The highlight of our two-week vacation at the Harborside Resort on Paradise Island, was a lunch and tour of the historic Graycliff Hotel. Pirates, we were told, built Graycliff and the dungeon now holds over 200,000 bottles of wine. Our lunch was excellent (I especially enjoyed the conch soup) and the tour guide excellent in showing us through the wine collection, cigar factory and gardens. We left with a copy of their book, "Graycliff: 300 Years of Grand Bahamian Luxury," graciously signed by our hostess, waiters and tour guide.

We did not stay at the hotel or ask to see a room.

Built by a Georgian pirate in the early 18th Century this elegant plantation style house opposite Government House is both a small boutique hotel with elegant rooms and suites and the best restaurant in the Bahamas. Cool leafy gardens house two swimming pools. Excellent service and outstanding food backed by a world class wine cellar housed in the old pirate's dungeon makes for a true lily exceptional holiday experience.

Room Tip: Don't be in too much of a rush over breakfast as it can take Bahamian time to come.

If you are looking for a different experience in The Caribbean that doesn't include hordes of fanny packing tourists, scuffed hotel corridors that go on forever, standard boring faux Caribbean decor and mindless beach games then Graycliff could be for you ...
It's not perfect but it feels like you've stopped in with your favourite aunt at her elegant and warm rambling house
The rooms are large and spacious and the bathrooms modern and well appointed -- service is warm and personal and it's a short walk to everything
Graycliff is like stepping back in time to a more gracious and personal way of travelling --an anomaly in this day and age

The Graycliff Hotel is definitely unique, and has a sort of shabby elegance. It's furnished with real antiques, which means some creaking here and there. The rugs are kind of worn, there's an air of elegance for sure, but it's not a bright and shiny new elegance by any means. We stayed in the main building, and our bed was really hard, and so was every other sitting surface in the room. Bathroom was clean, modern and spacious. The grounds of the hotel are REALLY beautiful, there's a winding tropical garden and two beautiful swimming pools; however, the property is situated in a neighborhood that is very unwalkable (no sidewalks, cars zooming around corners, nothing too nearby). Definitely take the Dolphin Island option if you're staying there, that was fun.

Our favorite thing about this hotel was the lounge. There was an older lady playing piano, singing, and taking requests - she was incredible, and so welcoming/friendly, too. We sat for hours listening and enjoying some drinks. The 5-star restaurant next to the lounge was EXTREMELY expensive. Our dinner was $450 for two people, and the food was very good, but not THAT good (that price did include several drinks and a reasonably priced bottle of wine), although service was fantastic.

On a different night, we ate in their wood-fired pizza restaurant, and that was AWESOME. Seriously great, aside from the bartender who stared at us the whole dinner (and we're a forty-something married couple). Hahaha.

We toured the chocolate factory, that was fun. :-) We brought home a box of chocolates, but they certainly didn't last long. I'd recommend the bacon dark chocolate truffle, just amazing.

Also, I'd like to give a shout-out to the hotel receptionist, too bad I forgot her name, but she was very nice and accomodating.

This review is not for the hotel, but the adjacent cigar and chocolate factories. Two thumbs up for both. I toured the cigar factory, which is small but and enjoyable experience. I did a self-guided tour of the cigar rolling floor, as well as their storage facilities, then purchased some cigars. I would say the cigars were a little pricey, considering they were purchased on-site and I am used to pricing from my local JR Cigar store in NC. However, they are on par with most other cigar pricing I have seen in Nassau.

My wife visited the chocolate store, which is adjacent to their chocolate factory (as well as the hotel and cigar factory). She was very pleased with the variety and taste of the chocolates, although she was not impressed with the bacon/chocolate delicacy (no reflection on Graycliff, she just didn't like the combination).

The location, just above old town, is great. The buildings are shabby chic and all rooms have character. The staff are very willing and the service is generally good. Breakfast, as mentioned before can be a bit of a battle to get what you want when you want it.
The pizzeria, on a Friday, has happy hour, which is very popular with the locals. The pizzas were excellent and the beer cheap.
Our room was a good size, as was the bathroom. The shower had an old style curtain but was OK. The bed was awful. It sloped into the middle and after a long flight from England was the least we wanted!
The gardens and main pool were excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for the main house overlooking the garden and pool.

We are staying at the Graycliff Hotel in Nassau for four days. It is an absolutely beautiful, well preserved old mansion. The gardens are extensive and there is a very well stocked wine cellar. Our suite on the second floor, The Baillou, is very spacious with three rooms, two of which open onto the veranda overlooking the harbour and lighthouse.
We did eat at the restaurant, but as I am allergic to onions, there was very little on the extensive menu that I could eat. The fillet steak that I did have was perfectly cooked but it was a bit lonely on the plate by itself.
The hotel is worth the stay as it gives you a taste of Nassau in past when life was gracious.

Room Tip: The Baillou suite is beautiful.
