Yes, this was a grand old lady of a hotel when it was built 100 yrs ago. Yes, it is truly a beautiful hotel today after major renovations however, this beautiful hotel sits in the middle of squalor in downtown Nassau. Not an ideal location. This hotel sits in the middle of the piers for cruise ships on the right and pier warehouses on the left.... ie: a hotel in the middle of a shipyard. Pros: Friendly staff, nice room, great bathroom. Cons: Maid gratuity and energy surcharges for a 5 night stay amounted to an extra $75.00. Restaurants within the hotel are very expensive...... take a ten minute walk on E Bay St towards Cable Beach and grab a great meal at Fish Fry restaurants for an inexpensive meal.
Downtown Nassau closes at 6pm except the bars. The drinking age is 18 therefore, you will find plenty of intoxicated kids.... oh, for added good measure the prostitutes come out at sundown.
Would I go back to Nassau-Providence Island again? Denfinately not! For an Island that depends so much on tourism.... the local government should reinvest in the infrastructure of the island. The sidewalks are pitiful, the roads are dangerous and taking a casual stroll at night.... forget it!
I couldn't wait to leave.
