After reading a TON of reviews, my husband and I booked 3 nights at the Reef, and 3 nights at the Riu (see my other review on Riu). I wish we’d booked all 6 nights at the Reef! From check-in to check out, and even when we visited the casino and spa AFTER we’d checked out of the Reef, the customer service was amazing. Every person that worked at Atlantis said “good afternoon” and was beyond helpful.

We also really enjoyed the water park, the casino, and all the lagoons and aquarium.

My advice:

Bring snacks. We took a carry-on of Pringles, peanut butter crackers, cookies, breakfast bars, etc. This cut down on our spending in a huge way. We had a meal at the more casual restaurant or Aquaventure “snack bar” once a day - $35 for two burgers and fries.

Stop at the grocery for water/drinks and at the liquor store. We didn’t even buy drinks during our stay, but on the menus we saw drinks run around $10 each. We saved a lot making our own cocktails.

Negotiate the cab fare BEFORE you get in! We learned this the hard way. The sign said $9 to get anywhere on Paradise Island, and the driver charged us $15.

Use the shuttle! Also learned this the hard way. Atlantis is HUGE. :)

If you have them, use your freebies! We got a “taste of Atlantis” pass that included some drinks/appetizers at a few of the restaurants. I thought it would be useless. Nope! We got 2 margaritas (small, but free) at Mesa Grill, and a sake/sushi sampler ($40 value, and delicious) at Nobu.

Bottom line – expensive? Yes. But worth it. The service, grounds, beach – everything was amazing. If you want a cheap vacation...go to Mexico.

This was our second visit to the Reef at Atlantis and it was even better this time. The staff were gracious and very accomodating. We were celebrating our 25th Anniversary and teh concierge and hotel manager went out of their way to make it special sending us chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of wine. The proximity to a private beach is one of the high points to this resort. The Atlantis resort itself has something for everyone from an amazing spa - the best I've been to and I've been to several; water slides, scenery, and multiple restaurants within walking distance or easily reachable by air conditioned shuttles.

The food is expensive as would be expected at any resort. Best tip: stop at a grocery store on your way to the Resort from the Airport, it's usually an extra $10 and well worth it. Buy lots of water and wear comfortable shoes.

Room Tip: Many housing options - we choose a Junior suite in the Reef which afforded us a refrigerator, microw...

We have been to Atlantis a few times and have stayed at both the Cove and the Reef. We love Atlantis because of the great food and the huge lazy river that runs through the property. Its a great place to be if you have a lot of cash to spend... It is way over priced and there are many hidden costs that you discover at checkout. The food is great and the rooms are very comfortable, but the service is horrible. They don't treat you well at all. It's family friendly and there are many activities right on the resort. They have huge water parks for kids, many water slides, a large aquarium, and you can swim with the dolphins (expensive) without having to venture off the resort. For the adults they have a big casino, a night club, and an adult pool. It's worth a visit, but be prepared to spend a lot of money.

I had heard and read several differing opinions prior to my stay here and am glad that I chose to take my family here for vacation. I do agree, Everything here is quite pricey, but for cleanliness, security and access to STUNNING Caribbean beaches, I say it's worth it. The staff was courteous and attentive without being overbearing. They were Wonderful and polite with my young children. The Bahamian people are proud of their islands and this is reflected in their attitudes; if you engage any one of the employees in casual conversation, you may learn about history, culture and local attractions. It's refreshing.
To save money, you can always order food prior to your arrival from the online grocery service. This is pricey too but less so than going to a restaurant for every meal. Also, Starbucks in the lobby offers several decent continental breakfast options.
I like that the Reef and Cove are a little removed from the other hotels which can get congested during the day. Another benefit to having the kitchen is you only have to go to the other hotels at night for dinner since the shuttle ride can be time consuming and the walk a little lengthy. Be sure to make dinner reservations as far in advance as possible if you have somewhere you really want to try.
Just a request from one tourist to another...if you decide to enjoy your Starbucks on the beach PLEASE throw your green straws in the trash can, not on the beach. I would hate for litter to destroy this beautiful place.

Room Tip: If available request a room on the higher floors.

We recently traveled to the Atlantis Reef resort from 8/23-8/27 with age ranges from 4-45. And yes, we traveled during hurricane Issac! The plane ride was smooth but when we landed there was a lot of construction due to the new airport. Although the plane de-boarded in the new terminal, be prepared for a 15 minute walk to get to the Nassau customs which is located in the old airport building! The line for customs was poorly organized, with only a few lines operating… so add another 30minutes wait! We brought carry on which I truly believe helps to expedite any travel. Once we left the airport it was sooo easy to catch a cab. It was about $38. The cab ride was long due to rush hour traffic (noon). During our car ride we saw the new resort that they are building on cable beach which will be fantastic and operating at the start of 2014.
We arrived at the Reef about 40 minutes later. The hotel grounds were immaculate! They had an ultra chic lobby, manicured grounds with palm trees and gorgeous beaches with clear ocean water . There was even soft jazz playing from the hidden speakers in the courtyard. The elevator was prompt and they have free washer and dryers on the second floor. I felt the staff at the Reef was very professional and helpful. We initially had a room with a king size bed and pull out sofa instead of the 2 queen beds. By the second day it was promptly changed with an oceanfront view as well. I would advise that guests use their manners!!!! The staff works very hard and would appreciate a traveler’s “thank you” and some pleasantries instead of just demanding their needs. The room was beautiful with modern décor, comfortable beds, flat screen TVs and a refrigerator. My only complaint is the bathroom had a somewhat sheer glass window facing the bedroom. The glass window can be opened on both sides as well. It can be uncomfortable changing …because guests can see your outlined siloette if you stand in the window path- so it’s best to be out of that view. Also be aware of FEES! The room has a second refrigerator stocked with items. They will charge you daily if anything is moved. We didn’t use that one and instead ordered from FOOD to GO and placed our items in the empty fridge.
Each day you go to the pool hut and get a colored wrist band for your hotel. The pool and the ocean was so relaxing and warm. They had brown lounge chairs for the Reef with a detachable cover to block extra sun. The chairs are gobbled up quickly. Note that in the Reef’s ocean water there was an elevated shelf a few feet in from the shore line. It’s good for shallow snorkeling…. but watch your legs because it’s abrupt… most people stayed close in to the shore. The water felt like a bath tub and we could have stayed just in the ocean all day. The pool was also fantastic with a zero entry side. Speaking of POOLS- Atlantis was fantastic. We spend most of our time in the Rapid River on our inner tubes. It moves fairly quickly in some spots and is lined with Lifeguards for added safety (be sure to sit correctly on your tubes). Often they had live Djs spinning music as well.

My biggest negative is the FOOD! They really need to make ATLANTIS an all- inclusive or have some other inexpensive food options closer to our hotel. The REEF is far from the somewhat reasonably priced food locations. We often just walked to the Marina (25min walk) or took a free shuttle over. The closest walking place to eat is at The COVE restaurants next door.. but be prepared for a sticker shock. Most appetizers start at $30. Also the taste of the food is different from the US. I notice that our soft drinks had ample sugar, the bread was dry and the meat tasted a bit strange. Even the pool side stands food were costly. For some fruit ( a bag of 20 grapes in a zip lock) would cost $10-12. We did go into town for the Fish Fry on our 3rd day. The area seemed questionable- but the FOOD was delicious (more authentic Bahamian food) with large portions and reasonably priced. We loved Oh Andros! The best time to go to the Fish Fry would be the afternoon. During the evening hours they serve the same food but priced higher compared to the afternoon.
Also be prepared for a lot of walking. Daily we walked 25minutes back and forth to the library in the coral tower to for free Internet access to make sure that our flight wasn’t canceled from the looming hurricane. The last day we discovered that guests can use the COVE’s business center to check on the flights.
Over all I would rate the Reef and the Atlantis experience a 4 out of 5 stars. It would be a 5 in my book if the FOOD could be changed with more choices at a better price. Staying at the REEF at least you have a kitchen for some options. The ocean, beach, pools and ambiance were perfect and felt safe and not as chaotic as the Royal, Coral and Beach side. If you have any questions- I will be happy to share my views.

Helpful Tips
* The combo meals come with a refillable cup. We brought along empty water bottles and used one of our Atlantis refillable cups to pour in juice or soda in each bottle.
* Get on the rapid river ride at 10 am or 4-5pm to avoid the cruise crowd
*Get on the rapid river closest to the Cove side (several available tubes)
* Travel with carry on bags (avoid long airport lines)
* Take a cab and not the Atlantis shuttle to the hotel and airport
* Visit the Fish Fry for authentic food

Room Tip: Even numbered rooms face the ocean

I booked the deluxe ocean view 1bdrm 2 bath. View was beautiful. Downhill after that. I booked the Reef because it is supposed to be quieter than Atlantis, it has a private beach. There is no quiet anywhere. Starting with the room- the first rooms kitchen infested with ants, on counyers, sink, coffee machine. They moved us to another room the next day. The rooms are large. Not clean. The pillows are stained and the bedding has an odor. The service is not friendly at all. You feel unwelcome. There is a line for everything, even in the little shop to get water at 11pm. The Reef does not have any amenities or services at all. You have to go all the way to Royal Towers for things you would normally have at your fingertips at a similar priced resort in the carribean. You are lucky to get shampoo and conditioner. Atlantis the resort is a nightmare. You are like sardines everywhere you go. The water park is not clean and NOT safe. The lines are are an hour for some rides. If you want a safe and clean water park (although crowded) go to Disney World. I am baffled why anyone would go here. It's not cheap and it's not nice.

Room Tip: I would recommend not going.

Hope you find these helpful:

- Make sure you establish the fare before you step into a taxi. There are additional charges if you have more than 2 people e.g. a family
- Cheaper to take a taxi from the airport to Atlantis than pay the Atlantis transportation package option
- On the way to Atlantis from the airport, be sure to ask the taxi to stop at a supermarket. Purchase a case of bottled water. It is around $12-$14 for a case of 32 bottles. The cost of bottled water at Atlantis is on average $3-$4 per bottle
- Consider the Value Food Plan offered by Atlantis if you have many adults in your party. It covers dinner and breakfast but the restaurant options are very limited. The Market Place breakfast/dinner Buffet is quite good. Breakfast is served from 7 - noon so you can have brunch and skip lunch. The resort water slide activities mostly open at 10:00am
- Stake out your umbrella and deck chairs early in the morning. Unfortunately, the towel dispensing stations don't open until 10:00am so use other articles e.g. beach bags, etc.on your chairs to reserve them. After 10:00am, you will be less likely to find chairs with umbrellas.
- To try local cuisine, visit Fish Fry area. However, watch out again for the cost of the taxi. It is approximately $20 each way.
- Expect to pay $1 for the toll bridge into Paradise Island
- If you like BBQ'd food, be sure to visit Virgil's. However, be careful how you order. Each entre platter and side can feed at least 2 - 3 people. I don't know ii this is done to justify the cost. I never saw so much food go to waste. Or, by forcing you to spend this much, it results in a larger tip for the staff.
- Sounds crazy, but be sure to make reservations for dinner at least the day before. The least busiest time for dinner is between 5:00pm - 7:00pm. The least busiest time for breakfast is between 7:00 and 10:00am.
- If you can tolerate the pressure of a time share pitch, willing to give up 90 minutes and walk away, you can enjoy a 'free' gift e.g. $150 value of a ticket for one person at Dolphin Cay. Yes there is a time share that is offered by Starwood (Sheraton) and Atlantis. It's based on a point system and it assumes that one would want to return each year or every other year to Atlantis, along with a yearly maintenance fee. Not for me.
- Food (burgers, wraps, fries, tacos) from around the pool areas is ok, though relatively more expensive than what you are used to in NA.
- Alcohol (beer, cocktails etc.) are very expensive also. On average $8 - $10 each which includes a15% gratuity. The typical pool side drinks very not that good.
- If you drink a lot of soda/pop. expect to pay a lot more of soda/pop than you are used to.
- Your room key is like a charge card. All you need is a charge card and picture id. There is no need to travel with cash or convert currency. USD is the preferred currency. If you need cash, there is are Scotiabank ATM machines at the casino but placed in a very discrete area of the casino. There are a few other bank locations (RBC, TD, Scotiabank) in a shopping plaza just a few minutes walk from the Atlantis resort (on Paradise island).
- Be sure to obtain extra towels from the towel station. The temperature can get very hot to the point where your feet can get burned when you are lining up to participate in the various water slides etc. Walking on a wet towel may be useful at certain times of the day.
- You may also want to bring along Alo Vera lotion should you get burned by the sun. A bottle cost $16-18. Ditto for sunscreen.
- Snacks e.g. potato chips etc. are very expensive, $8 USD per regular size bag. If you have a family that likes to snack, consider packing some snacks.
