Owner description: Sometimes the best way to describe something is by saying what it isn't. Dolphin Cay isn't an aquarium, it's not an entertainment facility, and it doesn't stage marine shows. Opened in 2007 in response to a need to provide a safe haven for 16 stranded dolphins whose home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, Dolphin Cay is one of the world's largest open-air, man-made marine mammal habitats. Located on the west side of the Atlantis, Paradise Island property, the 14-acre environment includes an 11-acre lagoon complete with coves and sandy beaches, 7 connected "residential" pools, a state-of-the-art education center, an animal rescue-rehabilitation hospital, an animal pharmacy, a quarantine, and a separate sea lion center. Dolphin Cay is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA), and the International Marine Animal Trainers' Association (IMATA). Through its partnerships with the University of Florida's School of Veterinary Medicine and University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Dolphin Cay plays an active role in the development of the advanced research and knowledge about marine mammals. Every visit to Dolphin Cay supports the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation, creating and promoting solutions for a wide range of marine conservation challenges from coral reef degradation to marine species in decline.

Let me first say that if you have no other choice the dolphin encounter at Atlantis is pretty good. It's definitely worth doing once. We did the deep water swim while we were there. Our kids had a blast while they were there. They did the foot push, swam with the dolphin using a mini powered sled. It's truly a memory you won't forget. However my wife and I have gone to the Bahamas before and went on a dolphin encounter somewhere else to be able to compare it to. With that said if you have the option go to blue lagoon dolphin encounter. It's much better and you can truly tell the difference in the animals there and there relationships with their trainers. When we got to Atlantis it was instant get in the water and take pictures by their photographer, then it was change positions and take some more. We spent the first 15 minutes just having our pictures taken just to have all them sold back to us at the end. When you are able to compare two of the experiences together. You can tell Atlantis is more worried about making money then your experience. So if you are limited to Atlantis it still is a lot of fun, however at blue lagoon you get a lot more bang for your buck.

Had so much fun with the dolphins! There were so many and they were very playful. I was skeptical at first but the guides put me at ease. This is a must do to your trip.

Nephew did the trainer for a day and he was the only participant for the day. Swam with the dolphins. Helped feed all sea creatures as well as learning about the care and feeding of the same. LOVED IT!

I was very unsure about booking this excursion with all the mixed reviews but it was well worth the expense. We were in the water with the Dolphins for at least 45 min and I felt we had plenty of time to handle the Dolphins. The trainers were very friendly and entertaining which helped make the experience exciting, educational, and fun. Our group had problems with our Dolphin at first because she was not wanting to interact. They then went and got another Dolphin and assured us that we would still get our time with the Dolphin. The experience was amazing, and we ended up handling two different Dolphins it was a mother and her two year old baby. Many of the negative reviews are true on here about not being able to take your own pictures and the pictures to purchase are very pricey. You do get to pick one picture for free and are given the opportunity to purchase the pictures when you get back home on line for about $15 a piece. The whole experience was everything I had hoped for and more and I would highly recommend this excursion. Next time we visit Atlantis my wife and I will book this excursion again.

We did the shallow water adventure and it included standing in waist deep water and: giving a dolphin a high-five, hugging and kissing a dolphin, and rubbing it's belly. A staff member will be there taking tons of pictures of you to sell them to you later (your choice). My wife would have preferred the deep water dolphin adventure, so if you want a more physical connection to these amazing mammals, try that.
