Owner description: The Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Centre is a peaceful 80 year-old retreat spread over 4 acres of lush tropical gardens. It is a boutique zoo that specializes in bird rescue & rehabilitation, education, preservation of history and conservation of natural resources. Ardastra is home to many native species of plants and animals - including the Bahamas National Bird, the beautiful and exotic Caribbean Flamingo. We are well-known for our animal encounters that allow visitors to get "up close "with some of our residents. We encourage all of our visitors to take a guided tour for a better appreciation of our residents and our property. To maximize enjoyment, we also encourage our guests to schedule their visits around our Signature Showtimes: 10:30am, 1:30pm or 3:30pm. You can participate in the "Flamingo Experience", a unique show of the glory and antics of these incredible creatures together with an excellent narration of their story. Guests can also hand-feed the colourful and playful South Pacific Lory Parrots and have numerous photographic opportunities during your visit. While walking the Gardens, friendly and informed staff will answer questions while two-legged feathered friends will freely entertain. Light refreshments are available at the "Parrot Pit Stop". "Toby's Treasures" is filled with gifts/souvenirs so that you can take a piece of Ardastra home with you.

Loved the flamingos they have there. The guy who trains them was hilarious. It's a small scale zoo but its still fun to go there and see the parrots too. It's worth the visit.

If you are looking for a quiet, beautiful escape from all of the shopping madness, this is the place to go. My boyfriend and I were in Nassau for a 2nd time and had already seen the shopping and the beaches and wanted to do something different. This zoo is most known for its birds, and it certainly does have a lot of beautiful birds. There are also some other animals, and also a lot of pretty flowers and other plantlife. You can feed the birds, take pictures with them, and watch a flamingo show as well. Some birds walk around freely in the zoo, including the peacocks and some of the flamingos. There is a small gift shop and snack stand too. We spent about an hour and a half strolling around and taking lots of great pictures. Needless to say, I recommend this to anyone who enjoys zoos as much as I do.

Also, make sure you bring the Nassau map when you go. One of the maps at the port contains a coupon for free punch (with or without rum), but another one gets you 2 dollars off admission as well as the rum, so choose that one if you can find it!

My husband and I visited the Ardastra Gardens & Zoo last week on a cruise ship stop in Nassau. We were looking for something low-key to do, away from the cruise ship masses, and this was perfect. (Note that we enjoy zoos, and visit them any chance we get.) We picked up a map of Nassau inside the cruise terminal upon debarking the ship, and in about 30 minutes, we were at the zoo. The walk is lovely, as you follow the beach practically the entire way, and you can stop and eat at the Fish Fry on your way! The zoo itself is very small and rustic, but well kept. Admission price when we were there was $16 US/adult. It is mostly birds (various parrots, peacocks, budgies) with a few reptiles (one boa, several iguanas), some monkeys and a few other various mammals. There were also a few farm animals (goats, sheep, rabbits). At specified times you can feed the lorys (free, but donation appreciated), you can also buy goat feed for $1. There is also a group of flamingos that do a "marching" show a couple of times a day that is entertaining. We spent about two & one-half hours at Ardastra, and had the place to ourselves until a tour group showed up about 90-minutes in to our visit. Based on the crowds we passed at Junkanoo Beach & the Straw Market, we were happy with our decision to spend a peaceful morning at Ardastra Zoo!
