cant even put anything on the beside tables because they were so wonky, the tvs weren't even put up straight and this was one of the newly renovated rooms! The service was disgusting everyday there were queues 10-15 deep with herds of people waiting to check in or out, completely avoidable but it seems to take 3 people to do one task and they move soooo slow, just don't seem to care at all, a general lack of courtesy and manners....I wish I could say it was a one off. There was only one member of staff who smiled and was able to work at pace(the lady who cooked the burgers and hotdogs at lunch) and she stood out for that reason. Such a shame as I have family on this island, but I won't be staying there anytime soon! The staff need some serious training and need to learn that it doesn't hurt to smile or apologise or try to help when the bell boy loses your bags( this wasn't just us either).
The same horrible dry bland food everyday
P.s don't stay here unless you want to listen to the disco EVERY NIGHT until 2 am!!!!!

Room Tip: I don't believe there is one, sorry

I have just returned from this respire with my wife and 2 children (aged 12 and 10). Just before we went there were a few reviews posted on this resort that made me very concerned about what we were hoping to experience. However, we decided to continue with the trip as we got such a good deal and it was the Bahamas after all. Here's what we found:

Room
We had upgraded to an Ocean Front in the Bimini section - it was only $150 to do so, and meant that we woke up to a stunning view of an amazing beach and beautiful turquoise blue ocean every day. The room was fine with 2 queen beds. Everything worked and although the fridge wasn't stocked, the room suited our purposes very well. The air conditioning was excellent, the shower large and the hot water plentiful - we never ran out although you did have to leave it running for a few minutes to get the temperature right. The rooms were clean, and housekeeping cleaned it every day and did a pretty good job of it.

Food
The buffet was very good, the food was well cooked and there was always enough there to stop us going hungry. There were a number of things that were in the buffet every day, but there was still a fair choice. The Chinese restaurant (Bamboo) wasn't great, but the Italian was surprisingly very good, make sure you go. The late night pizza bar has been rightly praised in a number of reviews - my only negative comment on this is that it would have been fantastic if they had relocated it to the beachfront. Talking of which, the beachfront bar was always available to daytime snacks, although it was mainly fried food. Our biggest negative on ten food side was ten lack of ice cream, which our kids were looking forward to !

Location
This was stunning. The hotel is a smaller hotel (274 rooms) which suited us. We were told that it was one of the earlier hotels to be built so they picked the best location. This all makes sense, it is an older hotel but the section of the beach it is on did look better than most of the other places we saw, and there was a reef you could snorkel out to (with kids) and see plenty of small, large and colourful fish - we even saw a stingray there.

Entertainment
The entertainment staff did pretty well. There was much to do during the day and Mama Inma and Laura will keep you and your children entertained if you choose to join in. Snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing, basketball, soccer, volleyball etc are all free, and so is trapeze, which the kids loved ! The nighttime entertainment was on every night but was a bit amateur - the singing was so obviously mimed.

Staff
As mentioned the entertainment staff were very good. The bar staff were mainly helpful and always willing to mix you a rum runner or Bahama Mama, and if you are friendly to them, they are friendly back. Many guests treat them like slaves so that would perhaps explain some of the comments posted on here, but my experience was good.

Timeshare
They do try to sell you Viva Wyndham timeshares, but they are fine if you don't want to attend their sessions (there are plenty of gifts if you do). We did meet someone that bought the package - they paid $7700 for a 15 year deal that allows you to stay at the hotels in Bahamas, Mexico and Dominican. I think this may have been accommodation only though - you have to pay more for the all inclusive option.

Overall
We got a great deal for our trip and after reading some of the negative comments on here we were very apprehensive about going. Don't be - it is an older hotel, and that is the reason II have only given it 4 out of 5. In terms of value for money it's a clear 5. Don't go expecting it to be the most luxurious hotel that you will have ever stayed at, because it isn't. If you go wanted a great relaxing time in a beautiful location and can overlook the fact that where the tiling on the walkways have been patched the colour might not be exact, then you too will have a great time. This is a great little spot in an amazing place with really friendly staff. There are cute little lizards and geckos and many little bugs that are a cross between a work and a centipede (housekeeping sweep these up every day but they are around).

Would I go back ? Well I'm sitting here typing this wishing I was still there, so work that one out for yourselves !

I travelled here with my husband and two children ages 14 and 11. We stayed one week and flew with Sunwing from Canada. We went there with very low expectations because of all of the negative reviews that I had read! I was very nervous not knowing what it would be like. We booked it anyway because the price was very affordable for the Bahamas. We were pleasantly surprised that all of the bad reviews made no sense. The hotel is smaller (275 rooms) but that was great for our children and peace of mind. It was always very clean. The pool is smaller, but nice and spacious and always activities going on pool-side. I took step aerobics, water aerobics, zumba and dance lessons. My daughter played in the kids water soccer tournaments and bingo by the pool. There were tons of activities to do on site for free! My son played paintball (which he loved!), we went kayaking, snorkelling, paddle-boarding, catamaran, windsurfing, played tennis, used the gym, ping pong, pool table, trapeze lessons and bicycles!!
The beach was gorgeous! Beautiful turqouise water and white soft sand. We even saw a sting ray one day! On the beach, there is a grill and bar, which we ate at often. The burgers, hot dogs, fries and chicken were all very tasty!
You can walk both ways down the beach for a couple of kilometers. There is a local bar/restaurant called The Sand Bar to the right if you would like to get off the resort.
The room we had was very nice and clean with a flat screen T.V. (lots of channels). I think it was one of their remodeled rooms which I had asked for. We had a partial ocean view without paying the extra fees for it. The maids came in every day to change the towels and we had plenty of toilet paper! I do not understand the bad reviews! Some people are VERY picky!1 It is not a 5 star resort, but definitely a 3 and a half star!
The animation team does such a great job! They work at everything all day and all night!
Everyone was very nice and polite to us as we were to them!
We went on the glass bottom boat excursion which was interesting! We fed the sharks and saw lots of fish. We also took the bicycles out one day and biked to Taino Beach and then went into Port Lucaya Marketplace. Choose your bikes wisely, make sure the chains are in working order.
We went to the local fish fry at Smith Point on Wednesday evening. The taxi was 21$ each way and the food was 12-15$ a plate. We wanted to experience the local cuisine, so we had fun! We ate the conch fritters which we all enjoyed. (4 for 1$)
I am a runner and felt very safe running on the roads. The locals were all out running or walking as well. I would leave around 6:30 am every morning. I ran the beach once, but it only gave me 7km and that was running in both directions back and forth.
The buffet food was the only thing that we got tired of. The food was tasty compared to Cuba, but the selections/choices were limited and repetitive. We did enjoy the Italian a la carte restaurant! The Asian restaurant was also better than the buffet.
We had a great time at the Viva Wyndham, with the beautiful beach and all of the free activites we could not complain!!

The staff was great but the accommodations were mediocre.

Bar tending was iffy at best.

Once I didn't buy into the timeshare (which I am already a member), we were ignored.

The Wyndham location was remote.

They did have activities for kids. Other than that ... hmm

Room Tip: The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

I do not recommand this hotel at all, rooms are very dirty and the food is about the same every day. We foud the staffs rude, except for the cleaning lady. All the poeple we met were complaining, we were counting days to go back home, the only positive thing i have to say was the weather and the nice beach.
