“Sunrise Beach Villa”
Reviewed July 7, 2012

This was our third time to Sunrise Beach Villas. Frankly, I was a little disappointed during this stay since the other two were so good. I made a specific room request, and received an email confirmation that I would stay in room 109, but was put in 115 without an explanation which is only room away from Viola's (restaurant) and without a top balcony. Viola's is a locals hangout and can be very loud at night. Last night the party went on until 4:00 in the morning and no one got any sleep. The phone never worked and the internet was broken the entire week. I asked to get it fixed but nothing ever came of it. The hot water knob in the shower was broke but they fixed it in a few hours.

Overall, the people are nice and it's in a great location. However, the next time we're in the Bahamas, I think we'll look for an alternative next time.

Room Tip: Stay no where near Viola's restaurant.

We spent four nights at the Sunrise in late June, 2012. This property affords everything that the larger "mega" hotels does not...peace, quiet, uncrowded relaxation. We rented a one bedroom condo which was perfect for our family with two older children. No long hallways, lobbies and pool areas to navigate in order to get to the beach...you are right there! No fighting for pool chairs...the two pools are uncrowded. No worries about going broke over restaurant bills...the kitchen allows you to have meals there, and if you want to go out, there's Violas or Atlantis or the Ocean Club.
If you want crowded pools, small rooms, or room service, this isn't the place for you.

I highly recommend it!

Room Tip: Any are good, but ask if you want one that has an ocean view. Ours didn't, and we didn't car...

We just returned from Paradise Island and the Sunrise Beach Villas and I felt compelled to write this review immediately. BTW, I am not typically a "review writer", but our family of 5 had such a wonderful time that I must. In brief, Sunrise Beach Villas is a wonderful, small resort with a "local" feel and charm about it. First, we found the location of our 3 bedroom Villa (#3) to be perfect. It looks out over the beach and ocean with a wonderful patio shaded by pines. The furnishings were well above average and the villa was quite clean and kept reasonably so by housekeeping daily. The resort is small and quiet, which I believe are strengths given the relative "hustle and bustle" of the island at times. It is a 10-12 minute walk from the downtown area (which includes a Dunkin' Donuts, restaurants and grocery stores) and a 5 minute walk from Atlantis. (We visited there several times and, for the life of me, I can't understand why someone would subject themselves to that craziness on vacation - but that is another topic). The beach on which the resort is situated faces north and is a beautiful public beach (Cabbage Beach), though access to it is limited to paths to the left of the resort. This is important when multiple cruise ships are in town because taxi cabs will bring cruise folks to Cabbage Beach and it can get a bit hectic. That said, you can escape this by either "setting up camp" 30 or 40 yards down the beach (to the right) or simply spending the day at the pool. The pool and courtyard by the Villas are wonderful. It was quiet, yet only steps from the stairs leading down to the beach so we could go back and forth as we pleased. This also afforded us the chance to access waverunners, hair braiding, parasailing and tubing to our heart's content. These are all offered frequently by the locals. It was on the fringe of annoying at times, but everyone was pretty polite when refused. Viola's is worth a meal or two and is great for drinks at night. It is tiny and an indoor/outdoor setup but we liked it. We did breakfast and lunch in our villas to keep cost down and this is accomodated nicely by the groceriestogo.com service, which allowed us to order and pay online. They had our villa completely stocked when we arrived, removing the inconvenience of having to grocery shop during your first minutes of vacation!! (Delivery fee was minimal - I think we spent about $350 for 7 days worth of groceries for a family of 4 adults (2 college) and 1 teen (13). Groceries are expensive no matter where you go on the island, as are most meals. I would do it again this way. Finally, I found the staff to be quite wonderful. They set up and cancelled excursions for us as our plans changed and did so with a smile and an easy way. We found the Stuart Cove snorkeling to be nice, though too long a drive to get there and a bit of a "stampede-like" expeience. The Atlantis' Dolphin Cay experience was expensive (way over-priced like most everything there) but very cool. In summary, our kids found this to be "one of our best vacations ever" and an expeience we all very much enjoyed. I would return to Sunrise beach Resort in a heartbeat!!

Room Tip: If we returned, and we surely will if our travels bring us back to the Bahamas, we would choose Vill...

We have stayed at Atlantis before and needed a place to spread out. We rented #3, ocean front, three bedrooms, after looking at the photos on their site. We also looked at #1 which you would think would be the best, but all are independently owned and decorated differently. For a three-bedroom this is the one to get. Pretty much looked like the photos. Very roomy for a group of 6. You could sleep up to 10 though, on couches throughout the condo. The first floor has a bedroom (with private bath) as you walk in. Then it opens to a large dining room, spacious kitchen, open living room and another dining area. We re-arrange the furniture to accomodate everyone to be able to sit in the living room, and eat in the dining area closest to the outdoor patio. It rained most of the time we were there so we really could not use the sitting area outside. BUT the pation had over 12 chairs and enough tables to eat out there too. Also had an OLD gas grill. Ok so upstairs is another wasted area that had a couch and desk with computer and two bedrooms with their own private bathrooms. Problem is the larger of the two, with a king bed had a old, in need of updating bathroom. The tiled were cracking, the shower stall door didn't close and had a drain with killer metal edges that would rip your feet if not careful, and typical Bahamian faucets... falling off when used. The other bedroom on the second floor had two twin beds and overlooked the living room below. This bedroom had the nicest, newest, LARGE bath with Jacuzzi tub and separate shower. Why waste the nicest bath on a "kids" room? So beside the upstairs bath and other typical Bahamian painting and electric outlet issues, this was a very nice unit. We viewed the 5 bedroom and would recommend that for anyone with a large crowd. The unit next door, #2, does not get rented. So location in the complex is great. Quick exits to beach, GREAT views from patio, and close but don't hear the noise from the pool.
I will say that there was ONE very nice person when checking in and ONE NOT SO NICE. If you don't like your job, don't give me your pouty lip.
The staff at the restaurant were very frinedly. We enjoyed Karoke Night with the locals. It was a lot of fun. Other than that we just ordered drinks, and yes the tip is included, it's the Bahamas. We spent some time at Atlantis (2 days) and walked there for evening strolls.A quick walk down Casino Drive and then through the Coral Tower, etc. to where you want to go, casino, etc. It was air conditioned and better than walking from the Royal Tower down those streets. Also walked to the Cloisters for photos. The teenagers tried to get into the One and Only Hotel (007 Fans) and were turned around at the GATE. Walked to the shopping center and craft center. Liquor store, Dunkin Donuts, restaurants. Also walked across the bridge and through the Atlantis shopping mall. Everything is close. But coming back to the quiet, none hectic, Sunrise was the best. We did not want crowds.
The beach has ALL SORTS of activites to do. Just walk down the private steps and someone will confront you. The Sunrise Security Staff always patrols the area.
The grounds were maintained and clean and the gates were always locked. So don't forget your keys to leave or get back. The public beach access is right next door, so parking on the street is a premium. If Sunrise is fully booked I don't think their parking lot could accomodate all the cars. And there is only one way in and its the exit too!
We ordered our food ahead of time with foodstore2go.com It worked out GREAT. Our flight was delayed and they delivered the food to the condo and put the refigerated things away. Their prices and selection were much better than the local food market-mini store. Would recommend them to ALL.

Room Tip: Look at their website to locate room location.

What we thought of SBV- Security= very good/ Rooms are mediocre only because cleanliness should be stepped up a notch. Don't be fooled, the rooms seem clean, but not for a smart traveler that checks EVERYWHERE. Nowadays with the bed bug epidemic you have to make sure you are in a safe room. My first area to check was of course the bed (seems and all). Sheets were clean, but wasn't too fond of the comforter, which should be updated to a brighter color so that guests can see any stains that may be hidden. What I did find that disgusted me was hair, dust, and dirt on the insides of the bed frame that holds the mattress (very disappointing) a better vacuuming job should be done in that area. One day my sister actually found an extremely LARGE centipede in the villa near the couch on the first floor, which was terrifying and disgusting! We told housekeeping and she used the broom meant for sweeping to "kill" it and that was pretty gross since it's guts must have gotten stuck to the broom after she stabbed it (common sense now when you sweep you'll be wiping around bug guts). There were also very tiny bugs that were coming out of the stove tops, black in color and we found ourselves having to kill a few everyday. Pest control needs to be stepped up! Beach was the most amazing and satisfying part so serene and beautiful made up for most! Two front desk women-in a word unprofessional-we had canceled an activity and wanted a refund and the one woman acted like a child slamming the cupboard as my daughter came in to ask for a towel trying to show her anger (both seemed to spew lies about their discounts). The way those two set up activities for guests is very sneaky I suggest guests to do it on their own. One receptionist was quite rude and had a very bad way of dealing with guests. Watched multiple guests come into front desk complaining. Overpriced- Next trip Atlantis for sure!

Room Tip: Don't ask for the front desk to call you a cab, find a good cabby on your own get his card and c...

We spent a very rainy four nights at the Sunrise last week .I think our vacation would have been totally different had the weather cooperated ! Even with the rain , we felt the Sunrise is in a great location - steps from the beach and very close to the Atlantis . The beach is beautiful -although we didn't spend much time on it !!
We stayed in a one bedroom villa in the back - it was a bit dated , but clean and quiet . We had no problems with getting our room cleaned ,in fact we were impressed that it was done so promptly ,The staff was very friendly and helpful - from the lady in the lobby to everyone in Viola's , Kelsey and Paula were especially friendly and helpful . The food and drinks at Viola's were great - I felt very reasonably priced ,especially if you compare them to anywhere else on the island . It did seem to take a long time to get food ,but we figured that's the way it is in the islands and tried to be patient !
All in all I think you get what you pay for , and as far as friendly ,helpful staff, goes a little bit more .

So my girlfriend and I just returned from our stay at Sunrise beach club. The beach was very nice, the pool area was beautiful and the property was landscaped excellently. The room was nice and a good size for 2 people. The service at Viola's bar and grill was, for the most part pretty good. The food was good but overpriced for what you get. The biggest complaint that we had about the bar was every time we would order a drink it was a different price...even if it was the same drink. The biggest problem however was that the bar stays open until 1-2 am on the weekends. If you are unfortunate enough to stay in one of the 1 bedroom villas, don't plan on getting any sleep until about 2:30 am due to the screaming karaoke and blaring music. And this is coming from 2 twenty-somethings. Also, the front desk closes at 8, so you won't get help from anyone at the hotel after that time.

Overall, if you stay in one of the larger villas, located in the back of the property, you will probably have a great time. If you stay in one of the 1 bedroom or closer to the bar villas, be prepared to be tired and possibly consider another alternative.

Room Tip: Try to not get a one bedroom right by the bar if you want peace and quiet.

Dear Lisa,
Thank you for taking time to review our tropical getaway. We look forward to having you return and stay in one of the larger villas, but we want all guests to feel at home. We immediately brought your concerns to the attention of our bar manager. We are pleased that it appears you got to partake of one or more of our many “Happy Hours”, where you can take a dip in the pool and get a dip in the price of a refreshing drink all at the same time. Thank you again for your helpful review and your kind mention of the good service provided by our bar staff.
