“Sheronda bday vac in the Atlantis”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

Checkin:

We arrived at the Atlantis and ran into a bump because a few things wasn't told that we needed to stay here in this hotel. This wonderful supv/mgr Diane Ross immediately assisted us and took care of us and gave us all the pertinant info that we needed to have a good time. We checked in and went right upstairs above check in. The lobby is very nice and quaint but has ample space to access the pc, get assistance for cabs and direction and sit and relay.

Rooms:

The rooms were very nice and modern and the couch was very comfortable to sleep. We needed remote for the batteries and a garbage can and as soon as we called them they were immediately at our door in no time with fresh batteries and a can. I loved the fact that they had both of our friends right next door. We had went grocery shopping at the store and put everything away in our fridae and cabinets. All household products were available for use, so I felt like I was confortable in my own home.

Pools:

The pool area staff was fantastic and the mgr who works there is so nice and warm. She gave me so many good spots to tour and great restaurants where I can get some conch. We always had fresh towels and the area had ample of enough space where you can swim, lay out and chill. The scenary of the yachts was picture perfect.

Bar by the pool:

The staff was quiet at first and I found that they dont really socialize with there guests like other countries I've been too like Jamaica, DR etc . We broke the ice with them and there management and was entertaining them while we were there so they started opening up. Them too were very hospitable . The drinks during happy hour was wonderful and at night you could definitely get tipsy- drunk .

Transportation to the Atlantis :

They were oh so nice and was cool that we had free transportation. I tipped them for there service and they were greatly appreciated. They run to about 11pm so we would hang by our hotel then go before the Atlantis park closes @ 7pm. The perk was having full access to Atlantis for free.

I travel alot and I came here because my girlfriend has time sharing. i can say by dar that the people of the bahamas are the friendliest people.

You can share a cab from the hotel to go to Senor Frogs and the front desk can arrange it for you. We also paid $15 to go from the hotel to the airport. I would have paid $34 each person bec we were all flying back from different places.

I loved this place and I'm thinking within the next couple of months to get time sharing here, I fell in love and the ambiance won me over .

Room Tip: tip I would say is ask the cab driver from the airport to stop at the grocery so you dont have to go...

Spent 7 nights (Sept 14 – 21) at Harborside Resort in a premium one-bedroom suite.

Getting there:

We flew in via Delta Airlines through Atlanta, which worked out okay, despite having to sit on the tarmac in ATL for an hour while they searched for the maintenance man who did work on the plane, but then forgot to sign off on it. Oops.

The NAS airport is currently being remodeled, and as a result you will walk forever and a day from the gate to the Customs desk. Just about when you think you’ve walked all the way to Paradise Island, you do come out at the end, so no worries.

Getting around:

Before departing I got in touch with Cheryl’s Bahamas Taxi Service online; Cheryl Ferguson was right there waiting for us when we cleared Customs, and had us out to Paradise Island in practically no time. Cheryl was THE BEST --- we used her to get around the island a couple of times, and she was always on time and very friendly. We spent 4 hours with her one afternoon on an island tour, and she took us all over Nassau and showed us the sights off the beaten path as well. If you’re looking for safe, courteous, and trustworthy transportation, Cheryl is your lady.

For groceries, we pre-ordered through FoodStore2Go online, which worked out perfectly. We ordered breakfast items and some fruit to have in our room, and the delivery driver met us as we checked in, then helped us by unpacking everything and loading the fridge for us. Their service was outstanding, and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again.

Hotel:

We stayed for 7 nights in a one-bedroom premium suite at Harborside Resort at Atlantis. Harborside is a timeshare facility next door to Atlantis, but guests there get the same benefits and perks as those staying at one of the main hotels, with the added benefit of extra room, a full kitchen, a washer/dryer, and a living room.

At first they gave us a room on the first floor in Building 2, but when we went inside we discovered that the bathroom floor was flooded and there was water dripping from the ceiling. We called the front desk, and they immediately switched us to a room on the top floor in Building 4 (4747), which was fine until the last day … when the bathroom floor was flooded and there was water dripping from the ceiling. We suspect that their air conditioners were frozen up somehow – but it was quite the mess.

Overall though the room was nice – the TV in the living room had a nice LG flat-screen TV, and a Bose DVD player and sound system. The kitchen was convenient, and it was nice to have breakfast in our suite most days. The bed was a little hard for our tastes, but the linens were fresh and clean, and the towels in the bath were plentiful. We had no view to speak of, but that’s okay – we weren’t there to stare out the window all day.

For those going to Harborside soon, be aware that they’re currently repaving the parking lots around the property – for a couple of days the smell of hot asphalt/tar was in the air. Fortunately, the smell didn’t seem to penetrate into the rooms. Also, during the construction the electricity went out 5 or 6 times; usually only for a minute or so; long enough to make all of the digital clocks in the suite blink. The grounds around the property were well maintained and clean, and we felt perfectly safe the entire time, day or night.

The staff at Harborside were all very friendly and helpful, especially when it came to moving us to a new room due to the flooding in the first one. The concierge (Edwina) was friendly and glad to help in any way she could, and wasn’t pushy in any way. She controls the free 15-minute internet access with an iron fist however; so don’t try skipping the sign-in requirements on her little clipboard. Internet access was available on a first-come, first log-on basis in the lobby (two computers) between 8:30 AM and 7:30 PM only; after which Edwina would unplug the keyboards and take them with her. So if you’re hoping to have some free web time late at night, you may want to P.Y.O.K. (pack your own keyboard - silly, I know).

To get from Harborside to practically anywhere, your choices are to walk or to take one of the Atlantis shuttle buses. The buses came by every 5 – 10 minutes, and would take you to the Cove, Beach, or Royal towers. Sometimes they’d make multiple stops; other times it was a direct drive. Either way, it only took about 5 minutes via bus to get to any of the hotels. The longest we ever had to wait for a ride was about 20 minutes, and that was just once when coming back to Harborside from the Royal building.

Walking from Harborside to the Marina Village is easy and quick; if you walk along the street side (past the security gate and cross the street at the crosswalk), you can get there in about 5 minutes. If you take the “scenic route” around the backside of Harborside, past the marinas and the yachts, you’ll find that the path “wanders”, and the walk is about 3X as long. So if you’re in a hurry, I recommend taking street route over the waterview route.

We never used the pool at Harborside, but it looked nice. We did stop most mornings at the towel hut for our daily Atlantis wristbands and some towels, but you could easily do that over at the waterpark as well. We did have breakfast one morning at The Point, but that’s it – otherwise we ate in our room or offsite somewhere.

Atlantis Itself:

The hotel/resort really surprised us. We’d read a lot of negative things online before going, but we found it to be a wonderfully relaxing place. For the most part the staff was very friendly, and they really did make us feel welcome and at home.

Security made its presence known most of the time; they’d check your wristband or room key every time you approached a major door, except for in the evenings after the cruise ships had departed. We went through The Dig twice without ever seeing anyone working there, other than the cashier in the gift shop who couldn’t seem to care less who was in there.

We spent a majority of our time at the Royal Towers enjoying the waterpark and lagoon. We did go down to the Atlantis Beach one day, but the water was too rough to snorkel in, and we were inundated nonstop with vendors trying to sell us stuff (jewelry, seashells, jet ski rides, coconut drinks, you name it…), so we gave up and went back up to the resort and swam in the lagoon instead.

The lagoon was a great place for us, since we like to spend our days snorkeling and there was plenty of fish and conchs to see. (Unfortunately, there was also a lot of garbage in the water, too.) Still, it was uncrowded, quiet, and close to necessities like lunch, cocktails, and fresh water showers. If you snorkel out past the buoys you’ll need a yellow life vest, but they’re free to borrow from the Stewart Cove’s stand. If you go, you’ll see a ton of different fish if you swim out near the bridge. The water is about 10-15 feet deep out there, depending on the tide.

We also enjoyed our time at Aquaventure, primarily spending our time on The Current. The lifeguards were telling people it’s a 40-minute round trip ride, but we found it to be more like 20 minutes if you took the Rapids side or 25 minutes if you went through the Power Tower side. This is definitely no “lazy river”, no matter how calm and tranquil it may seem when you first get in. There are 3 sets of rapids, a long stretch where waves crash upon you, and a calm trip up to the Power Tower, where four high-impact water slides await. There were lots of lifeguards on duty, and we never had any problems finding an available inner tube to use.

The Current is a lot of fun, but yes – you will get beaten up. I fell out of my inner tube several times, mostly while going through the rapids in the tunnels. If you fall out there, you can expect to be beaten on the rocks all the way down. Eventually I found the secret is to get an inner tube that isn’t over-inflated; those seem to be easier to shift your weight when necessary. Also, be sure to put sunscreen on the TOPS of your feet, as they’ll hang out in the sun all day, and you’ll end up with a nasty sunburn where you didn’t expect one (trust us on this one).

Speaking of sunscreen, be sure to pack enough of it, and bring it from home. They wanted $28 a bottle for it at Atlantis.

The Leap of Faith through the shark tank was closed for remodeling, and from the looks of it, it will be closed for some time.

As expected, overall the food and drinks were expensive, although the lunch combos were a somewhat-good deal. Still, $8.50 plus tip for a bottle of water??? Do what we did, and bring your own water bottle from home, and ask them for some ice. It helps make those expensive bottles of water stay cold and last longer. In certain areas of the park they did have servers who came around the chairs to take drink orders, but you were never too far from a cold beverage if you wanted one.

Towels were plentiful, as were chaise chairs, although if you wanted one with an umbrella or bimini shade you’d need to get there early, especially when there’s lots of cruise ships in port.

The locker facilities also seemed to fill up fast, although we never used them.

Inside Atlantis:

As I mentioned, The Dig was wide open to everyone in the evenings, with nobody there to check your ID. Your mileage may vary. The fish tanks were really incredible, and the sight of the giant rays was enough to impress even the most cynical person.

The slot machines in the casino are VERY TIGHT. Keep this in mind. Also, be sure to look closely at the machines; one slot I played had a maximum bet of 90 credits; the machine next to it had a max bet of 750 credits. Your money will go rapidly in here.

The gift shops were jammed with really expensive trinkets; there wasn’t a lot in there that I’d call a “good value”, but it was all pretty to look at. The other shops were primarily jewelry-focused, with a large emphasis on huge, gaudy watches and diamond-encrusted baubles.

The Royal Tower lobby is very impressive to look at. Outside of possibly Caesars Palace in Vegas, it’s probably the most impressive lobby I’ve seen.

The movie theater had 3 different films a day, but we never made it to any of them. The comedy show featured our buddy Nick Cannon for two nights, then had other comedians there to perform on the other nights. We never went there either. From what I could tell, Aura, the nightclub near the casino, was dead during the week but hectic on the weekends. Again, we didn’t go inside, so I can’t say for certain.

Restaurants:

Marketplace (Royal Tower): We ate dinner twice during our stay at this buffet. The salads were good and fresh, and the conch salad was excellent. They had an Indian cuisine area that looked kind of lame, a pizza area that looked stale, and some sad looking soup. But on the good side the carved meats were excellent, and they had lots of seafood options. Desserts were also excellent.

Mosaic (Cove Tower): A good buffet, but not a “$68 per person good” buffet. Food was okay, service was so-so, and the ambiance was mostly nice (the dress code was definitely not being enforced – saw swimsuits, short shorts, even a teenage girl in pajamas). We only went there once; the value just wasn’t there.

Bimini Road (Marina Village): Excellent seafood. The conch fritters, shrimp, lobster, grouper, and conch salad were all delicious. Service was wonderful.

Carmines (Marina Village): Overrated and boring, bland food. They pride themselves on serving huge portions that two people could never finish, then charging you an arm and a leg for food you’re going to have to throw out most of. My wife and I wanted a salad, and they brought us enough to feed at least 8 people. We ate a lot of it, but still over 75% went into the garbage. What a waste of food and money (it was $20). Not a place I’d return to, and certainly not without a small army to feed.

Johnny Rockets (Marina Village): Similar to just about every other JR franchise out there, with the exception of the conch dishes. Good burgers, and while they’re expensive ($7.50 each), the milkshakes are really quite tasty.

Murray’s Delicatessen (Marina Village): “New York” in name only. The pastrami sandwiches were okay, but certainly not what you’d expect to find in NYC. Service was mediocre at best; our server was pretty much just going through the motions.

The Point (Harborside Resort): Had breakfast here one morning. Food was okay, the servers were more interested in watching “The Doctors” on the TVs over the bar than they were in helping the guests.

Ben & Jerry’s (Marina Village): Always a line, but well worth it. The ice cream is expensive here, but really good. An excellent was to splurge on your diet.

Shark Bites (Aquaventure): A sit-down lunch option near the pools. Service was excellent, and the fish sandwiches were out of this world.

Pisces (Aquaventure): Our favorite place for lunch. The fish & chips were OUTSTANDING, as were the conch fritters. Service was wonderful. They’re located near the lagoon.

Finally, please note that the week we were there many of the restaurants were closed for one or more nights, due to the off-season timing. Café Martinique was closed the entire time we were there, and the Seafire Steakhouse, Carmine’s, and Bimini Road restaurants were also closed one or more nights.

In summary:

1 – It’s expensive. Know it going in, get used to that fact when you’re there, and try not to worry about it so much.

2 – Harborside is a great place to stay if you want the added room/flexibility of home-like vacations. Otherwise, it’s probably not worth your time to go over there to see, since there isn’t much “there” there, like there is in the Royal or Cove towers.

3 – The waterpark is hilariously fun. Just be sure to bring lots and lots of sunscreen, and a couple of Band-Aids, in case you get dumped.

4 – Call my pal Cheryl if you need a ride to/from the airport, or out onto the town. Her taxi is clean and reliable, she loves her hometown, and she really takes pride in her work.

5 – FoodStore2Go was a Godsend. Order ahead of time, and don’t worry about packing a ton of groceries with you.

Overall, we were really impressed with Atlantis. It’s a fine resort staffed with friendly people, and with any luck we’ll be able to return again one day.

Room Tip: Be sure to check the bathroom floor when you first get to your room, to make sure it isn't flood...

We went to Atlantis this past week and traded points from Hyatt Vacation Club to stay at Harborside Resort. Instead of itemizing each individual aspect of the trip, let's just say we will never go back to the Bahamas. The country is so Americanized now, the people are lazy and the service is horrible. They put us in the wrong condo and when I questioned them, they said they did not have time to address it and I needed to wait. I called Interval and they told those folks the same thing. I finally went and had to get in their "faces" so to speak until they finally upgraded us to 1 step up. (Not that impressive) The food was horrible and overpriced the entire trip. We have better seafood in Texas than we experienced in the Bahamas. The Fish Fry area restaurants are a complete joke. Every single meal we had was $100 minimum with only 2 adults and 2 young children including sometimes with zero alcohol purchased. Atlantis is getting rundown and anyone who goes there thinking it is going to be a quality place is in for a rude awakening. I never expected the service to be as bad as it was, but the employees there do not give a damn since every single purchase includes 15% gratuity at EVERY SINGLE establishment both in Atlantis and all over the Bahamas. The taxi drivers are a joke as well. Just to get off Paradise Island will cost you $4 a head (1 way) even if you are just going across the bridge which is a 5 minute drive at most. This was not Paradise. I recommend going to the other Virgin Islands before going to the Bahamas and wasting your money. Lastly, going in low season is a bad time to go since Atlantis has closed quite a few rides down and half the restaurants were closed as well.

Firstly, I would like to thank you for taking the time to review our property and thank you for choosing Harborside as your vacation destination. When a guest does not enjoy their vacation at Harborside, it is deeply disappointing to us. What is even more troubling and disappointing is when a guest is so displeased that they do not wish to return to the country. I would love the opportunity to speak with you directly so that we can prevent this from happening in the future. I can be contacted that hsresponse@kerzner.com .

We stayed at the Harborside last October for our honeymoon. We were a bit skeptical about staying there because of the family atmosphere it is very well known for. Upon arriving everyone was so attentive and welcoming. We felt right at home! Any doubt we had was wiped away as soon as we arrived. Since it was October there were not many families there so it worked out perfectly. The weather was gorgeous or whole 9 day stay! The pricing is a little high but that is expected when going to an Island (we know being from NY and living in the outer banks). The pool was very refreshing and just a quick walk from our room! The room was amazing! We used my parents time share for our honeymoon so we really cant comment on the pricing but the cleanliness was great and the room was huge! We had a villa type unit with a king bed, living room, dining room, huge bathroom, and big kitchen. We loved everything about our stay here and can not wait to come back and maybe one day have our own time share down there!

This timeshare was beautiful! It's perfectly situated across from the main Atlantis hotel but has a LOT more room in the units but still has access to all the same ammenities as hotel guests including the aquariums and water rides. I think I'm still water-logged from spending so much time riding that lazy river! I also felt like a kid sliding down all the water slides. I kept trying to think of how all that manicured beauty made me feel and the only comparison I could come up with is "Disneyland for Adults!" Sure, there were a couple of kids there too but the casinos, excellent restaurants and nightclubs helped me to feel like I was definitely on vacation! I also spent a lot of time just sitting on the beautiful sand beaches quietly marveling at the waves. The food was excellent but some of the venues were expensive. I'll have to look into one of their meal plans next time and see if it's worth it. We struck up a friendship with one of the taxi drivers and had him take us around the island for tours. We also asked him to take us "where the locals eat" and he took us to this hole-in-the-wall restaurant on the main Nassau island and I couldn't have been happier - the food was delicious and VERY inexpensive! I'll definitely try to go to this resort again and when I do, I'll have to go to the restaurants in town at least a couple nights during the week.

Room Tip: My room had a great view of the Atlantis resort across the waterway.

Just what the doctor ordered and the patient needed. Just spent a week in absolute Paradise. Harbor side villas provided us with home away from home comforts and amenities. The properties are impeccable. We ate on property at Carmine's . Food was excellent, up to New York standards. Huge portions. It was just the two of us. Four people easily could have shared our meal. A little over the top service wise but that is the norm at Atlantis. They can't do enough for you. Off premises we ate at PoopDeck, great seafood on the water. Incredible at sunset. Highly recommend . Also off premise Twin brothers Da Fish Fry. Great conch chowder and fritters. Fresh seafood, good service and unusual for Nassau very reasonable. It was the best highly needed vacations we every had. We will return to "PARADISE". don't miss Lazy river and slides. Wow. Have fun.
