“Awesome Views and Privacy”

Overall this was a great place, beautiful views and privacy was good.

Pros:
Private, gated community
Private beach (absolutely gorgeous and we saw just a couple of people every time we went there)
Large balcony with hot tub
HUGE bed with A/C
Full kitchen and laundry
Two safes to store valuables
Phone, Internet and Dish Network
There was no one in the upstairs "Penthouse Suite" until 1/2 way through our stay so we had the place all to ourselves, which is really what we wanted.

Cons:
Bugs. They have ants. Everywhere.
Termites are munching in a few areas that would cause wood pieces/flakes/dust from their "work" to fall on the bathroom counter and sink - my wife refused to brush her teeth in the bathroom.
Dishwasher was not attached to the cabinetry
Overall appliances could be much nicer for such a nice property.
Privacy, particularly out on the balcony - kind of - there is a "Penthouse Suite" above with a smaller balcony and one can simply walk up to the railing up there and look right down to our balcony.
Someone did arrive in the "Penthouse Suite" halfway through our stay - they were pretty noisy, bumped around a lot and played music and made noise late into the night - I would suggest that if you want to stay here and want some privacy and quiet, take the "Penthouse Suite".
Pricey - $4K for the week - Didn't mind paying that for what we got but I expected a little more for the price.

“Beautiful views, well equipped unit, wonerfully managed , but watch out for the bugs!”

The turreted gate house of the Peter Bay estates is a fun little place to stay. The views from this perch are beautiful. The apartment is nice, the kitchen well equipped, comfortable bed, nice linens. There is a washer and dryer available. The owner has thoughtfully provided a selection of snorkels and fins for use. Unfortunately there is a down side: insects.
This unit nestled into the hillside, surrounded by natural and landscaped foliage. And because of this location comes the downside : bugs. No see-ums,( local gnats), mosquitos, ants. There are screens on some of the bedroom windows, and the bathroom windows, but the rest of the unit is open. There are doors to the balcony, large dark wooded doors which you want to keep open to see the views. Even these doors have slats which can allow insects entry. I tried several local and other prescribed insect repellants and I have never been so bitten and bothered by insects. It is too bad. I am not sure there is a way to improve this given the location.

Management Response

I'm glad you enjoyed the Honeymoon Suite as well as the view. The suite is designed to fully capture the view and the Tradwinds. Every window as well as every door has screening. The screening on the doors is located between the slats (louvers) you referred to. Possibly, you didn't notice them. The screening will not keep the bugs out if you leave the doors open. If on the balcony enjoying the view, it's prudent to close the doors for this very reason. I spent January through March next door at Villa Coco de Mer, which I also own, and observed that the doors were propped open all day long even though you were at the beach. I think a 3 star rating is a bit harsh. Leave the doors open and "they will come in."

“Honeymoon Getaway”
Reviewed February 16, 2015 for a stay in February 2015

We had a wonderful time. The pictures really do not do it justice. Overlooking Cinnamon bay and this literally is one of the top beaches world wide. North Side of St. Johns the beaches are AMAZING, south side more pebbles.

Unit was in great shape, bed comfy, Sammy was always on call and did his best to assist. No shades so sun gets you up early!!! Great for me, but the wife is not a morning person. Only drawback was that the showers are hooked up to a small 10 gal hot water heater. So get used to taking mild showers. Not cold because everything is 75-80 degrees. but he hot shower is good for one person and then it needs about 1/2 hour to recharge.

Great Internet / Wifi / TV / Sonos and very kind of the owner to use the house phone as long we didn't over do it. With six kids we just had them call us or face time.

On St. Johns / St. Thomas:
Beware that when traveling to USVI you have to drive on the LEFT. Took some getting used to. You will need a rental car, we were able to get on in St. Thomas at the Airport and then Car barge it over ($50 round trip).

Food on the island was mediocre at best and extremely expensive. Gal of OJ $10.50, but beef was surprisingly reasonable. I suggest you take full advantage of the grill. Wine and other spirits very expensive. But they literally give the Rum away. Recommend buying food on St. Thomas before coming over.

“Nice Place with beautiful view.”

I love St. John's UVVI and this along with coco de mer next door were the best places I have staid at there. I have been to St. John's usvi about six times. I would recommend spending a liittle more money for rent and stay at Peters Bay. The prevailing wind is from the east and this place along with coco de mer have an east exposure and are high up with good views insuring a beautiful ocean breeze.

“The best one bedroom place on the whole island”

We go to St. John twice a year for years now and have stayed at hotels, B&B and other private homes over the years until we found the Gatehouse. THIS IS THE PLACE TO STAY ON ST. JOHN!!! Don't be fooled by other claims. Trust me here, I have travel extensively throughout the Caribbean and found no place nicer. We have stayed here several times now and never get sick of it. Now under new ownership, the new owners have put a lot of thought into updating these two one bedroom units. The place is clean, comfortable and classic St. John. There is a private beach (Peter Bay Beach) for the residents of the houses in Peter Bay Estates which is just awesome. The views are some of the best on the island and the breezes are constantly blowing in this area of the island. I like the lower unit because of the full kitchen, indoor/outdoor shower and covered porch but the upper unit is just as nice. Like I said, it's just my preference. It's very close to the main road where you can catch one of the many taxis that will drive by all day long in case you wish to save money and not rent a Jeep which will add another $500 to your stay for the week. My wife and prefer to buy some food and make dinner at night in the kitchen or even better the grill on the porch. The view will make you want to stay in verses running into town and dropping $150+ on dinner. The Gatehouse is worth the money, every penny of it, so save those pennies and rent one of these two units. You won't be disappointed.
