“Loved the Riu!”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

I had to write a review after reading so many negative reviews before my trip. I stayed 4 nights over the Labor Day holiday. When we checked in there was a lady w/a tray of Rum punch at the reception area to greet you. The hotel location is right on the beach and the views are amazing - every day! I upgraded to an Ocean Front king and the room was very clean and spacious (walk-in closet), clean bathroom. Mini-bar and refrigerator in room (mini fridge was stocked w/sodas & water). Simply amazing views and the balcony was large.

I really liked the food at the buffet & was always able to find something I loved. Only ate at 2 of the specialty restaurants and the Japanese was the best. Wouldn't waste my time at Krystal - too gourmet for my taste.
Swim up pool bar - Great! Drinks were so good!
Don't see what all the riff was about in the other reviews about the locals at the beach. All they're trying to do is make a living & will leave you be if you tell them you aren't interested. We actually waited until our last day & rented Jet Ski's from them. Had a blast w/that & negotiated our price.

Didn't catch any of the nightly entertainment - mostly by choice. Enjoyed sitting in front of the hotel in the nice lounge sets and catching a breeze.

A few must do's -
1. There is a pond nearby (walking distance) that is full of turtles and fish. Take some bread from the buffet and walk off your meal and feed the fish & turtles. Very enjoyable!
2. Powerboat adventures - Incredible full day excursion - well worth the $$ and the crew is so friendly. You will be tried when you get back to the hotel.

In summary - the RIU is a lovely place to stay & you can't beat the location and food/drink options.

Room Tip: Stayed in 1431, Oceanfront & pool view - amazing! Large balcony.

Reasons we keep returning: Short flight from Toronto, check in quick and easy on the beach within half hour of arriving at hotel, gorgeous beach, great weather, awesome food and accomodations, you can do alot or you can do nothing but relax.
Complainers will always complain.
Looking forward to going back.

Room Tip: Request rooms on fifth floor or higher.

I will temper this review by saying my husband and I are pretty easy to please as long as there's a beach and alcohol involved. I was admittedly nervous after reading many negative reviews, but we were very pleasently surprised. We arrived early and our bags were watched over so that we could go explore the resort and grab a bite to eat.

Room: Yes, the room is a bit musty, but this has been my experience in many other tropical hotels, so it doesn't bother us. The bed was comfortable, the size was good, and the ocean view was lovely. We were in 1014, and the only drawback is that it is over the air conditioner exhaust, so it was a bit noisy. They provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, and a hair dryer. Our room had double sinks, and a nice sized fridge and tv. We couldn't quite the room as cold as we liked, but again, we are at the beach so we expect that!

Staff: I did not have one negative experience with any of the staff. Everyone was very polite, helpful, and always acted as if I was a VIP guest. From the front desk to the waiters to the janitorial service, we were treated like kings.

Resort: The pool isn't huge, but the swim up bar and in-pool lounge chairs are nice. They keep the grounds very well maintained. While the inside is a bit outdated, it also feels elegent at the same time. All the bathrooms were very clean. The beach is good, and a quick walk from anywhere in the hotel. The guys trying to sell jet skis, weed, etc. are kind of annoying, but after you say no a couple times, they leave you alone. I never once felt unsafe and was by myself plenty. The snorkeling is okay, but if you walk down the beach toward Atlantis just a bit, there are some rocks that provide a little better variety.

Food and Drinks: Phenominal, especially for an all inclusive. My husband can be picky and he always found something delicious to eat. We ate at the Japanese and the Steak House, and were amazed at the quality of the food. Service was very quick and everyone was friendly.

You can tell that the Riu may be ready for some updates, but the value for the price is unbeatable in the Bahamas. Those staying at Atlantis will pay around the same, but have to purchase food and drinks on top of that! Go to the casino and the aquarium after 6 so you can get in for free. Stuart Cove's dive shop is awesome, and the Atlantis waterpark is a blast.

In short, go to the Riu. For the money, it's the best value around and you will be treated like royalty.

Room Tip: Try to get an odd numbered room so you won't be over the air conditioner.

If you wanted an umbrella you had to pay and extra $25.00. No service on the beach so you had to climb up the beach then two flights of stairs to get to the pool to stand in line for a beverage. The food was ok, nothing more than a Golden Corral.

Was NOT worth $75.00 per person for a day pass. Go to Sandals, other people from our cruise ship were very pleased, transportation, a dedicated waiter, massages, first rate food, and t-shirts... That was all inclusive...

Don't waste your time with RIU - IT IS NOT WORTH THE MONEY!

"We have stayed at 3 other Riu Palace resort properties in Cancun, Riviera Maya and this recent stay in Paradise Island. The Paradise Island resort is not a 'Palace' compared to the others. This property is a standard resort and should not be labeled as a Palace property. The only thing that made it a Palace rating is the premium liquor available at the bars and lounges. You had to ask for your favorite brand each time otherwise you would get the cheap stuff. The rooms were very small compared to other properties and the balconies were tiny, but we did have a decent view from the 9th floor facing the poolside of the resort. We booked a Superior Junior Suite. I'm not sure what made it 'Superior' compared to a regular Junior Suite, we had 2 sitting chairs and a small table in our room that did not justify calling it a 'suite'. There was no separate sitting area like we had at previous Riu Palace properties. I would not pay top dollar to stay here - we were satisfied with the half price we paid during hurricane season. The specialty restaurants were nice - we dined in the Japanese and the Gourmet restaurants. Reservations are only taken between 8:00-9:00 in the morning and we only had 2 choices out of the 4 restaurants because they claimed the were booked up, yet we walked by the Steak House and Fusion half way between sittings (6:30 and 9:30) and there were plenty of empty tables. The resort was probably only 1/3 booked, so we wondered why they claimed to have limited specialty restaurant reservations available. The buffet was okay, but nothing spectacular. It was decent food and we stuffed ourselves each night. Breakfast buffet was plentiful with a made to order omlet station. Lunch buffet was the same every day - typical for this type of resort. The pool was nice because it wasn't crowded, but I can't imagine what it is like when the hotel is fully booked. There is only one pool and patio area, so it must be a zoo when fully booked. The beach is nice - surf was gentle and easy to get in and out of the water. There were no rocks to trip over. The only issue was the constant nagging of the Jet Ski rental guys - they scour the beach asking tourists over and over to rent a jet ski. The hotel allows them to hover at the base of the steps from the hotel to the beach harassing guests the second they step foot in the sand, with their useless Security Guard standing with them. There are ladies peddling junk jewelry and bathing suit wraps on the beach and the 'hey pretty lady you want your hair braided' roaming up and down the beach all day. They were good with taking 'no' for an answer. The resort beach abuts the public beach so that is probably why there are so many peddlers. They are just trying to make a living. If you walk down the beach to the Atlantis Resort next door, don't try to take a peek up the steps to the resort - their Security Guard will pounce on you within seconds. You can go to Atlantis after 6:30 at night and walk all over the property without any passes. We took a taxi to the Atlantis Casino one night and walked all over the property checking out the pools, beautiful aquariums and opulent surroundings. Don't plan to eat or drink there - the prices are astronomical! One lady told me she paid $20 for a drink at the casino bar! We went on an excursion (booked in the Riu hotel Lobby through Magestic Tours) to Sandy Toes Beach on Rose Island. $85 each that included 40 minute round trip boat ride to the island, lunch, beach chairs and snorkeling on the island's reef. We felt it was worth the money to spend the day on a secluded beach. They had a nice beach bar there with all kinds of tropical frozen drinks! Don't rent a car - the traffic in Nassau is crazy and you drive on the left side of the road. Taxis are worth the price - usually around $15 to Nassau, $9-11 to Atlantis (you can walk, but its a huge resort). Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Riu, but it is by no means a 'Palace' level resort in the Riu chain."

Room Tip: Insist on a room on the 8th floor or higher with an odd number to get the afternoon sun on your balc...

I stayed at the Riu as part of my honeymoon in September of 2011. This is not the right place for such an occasion. First, the service. We had to wait to be acknowledged. We has to wait for a room. About an hour. We could not leave our bags and go to the buffet to eat. No, we were forced to stand in the lobby with out seats. Terrible start. Once we got to the room, it as average. But the major issue was the carpet on the floor. Bad mildew smell from the humidity.

The buffet was average, and the specialty restaurants were okay. Their pool was in need of some repair. And security was needed. The locals stand on the stairs leading to the beach, pushing time shares and jet ski rides. Tacky. The inside bar tender was very nice, and made some nice drinks. But the alcohol was not top shelf.

The beach is wonderful. The water is crystal clear, and the fish swim up to you. The waves an very gentle, and the water is warm.

I would go back, but not with my wife. This hotel is for fun, not romance.
