“Dont waste your time”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

We went all the way downtown, walked in the heat to get to this fort which is not much to see. And, it was closed. We had to walk through a shady neighborhood to get there.

“If you have been to bigger forts, skip this.”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

The best part of this fort was the view after you climb to the top. It's small, not a lot to see. Glad it only cost a dollar!

“nothing exciting, but some nice views”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

My husband and I have been to numerous forts in the Caribbean (the best one by far is on St. Kitts, although St. Croix has a cool one too), but this was our first trip with the kids in tow, so we stopped by both Fort Fincastle and Fort Charlotte during our Bahamas trip.

It's a hike up to the Queen's Staircase and then Fort Fincastle from downtown Nassau, but it's really only worth it if you haven't otherwise gotten up high to see the views of the cruise ships and Atlantis (you can see the former from Fort Charlotte). If you don't care about those views but instead can enjoy a gorgeous water view from one of the beaches, that's a better bet.

It was extremely hot the day we walked from downtown Nassau up a busy road; bring water bottles and wear a hat and sunglasses if you go. It's a good hike. It's only $1 to get in, and they of course take your picture to sell it to you afterward. They assumed we were there on a cruise and would want a pic with the cruise ships in the background, but we weren't and didn't. ;-)

But really, there's virtually nothing to see as far as the fort itself goes. A few small rooms with placards telling you about the fort. Then you can go up on top and enjoy the breeze and the views. No one bothered us from the shopkeeper stalls, and we walked back down the other way.

If you are short on time in Nassau, really don't bother. What you can see in other tourists' pics of the Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle are good enough to see what it's about. Neither are anything special, but it was good exercise at least!

“Satisfied quest for history”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

Yes, it's a small fort area, but it was easy to get to and very cheap at $1 a person. It gives a great view of the island, and it's small enough to keep the kids interested while they are up there.

“Fort Fincastle”
Reviewed August 22, 2013

The fort is located next to the Queen's Staircase and Water Tower, a few blocks from the port. There are food stands, t-shirt stands, a gift shop, and a public restroom; its a popular spot for tourists. The fort is at the highest point of Nassau, making the view spectacular. The entrance fee is $1 per person and the tour guides work for tips - they are very informative and give out advice so bring one dollar bills. The fort's cannons were never used, but it is still interesting to learn about Nassau's history.
