Hidden away in the downtown area, the Talking Stick Restaurant is a delicious little gem located a few steps off the hustle and bustle of Bay Street. Countless visitors walk up George Street everyday to visit the beautiful Christ Church Cathedral, but most aren't aware of the wonderful little restaurant found across the street. Located in the lobby of the Towne Hotel, the cozy, cafe-style restaurant offers a nice variety of authentic home-made Bahamian cuisine and a tasty array of daily specials including locally-caught fresh fish, savory curried chicken, island-style barbecued ribs and their famous roasted lamb shank.
The menu is very affordable with most entrees ranging in the $10 to 415 bracket. The ambiance is artsy, unveiling an interesting display of local art and a unique collection of "talking sticks" belonging to the owners. Adding to the overall appeal and flavor of this nice little hideaway is the old-time, handsome wooden bar running the length of the back wall -- complete with warm, friendly service and tasty tropical drinks whipped up by seasoned barmen.
If you just want a sandwich or something light, no problem. Crisp salads, fish fingers, juicy burgers and other sandwiches can be ready in a few minutes. Don't leave without asking about the daily dessert, always a homemade treat guaranteed to end your visit on a sweet note.

We were in Nassau for a business meeting but arrived a few days early to take a short vacation. On our first night, my wife and I wandered just around Nassau looking for a simple and preferably cheap place to eat. We elected not to eat at Dunkin' Donuts since it was largely American style hamburgers and such but perhaps should have. We found the Talking Stick Bar and Restaurant in the Towne Hotel just up hill from Bay St., the main east/west Nassau throughfare through downtown. We were attracted to the $21 lobster special advertised on a sign in front. The restaurant was simply decorated but with some nice local artwork. We elected to eat on the patio near the pool.

I ordered conch which was fairly good; nothing special but edible and a generous portion. My wife ordered the lobster special. We waited and waited for the meals to be served and finally the waiter came out and said that the cook had over cooked the first lobster and was cooking another one. The length of the additional should have told us something. When the second lobster arrived, my wife found it also overcooked and inedible. We finished our beer, paid the bill and left. When I told the waiter that the lobster was inedible he seemed to be genuinely surprised.

Recommend? No! Avoid the place.
