You can reach Ft. Fincastle by climbing up the Queen's Staircase (see my review for directions and information) or by walking up East St from Bay St. (which is the main Nassau st.) I recommend going to Queens Staircase from Elizabeth St., visiting Ft. Fincastle and walking back down East. St. The total round trip is less than a mile but there is uneven terrain, stairs, and street crossings.
As for the Fort it is a relatively small structure build in 1793 by British Lord Dunnmore. The idea was to deter an attack to the harbor in Nassau. Fortunately for Nassau the fort never fired a cannon in defense.
There is a one dollar entrance fee, so what the heck, it is worth a walk through with the definite bonus of a photographic view of the harbor, and your cruise ship if that is your mode of arrival. Lots of tours come here but no need to pay if you can walk a bit and are a little bit adventurous. You do walk through some back streets but no problem in daylight.
