Owner description: The Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Centre is a peaceful 80 year-old retreat spread over 4 acres of lush tropical gardens. It is a boutique zoo that specializes in bird rescue & rehabilitation, education, preservation of history and conservation of natural resources. Ardastra is home to many native species of plants and animals - including the Bahamas National Bird, the beautiful and exotic Caribbean Flamingo. We are well-known for our animal encounters that allow visitors to get "up close "with some of our residents. We encourage all of our visitors to take a guided tour for a better appreciation of our residents and our property. To maximize enjoyment, we also encourage our guests to schedule their visits around our Signature Showtimes: 10:30am, 1:30pm or 3:30pm. You can participate in the "Flamingo Experience", a unique show of the glory and antics of these incredible creatures together with an excellent narration of their story. Guests can also hand-feed the colourful and playful South Pacific Lory Parrots and have numerous photographic opportunities during your visit. While walking the Gardens, friendly and informed staff will answer questions while two-legged feathered friends will freely entertain. Light refreshments are available at the "Parrot Pit Stop". "Toby's Treasures" is filled with gifts/souvenirs so that you can take a piece of Ardastra home with you.

I have been to the Adastra Gardens 3 or 4 times and each time have enjoyed the experience. As long as you appreciate that Nassau is a relatively small place and you don't expect too much from the "Zoo" part then you won't be disappointed. One of the main attractions is the regular "Flamingo March" when the beautiful, bright pink Bahamian flamingos are rounded up by their "Captain" and enter the parade ring where they march around to his commands. Visitors are invited to enter the parade ring so the birds can take a closer look at you too. There are a number of other exotic birds than roam around freely including some wonderful peacocks. Feeding the Lori parrots at the scheduled times is also something I recommend, everyone can take part and I would encourage small kids to especially try it out as often they can be quite timid of getting close to a bird and the parrots are so friendly that kids will soon learn to feel at ease. There are a number of other animals at the zoo like wild cats, monkeys, and various reptiles. It's not that expensive to visit the Gardens (and Residents get a small discount!) so if you have time during your visit here then definitely make a trip. There is plenty parking on site and a kiosk where you can buy cold drinks, ice creams and snacks.

If you love beautiful tropical plants and beautiful tropical birds, this place is just right for you! My mother loves flamingos, so when we found out about the flamingo parade, we knew we had to check it out.
My younger son was just dying to feed the parrots, so we headed there first. We were cheerfully greeted by the gentleman in charge of the lorys and handed an apple slice each (free! Every other zoo I've seen makes you pay to feed them!). My youngest had a ball feeding them, and the man in charge made his day by luring a bird onto his hat.
The flamingo parade was silly and fun. My mother and I both got to participate, which was awesome. The girl that was emcee-ing was hilarious; she said they had to clip the flamingos' wings because they were getting into trouble in Nassau, selling fake jewelry, braiding people's hair, and doing graffiti.
I think the "gardens" part of the name should definitely be emphasized, because this place is a riot of colors and textures from all the gorgeous plants, some of which were unlike anything I had seen before. Butterflies are everywhere, just adding to the beauty.

Very good selection of foreign and native birds, reptiles and animals. Enjoyable for both adults and children. Feeding the parrots is fun. The West Indian Flamingo show is very good.

What a surprise! We had some time to kill before picking up our dog from the vet and had seen this sign on Bay Street advertising for the zoo and gardens.

Was pleasantly surprised and how many animals they had. Parrots out on the pathways talking to you and doing tricks on their perches. The flamingos walking around we're definitely the highlight.
