“Best beach bar on Grand Bahama!”
Reviewed January 31, 2014

This is THE place to go if you want to experience the real Grand Bahama. The setting; right on the most beautiful deserted beach, is spectacular. The food is wonderful (especially the cracked conch and the ribs - in Doris' famous bbq sauce). But, its the warmth of welcome that really sets this place apart. Captain Vick and Doris make this the most friendly and relaxed venue on the island. Great hosts, great food, great bar, great setting - cannot be beaten!!!

“Awesome Place Tucked Away”
Reviewed January 27, 2014

I did a little research online before we left and found a number of people suggesting this place. We rented a car at the cruise terminal in Freeport and I asked the person renting us the car where he recommended we eat near Lucayan National Park. He ended up recommending the same place I found online, Diamond Sunrise run by Doris (sometimes called Doris's Place).

The restaurant was not on the main road, but there were a few signs in the Lucayan National Park and High Rock area that pointed us in the right direction. There is not much else near the park and we were glad to find the place when we did. We got there around 11am and they were open, with only a few people in the internet café area attached to the restaurant. It took around 40 minutes to get there from the cruise terminal in Freeport.

Let me say that the staff, including Doris was friendly and inviting, but we understood that we were on "island time" and the food and drinks took a little longer than the average restaurant one is used to back in the states. The food and drinks were made from scratch, by hand for the most part. I read a lot of reviews concerning how long something took on some island somewhere. Again, once you arrive on any particular island or beach location, be prepared for things to take a little (or a lot) longer than you are accustomed to. If you are in a hurry, make sure you tell whoever is serving you and perhaps you service will be a little more prompt.

We were not in any such hurry and relaxed and enjoyed our drinks and incredible food. The conch fritters were perhaps the best I have ever had and the cracked conch burger was light and fluffy and incredible. There are a number of items on the menu that are fried (which is typical in the Bahamas), but the batter was light and not greasy. The food prices were very reasonable and the drink prices were on par with the rest of the island. It was a bit chilly and windy outside, so we ate inside before taking to the beach. The view from the patio could not be beat with an amazing beach attached.

After lunch we walked along the beautiful beach and each couple found a rock to write their names on to put in Doris' travel cabinet on the bar. We enjoyed sifting through the soft, powdery sand for the perfect rock. Travelers from all over have done the same thing for years. There are dozens of rocks and shells that travelers have inscribed and left, as a memento, in hopes of one day returning.

If you are on the island and can make it to Diamonds Sunrise, please stop by. You are sure to be very satisfied with a meal here. We have found that some of the most out-of-the-way places that are the hardest to get to, are the most rewarding.

“Doris' Diamond Sunrise”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

We were told we had to eat at Doris'. They definitely had the best conch fritters on the island. However, they were a little dirty and flies were everywhere, cutting down on the comfort of the location. The bathrooms were also a little scary.

The waitstaff was friendly, but the food took forever. It was a 1 hour wait for grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. They did comp us the conch fritters though, attesting to the great nature of the staff.

We personally enjoyed Bishop's Beach Bar right next door more for the atmosphere and ambiance.

“Best on the East End of Grand Bahama Island”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

We stayed in Pelican Point for a week. Bahama John's was closed for the week (maybe permanently?) so our only options for food were Zelma's, Bishops and Doris's/Diamond Sunrise. Zelma's was good, but Doris's was our favorite. We ate dinner three times during our stay. Bishops is right next door but I would not recommend a visit there.

-The conch fritters (only $3 for 12!) and conch burger were great.
-The "fish fingers" were very fresh and perfectly fried without being greasy.
-The ribs were a little lean but had a great sauce.
-The wings were really good, although were really just fried chicken.
-Make sure to ask for some of their goat chili hot sauce.
-They take credit card but there's a $30 minimum and they charge a fee.

Victor took great care of us every meal. Only complaint is most everything is fried, like every where on the island. I wish they'd buy a grill. Grilled grouper or snapper would have been perfect. Also wish they offered dessert because there is nothing else to be found in that area of the island.

“Great food & service in perfect location”
Reviewed December 6, 2011

We have previously visited the adjacent restaurant Bishop's, but this time decided to give Diamond Sunrise a try (note it is also called Doris's Place on the local signs). We are very glad we did. Service was good, friendly and informative. The fried snapper with chips was very tasty with the fish coated in a spicy flour before frying so it was full of flavour. The conch fritters were the best we have had so far on the island.

The setting of the restaurant is perfect, right on the beach with part of the deck area covered and shade is important on hot days, but of course being right on the beach you benefit from the cooling sea breeze.
