You can reach Ft. Fincastle by climbing up the Queen's Staircase (see my review for directions and information) or by walking up East St from Bay St. (which is the main Nassau st.) I recommend going to Queens Staircase from Elizabeth St., visiting Ft. Fincastle and walking back down East. St. The total round trip is less than a mile but there is uneven terrain, stairs, and street crossings.
As for the Fort it is a relatively small structure build in 1793 by British Lord Dunnmore. The idea was to deter an attack to the harbor in Nassau. Fortunately for Nassau the fort never fired a cannon in defense.
There is a one dollar entrance fee, so what the heck, it is worth a walk through with the definite bonus of a photographic view of the harbor, and your cruise ship if that is your mode of arrival. Lots of tours come here but no need to pay if you can walk a bit and are a little bit adventurous. You do walk through some back streets but no problem in daylight.

This is a very small Fort, but admission is only $1. It was cool to look around and the view from on top of the fort was great! We skipped the tour and just read the signs around the fort. It gave a lot of information. It was a nice way to spend the morning.

this is very scenic- highest viewing point on the island. Great for pictures. Also can see where slaves were kept - creepy! at only $1 admission, it is certainly worth it!

This boat shaped castle is lovely and as some noted they do want you to take their guided tour which is where you'll get the details about the fort. It isn't big but worth a walk around. It costs a $1 a person and if you tip the same you are not out much for the fun experience. Most of the major islands around the Caribbean and Bahamas have castles/forts from this era and it's fun to see them all and note the differences as you travel around the different countries. The photos turn out well and a great look out with the coral block construction and mighty canons. As others have noted if you're taking the Nassau tour you'll see this, the Queen's Staircase and water tower. One of the least expensive cities to take a taxi tour we have found in the recent years of travel.

This is a great attraction. Tour guides will drop you here and you can have a self-guided tour. Be careful about the men there that look official. You are not required to have them guide you through the fort. They are pushy and want to show you around then expect a tip after a 5 minute tour. Take your time and look around yourself. It is not that big of a place that you cannot do it yourself. There is a small fee to get in but it is worth the view and experience of being in the jail cells.
